Effects Of Intrinsic Defects And Alloying With Fe On The Half-Metallicity Of Co2Mnsi, G. G. Baez Flores, Ivan A. Zhuravlev, Kirill Belashchenko 2020 University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Effects Of Intrinsic Defects And Alloying With Fe On The Half-Metallicity Of Co2Mnsi, G. G. Baez Flores, Ivan A. Zhuravlev, Kirill Belashchenko

Kirill Belashchenko Publications

The electronic structure and half-metallic gap of Co2MnSi in the presence of crystallographic defects, partial Fe substitution for Mn, and thermal spin fluctuations are studied using the coherent potential approximation and the disordered local moment method. In the presence of 5% Co or Mn vacancies the Fermi level shifts down to the minority-spin valence-band maximum. In contrast to NiMnSb, both types of Mn antisite defects in Co2MnSi are strongly exchange coupled to the host magnetization, and thermal spin fluctuations do not strongly affect the half-metallic gap. Partial substitution of Mn by Fe results in considerable changes in the Bloch spectral …

Duality In A Model Of Layered Superfluids And Sliding Phases, Steven Vayl 2020 CUNY Graduate Center

Duality In A Model Of Layered Superfluids And Sliding Phases, Steven Vayl

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The intent of my project is to determine if the proposal of sliding phases in XY layered systems has physical ground. It will be done by comparing numerical and analytical results for a layered XY models. Sliding phases were first proposed in the context of DNA complexes and then extended to XY models, 1D coupled wires and superfluid films. The existence of the sliding phase would mean that there is a phase transition from 3D to 2D behavior. Such systems have been studied both in the clean case and with disorder. The idea of the sliding phases is based on …

The Origins Of Phantom Partials In The Piano, Lauren M. Neldner 2020 Rollins College

The Origins Of Phantom Partials In The Piano, Lauren M. Neldner

Honors Program Theses

Phantom partials are anomalous frequency components identifiable in the sound of the piano and occur at the sum and difference frequencies of two overtones. For several decades they have been identified as crucial components to the sound of the piano and assumed to be generated by the forced longitudinal motion of the string. Recent work has identified that contrary to common belief, most of the power is produced in the non-string components with the most likely source being the wooden structural components. This work presents experimental results for two plausible theories that could explain the origins of phantom partials in …

Optical Potts Machine Through Networks Of Three-Photon Down-Conversion Oscillators, Mostafa Honari-Latifpour, Mohammad-Ali Miri 2020 CUNY Queens College

Optical Potts Machine Through Networks Of Three-Photon Down-Conversion Oscillators, Mostafa Honari-Latifpour, Mohammad-Ali Miri

Publications and Research

In recent years there has been a growing interest in optical simulation of lattice spin models for applications in classical computing. Here, we propose optical implementation of a three-state Potts spin model by using networks of coupled parametric oscillators with phase tristability. We first show that the cubic nonlinear process of spontaneous three-photon down-conversion is accompanied by a tristability in the phase of the subharmonic signal between three states with 2/3 phase contrast. The phase of such a parametric oscillator behaves like a three-state spin system. Next, we show that a network of dissipatively coupled three-photon down-conversion oscillators emulates the …

Interpretations Of Bicoherence In Space & Lab Plasma Dynamics, Gregory Allen Riggs 2020 West Virginia University

Interpretations Of Bicoherence In Space & Lab Plasma Dynamics, Gregory Allen Riggs

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The application of bicoherence analysis to plasma research, particularly in non-linear, coupled-wave regimes, has thus far been significantly belied by poor resolution in time, and/or outright destruction of frequency information. Though the typical power spectrum cloaks the phase-coherency between frequencies, Fourier transforms of higher-order convolutions provide an n-dimensional spectrum which is adept at elucidating n-wave phase coherence. As such, this investigation focuses on the utility of the normalized bispectrum for detection of wave-wave coupling in general, with emphasis on distinct implications within the scope of non-linear plasma physics. Interpretations of bicoherent features are given for time series from …

Effects Of Aperiodicity And Frustration On The Magnetic Properties Of Artificial Quasicrystals, Barry Farmer 2020 University of Kentucky

Effects Of Aperiodicity And Frustration On The Magnetic Properties Of Artificial Quasicrystals, Barry Farmer

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy

Quasicrystals have been shown to exhibit physical properties that are dramatically different from their periodic counterparts. A limited number of magnetic quasicrystals have been fabricated and measured, and they do not exhibit long-range magnetic order, which is in direct conflict with simulations that indicate such a state should be accessible. This dissertation adopts a metamaterials approach in which artificial quasicrystals are fabricated and studied with the specific goal of identifying how aperiodicity affects magnetic long-range order. Electron beam lithography techniques were used to pattern magnetic thin films into two types of aperiodic tilings, the Penrose P2, and Ammann-Beenker tilings. SQUID …

Characterization Of Reduced Graphene Oxide Anode For Application In Algae Biophotovoltaic Platforms, Siti Aisyah Ibrahim 2020 Universiti Malaya

Characterization Of Reduced Graphene Oxide Anode For Application In Algae Biophotovoltaic Platforms, Siti Aisyah Ibrahim

Student Works (2020-2029)

Research interest in recent times has placed much focus on electrode technology for biophotovoltaics (BPV) especially in algal fuel cells (AFCs) application. The purpose of this investigation is therefore directed towards optimizing reduced graphene oxide (rGO) thin film as an electrode for AFCs application by means of annealing and plasma treatment. First stage involves deposition of six (6) layers of rGO thin film using Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method. The anode electrodes were then annealed at different temperatures under vacuum condition. For plasma treatment meanwhile, a variation of voltage was used to vary the plasma conditions resulting in different surface morphology. To …

Dimension Reduction Techniques For High Dimensional And Ultra-High Dimensional Data, Subha Datta 2019 New Jersey Institute of Technology

Dimension Reduction Techniques For High Dimensional And Ultra-High Dimensional Data, Subha Datta

Dissertations

This dissertation introduces two statistical techniques to tackle high-dimensional data, which is very commonplace nowadays. It consists of two topics which are inter-related by a common link, dimension reduction.

The first topic is a recently introduced classification technique, the weighted principal support vector machine (WPSVM), which is incorporated into a spatial point process framework. The WPSVM possesses an additional parameter, a weight parameter, besides the regularization parameter. Most statistical techniques, including WPSVM, have an inherent assumption of independence, which means the data points are not connected with each other in any manner. But spatial data violates this assumption. Correlation between …

Coulombic And Non-Coulombic Effects Of Single And Overlapping Electric Double Layers With Surface Charge Regulation, Raviteja Vangara 2019 University of New Mexico

Coulombic And Non-Coulombic Effects Of Single And Overlapping Electric Double Layers With Surface Charge Regulation, Raviteja Vangara

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

The physical origin of charged interfaces involving electrolyte solutions is in the thermodynamic equilibrium between the surface reactive groups and certain dissolved ionic species in the bulk. This equilibrium is very strongly dependent on the precise local density of these species, also known as potential determining ions in the solution. The latter, however, is determined by the overall solution structure, which is dominated by the large number of solvent molecules relative to all solutes. Hence, the solvent contribution to the molecular structure is a crucial factor that determines the properties of electric double layers. Models that explicitly account for the …

An Application Of The Ising Model, Juliano A. Everett

Publications and Research

Understanding how the Ising model works, what it represents, and how it can be applied to neurology. Given that an Ising model is an Entropy model that could be representative of the firing of neurons, some assumptions of the system are made and then the process is simulated through Monte Carlo methods.

From Critical Behavior To Catastrophic Runaways: Comparing Sheared Granular Materials With Bulk Metallic Glasses, Alan A. Long, Dmitry Denisov, Peter Schall, Todd C. Hufnagel, Xiaojun Gu, Wendelin J. Wright, Karin A. Dahmen 2019 University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

From Critical Behavior To Catastrophic Runaways: Comparing Sheared Granular Materials With Bulk Metallic Glasses, Alan A. Long, Dmitry Denisov, Peter Schall, Todd C. Hufnagel, Xiaojun Gu, Wendelin J. Wright, Karin A. Dahmen

Faculty Journal Articles

The flow of granular materials and metallic glasses is governed by strongly correlated, avalanche-like deformation. Recent comparisons focused on the scaling regimes of the small avalanches, where strong similarities were found in the two systems. Here, we investigate the regime of large avalanches by computing the temporal profile or “shape” of each one, i.e., the time derivative of the stress-time series during each avalanche. We then compare the experimental statistics and dynamics of these shapes in granular media and bulk metallic glasses. We complement the experiments with a mean-field model that predicts a critical size beyond which avalanches turn into …

Multiplicativity Of Connes' Calculus, Partha Sarathi Chakraborty, Satyajit Guin 2019 Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata

Multiplicativity Of Connes' Calculus, Partha Sarathi Chakraborty, Satyajit Guin

Journal Articles

In his book on noncommutative geometry, Connes constructed a differential graded algebra out of a spectral triple. Lack of monoidality of this construction is investigated. We identify a suitable monoidal subcategory of the category of spectral triples and show that when restricted to this subcategory the construction of Connes is monoidal. Richness of this subcategory is exhibited by establishing a faithful endofunctor to this subcategory.

Force Oscillations Distort Avalanche Shapes, Louis W. McFaul, Wendelin J. Wright, Jordan Sickle, Karin A. Dahmen 2019 University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Force Oscillations Distort Avalanche Shapes, Louis W. Mcfaul, Wendelin J. Wright, Jordan Sickle, Karin A. Dahmen

Faculty Journal Articles

Contradictory scaling behavior in experiments testing the principle of universality may be due to external oscillations. Thus, the effect of damped oscillatory external forces on slip avalanches in slowly deformed solids is simulated using a mean-field model. Akin to a resonance effect, oscillatory driving forces change the dynamics of avalanches with durations close to the oscillation period. This problem can be avoided by tuning mechanical resonance frequencies away from the range of the inverse avalanche durations. The results provide critical guidance for experimental tests for universality and a quantitative understanding of avalanche dynamics under a wide range of driving conditions.

Stability And Application Of The K-Core Dynamical Model To Biological Networks, Francesca Beatrice Arese Lucini

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The objective of the dissertation is to illustrate the importance of the k-core dynamical model, by first presenting the stability analysis of the nonlinear k-core model and compare its solution to the most widely used linear model. Second, I show a real world application of the k-core model to describe properties of neural networks, specifically, the transition from conscious to subliminal perception.

Inference Of Language Functional Network In Healthy, Cancerous And Bilingual Brains By Fmri And Network Modeling, Qiongge Li 2019 CUNY Graduate Center

Inference Of Language Functional Network In Healthy, Cancerous And Bilingual Brains By Fmri And Network Modeling, Qiongge Li

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

We study the underlying mechanism by which language processing occurs in the human brain using inference methods on functional magnetic resonance imaging data. The data analyzed stems from several cohorts of subjects; a monolingual group, a bilingual group, a healthy control group and one diseased case. We applied a complex statistical inference pipeline to determine the network structure of brain components involved with language. This healthy network reveals a fully connected triangular relationship between the pre-Supplementary Motor Area (pre-SMA), the Broca's Area (BA), and the ventral Pre-Motor Area (PreMA) in the left hemisphere. This "triangle'' shows consistently in all the …

Morphological Study Of Voids In Ultra-Large Models Of Amorphous Silicon, Durga Prasad Paudel 2019 University of Southern Mississippi

Morphological Study Of Voids In Ultra-Large Models Of Amorphous Silicon, Durga Prasad Paudel

Dissertations

The microstructure of voids in pure and hydrogen-rich amorphous silicon (a:Si) network was studied in ultra-large models of amorphous silicon, using classical and quantum- mechanical simulations, on the nanometer length scale. The nanostructure, particularly voids of device grade ultra-large models of a:Si was studied, in which observed three-dimensional realistic voids were extended using geometrical approach within the experimental limit of void-volume fractions. In device-grade simulated models, the effect of void morphology; size, shape, number density, and distribution on simulated scattering intensities in small- angle region were investigated. The evolution of voids on annealing below the crystallization temperature …

Tracing Cyclic Homology Pairings Under Twisting Of Graded Algebras, Sayan Chakraborty, Makoto Yamashita 2019 Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster

Tracing Cyclic Homology Pairings Under Twisting Of Graded Algebras, Sayan Chakraborty, Makoto Yamashita

Journal Articles

We give a description of cyclic cohomology and its pairing with K-groups for 2-cocycle deformation of algebras graded over discrete groups. The proof relies on a realization of monodromy for the Gauss–Manin connection on periodic cyclic cohomology in terms of the cup product action of group cohomology.

Application Of The Optimal Estimation Method (Oem) To Retrieve Relative Humidity From Raman Lidar Backscatter Measurements., Shayamila N. Mahagammulla Gamage, Robert Sica, Alexander Haefele 2019 Department of Physics and Astronomy, The University of Western Ontario, London, Canada

Application Of The Optimal Estimation Method (Oem) To Retrieve Relative Humidity From Raman Lidar Backscatter Measurements., Shayamila N. Mahagammulla Gamage, Robert Sica, Alexander Haefele

Western Research Forum

Accurate measurements of relative humidity (RH) vertical profiles in the atmosphere is important for understanding the earth's weather and the climate system. RH represent the current state of the water vapor in the atmosphere with respect to the ambient air related to saturation. Even minor changes of the RH in the lower atmosphere has a large impact of the global circulation and cloud formation. Due to its high variability RH measurements in the lower atmosphere is significantly challenging. Raman lidar is one of the potential tools that can provide vertical profiles of RH. Typically, temperature and water vapor mixing ratios …

Microscopic View On Structure And Dynamics In Polymer Nanocomposites, Stefan Otto Huber 2019 Louisiana State University

Microscopic View On Structure And Dynamics In Polymer Nanocomposites, Stefan Otto Huber

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The focus of this thesis is on the single chain conformation and dynamics in polymer melts, nanocomposite melts and networks. The exploration of structure, morphology and dynamics has shown to be crucial to understand the basic science in such systems, like the influence of entropy, confinement, and monomeric friction. These parameters can be translated into the macroscopic behavior of the materials. The scientific work on model nanocomposite systems contributes to accelerate the development of materials, and also to invent to date unknown materials with uprecedented properties, needed for car tires, low weight but ultra strong materials or batteries. This thesis …
