Endorectal Digital Prostate Tomosynthesis, Joseph Robert Steiner 2018 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Endorectal Digital Prostate Tomosynthesis, Joseph Robert Steiner

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Several areas of prostate cancer (PCa) management, such as imaging permanent brachytherapy implants or small, aggressive lesions, benefit from high image resolution. Current PCa imaging methods can have inadequate resolution for imaging these areas. Endorectal digital prostate tomosynthesis (endoDPT), an imaging method that combines an external x-ray source and an endorectal x-ray sensor, can produce three-dimensional images of the prostate region that have high image resolution compared to typical methods. This high resolution may improve PCa management and increase positive outcomes in affected men.

This dissertation presents the initial development of endoDPT, including system design, image quality assessment, and examples …

Vibrational Relaxation Theory For Systems Embedded In Microscopically Specified Reservoirs, Anastasia Aemilia Ierides 2018 University of New Mexico

Vibrational Relaxation Theory For Systems Embedded In Microscopically Specified Reservoirs, Anastasia Aemilia Ierides

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This dissertation is a study of the theoretical framework of the practical as well as fundamental problem of the process of relaxation to equilibrium of quantum mechanical systems. The fundamental aspect is concerned with the simultaneous occurrence of decoherence and population equilibration. The practical aspect deals with experimental observations of vibrational relaxation of molecules embedded in liquids or solids. The systems include, but are not limited to, the nondegenerate dimer and harmonic oscillator, in one case weak and in the other strong, interaction with a thermal bath. The time dependence of the energy and the temperature dependence of the relaxation …

Hartmann Characterization Of The Peem-3 Aberration-Corrected X-Ray Photoemission Electron Microscope, A. Scholl, M. A. Marcus, A. Doran, J. R. Nasiatka, A. T. Young, A. A. Macdowell, R. Streubel, N. Kent, J. Feng, W. Wan, H. A. Padmore

Robert Streubel Papers

Aberration correction by an electron mirror dramatically improves the spatial resolution and transmission of photoemission electron microscopes. We will review the performance of the recently installed aberration corrector of the X-ray Photoemission Electron Microscope PEEM-3 and show a large improvement in the efficiency of the electron optics. Hartmann testing is introduced as a quantitative method to measure the geometrical aberrations of a cathode lens electron microscope. We find that aberration correction leads to an order of magnitude reduction of the spherical aberrations, suggesting that a spatial resolution of below 100 nm is possible at 100% transmission of the optics when …

Development Of 3d-Printed Patient Specific Bolus For Clinical Use In To Tal Scalp Irradiation, Garrett Baltz 2018 The University of Texas M D Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences

Development Of 3d-Printed Patient Specific Bolus For Clinical Use In To Tal Scalp Irradiation, Garrett Baltz

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Total scalp irradiation (TSI) is a specialized radiation therapy technique that aims to deliver a uniform dose to the entire scalp. Original electron-based TSI techniques had limited homogeneity due to hot and cold spots created at field junctions due to the multiple matched fields that were required to treat the entire scalp. The transition to photon volumetric-modulated arc therapy based TSI techniques has improved homogeneity, to the point where non-conformal bolus is now a limiting factor. Bolus is required to build-up full dose to the scalp surface in total scalp irradiation. Creating bolus that is conformal to the scalp is …

Atmospheric Radiation And Tgfs: Unexplained Radiation In Our Skies, Adrian Gallegos 2018 Harding University

Atmospheric Radiation And Tgfs: Unexplained Radiation In Our Skies, Adrian Gallegos

Honors College Research

There is a significant correlation between atmospheric electrification via thunderstorms and the occurrence of large emissions of x-ray and gamma ray radiation known as Terrestrial Gamma Ray Flashes (TGFs). Some physical phenomenon may be explained by either the RREA or Thermal Runaway models, but the scientific community as a whole is still largely at work on the theoretical frameworks.

Weak Values From Strong Interactions In Neutron Interferometry, Tobias Denkmayr, Justin Dressel, Hermann Geppert-Kleinrath, Yuji Hasegawa, Stephan Sponar 2018 Atominstitut - TU Wien

Weak Values From Strong Interactions In Neutron Interferometry, Tobias Denkmayr, Justin Dressel, Hermann Geppert-Kleinrath, Yuji Hasegawa, Stephan Sponar

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In their original framework weak values must be measured by weak measurements that are minimally disturbing, meaning that the coupling between an investigated quantum system and a measurement device has no influence on the evolution of the system. However, under certain circumstances this weakness of the interaction is not necessary. In that case weak values can still be exactly determined from the statistics of the outcomes of arbitrary-strength generalized measurements. Here, we report an experimental procedure for neutron matter-waves that extends the notion of generalized eigenvalues for the neutron’s path system to allow the exact determination of weak values using …

Quasiprobability Behind The Out-Of-Time-Ordered Correlator, Nicole Yunger Halpern, Brian Swingle, Justin Dressel 2018 California Institute of Technology

Quasiprobability Behind The Out-Of-Time-Ordered Correlator, Nicole Yunger Halpern, Brian Swingle, Justin Dressel

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Two topics, evolving rapidly in separate fields, were combined recently: the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) signals quantum-information scrambling in many-body systems. The Kirkwood-Dirac (KD) quasiprobability represents operators in quantum optics. The OTOC was shown to equal a moment of a summed quasiprobability [Yunger Halpern, Phys. Rev. A 95, 012120 (2017)]. That quasiprobability, we argue, is an extension of the KD distribution. We explore the quasiprobability's structure from experimental, numerical, and theoretical perspectives. First, we simplify and analyze Yunger Halpern's weak-measurement and interference protocols for measuring the OTOC and its quasiprobability. We decrease, exponentially in system size, the number of trials …

Impacts Of Sub-Auroral Polarization Streams On High Frequency Operations As A Function Of Modeled Particle Energy Flux, Nathan D. Smith 2018 Air Force Institute of Technology

Impacts Of Sub-Auroral Polarization Streams On High Frequency Operations As A Function Of Modeled Particle Energy Flux, Nathan D. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Space weather events can cause irregularities within the ionosphere; in particular, this research examines sub-auroral polarization streams (SAPS), as their accompanying irregularities and effects can degrade high-frequency (HF) signal propagation. It is known that the strongest westerly current drifts delineating SAPS are associated with a deep ionospheric trough, which in turn contaminates HF data with clutter from the non-standard ionosphere. Having a methodology to track and identify these occurrences on current computational architecture would provide operators enhanced situational awareness in knowing to expect degradation in HF processes. This study has discovered a weak, yet significant, exponentially decaying correlation between maximum …

Improving Fallout Characterization By Using Multivariate Techniques To Determine Composition, Christopher R. Pitkins 2018 Air Force Institute of Technology

Improving Fallout Characterization By Using Multivariate Techniques To Determine Composition, Christopher R. Pitkins

Theses and Dissertations

Multivariate statistical techniques have been applied in order to un-mix nuclear fallout debris chemical data. This information is critical to characterization of fallout particle formation following a nuclear detonation. Understanding the correlation between environmental precursors and actinide concentrations in post-detonation nuclear fallout material aids in understanding the physical and chemical processes that alter nuclear device signatures in the fireball. This research examines 123 nuclear fallout samples from a historical nuclear test. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) are used to collect chemical compositions of the fallout samples. Principal component analysis (PCA) is applied in order to examine …

Rental Property Energy Efficiency In San Luis Obispo, Zachary Earl Shockley 2018 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Rental Property Energy Efficiency In San Luis Obispo, Zachary Earl Shockley

Physics

In the modern era, many people choose to rent homes instead of purchasing a home. College towns have an even more disproportionate number of renters when compared to other cities. The majority of rental properties are much less energy efficient than their owner-occupied counterparts. This project analyzes the energy efficiency issues of rental properties in San Luis Obispo and examines potential ways to remedy these issues. In order to analyze these issues, the guiding principles of building science are first discussed, followed by case studies of rental properties in San Luis Obispo. These case studies examine multiple rental properties and …

Benefit Of Intensity Modulated Bolus Electron Conformal Therapy For Post Mastectomy Chest Wall Irradiation, John Doiron 2018 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Benefit Of Intensity Modulated Bolus Electron Conformal Therapy For Post Mastectomy Chest Wall Irradiation, John Doiron

LSU Master's Theses

Purpose: The delivery of post-mastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) with bolus electron conformal therapy (BECT) for patients with left-sided breast cancer can reduce second cancer complication probability (SCCP) compared to modern rotational intensity modulated x-ray (IMXT) techniques such as volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) or Tomotherapy. However, rotational IMXT yields superior levels of dose homogeneity compared to BECT. This study investigates the use of intensity modulated (IM) BECT (IM-BECT) to improve dose homogeneity in the chest wall (CW) region of the PMRT planning target volume (PTV) abutted to parallel opposed IMXT tangents for the remaining PTV for a clinically-representative set of patients, …

In recent years, apparently the Big Bang as described by the Lambda CDM-Standard Model Cosmology has become widely accepted by majority of physics and cosmology communities. Even some people have concluded that it has no serious alternative in horizon. Is that true? First, as we argued elsewhere, Big Bang story relies on singularity. In other words, when we are able to describe the observed data without invoking singularity, then Big Bang model is no longer required. Therefore, here we explore a few alternative stories other than Big Bang story, which most cosmologists believe it is the nearest to Biblical account …

Structure And Magnetism Of Mn5ge3 Nanoparticles, Onur Tosun, Mohammed Salehi-Fashami, Balamurugan Balasubramanian, Ralph Skomski, David J. Sellmyer, George C. Hadjipanayis 2018 University of Delaware

Structure And Magnetism Of Mn5ge3 Nanoparticles, Onur Tosun, Mohammed Salehi-Fashami, Balamurugan Balasubramanian, Ralph Skomski, David J. Sellmyer, George C. Hadjipanayis

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

In this work, we investigated the magnetic and structural properties of isolated Mn5Ge3 nanoparticles prepared by the cluster-beam deposition technique. Particles with sizes between 7.2 and 12.6 nm were produced by varying the argon pressure and power in the cluster gun. X-ray diffraction (XRD)and selected area diffraction (SAD) measurements show that the nanoparticles crystallize in the hexagonal Mn5Si3-type crystal structure, which is also the structure of bulk Mn5Ge3. The temperature dependence of the magnetization shows that the as-made particles are ferromagnetic at room temperature and have slightly different Curie …

Structural, Magnetic, And Electron-Transport Properties Of Epitaxial Mn2Ptsn Films, Y. Jin, Shah R. Valloppilly, Parashu Kharel, Jace Waybright, Pavel V. Lukashev, Xingzhong Li, David J. Sellmyer 2018 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Structural, Magnetic, And Electron-Transport Properties Of Epitaxial Mn2Ptsn Films, Y. Jin, Shah R. Valloppilly, Parashu Kharel, Jace Waybright, Pavel V. Lukashev, Xingzhong Li, David J. Sellmyer

Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience: Faculty Publications

The growth of new magnetic materials on suitable insulating substrates is an important part of the development of spin-electronics devices for memory or information processing. Epitaxial thin films of Mn2PtSn were grown on a MgO [001] substrate by magnetron co-sputtering of the constituents. Structural, magnetic, and electron-transport properties were investigated. The epitaxial Mn2PtSn film has an inverse tetragonal structure with the c-axis aligned in the plane of the MgO substrate. The lattice constants determined using XRD and TEM analysis are c=6.124Å and a=b=4.505Å. The orientation of Mn2PtSn c-axis which …

Applications Of Effective Field Theories To New Physics, Derek Edward Hazard 2018 Wayne State University

Applications Of Effective Field Theories To New Physics, Derek Edward Hazard

Wayne State University Dissertations

We apply an effective field theory approach and argue that lepton flavor violating (LFV) decays M → l1l2 of meson states M with different quantum numbers could be used to put constraints on the Wilson coefficients of effective operators describing LFV interactions at low energy scales. We note that the restricted kinematics of the two-body decay of quarkonium or a heavy quark meson allows us to select operators with particular quantum numbers, significantly reducing the reliance on the single operator dominance assumption that is prevalent in constraining parameters of the effective LFV Lagrangian. We shall also argue that studies of …

Towards A Strong Spin–Orbit Coupling Magnetoelectric Transistor, Peter Dowben, Christian Binek, Kai Zhang, Lu Wang, Wai-Ning Mei, Jonathan P. Bird, Uttam Singisetti, Xia Hong, Kang L. Wang, Dmitri Nikonov 2018 University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Towards A Strong Spin–Orbit Coupling Magnetoelectric Transistor, Peter Dowben, Christian Binek, Kai Zhang, Lu Wang, Wai-Ning Mei, Jonathan P. Bird, Uttam Singisetti, Xia Hong, Kang L. Wang, Dmitri Nikonov

Peter Dowben Publications

Here, we outline magnetoelectric (ME) device concepts based on the voltage control of the interface magnetism of an ME antiferromagnet gate dielectric formed on a very thin semiconductor channel with large spin–orbit coupling (SOC). The emphasis of the ME spin field-effect transistors (ME spin FET) is on an antiferromagnet spin–orbit read logic device and a ME spin-FET multiplexer. Both spin-FET schemes exploit the strong SOC in the semiconducting channel materials but remain dependent on the voltage-induced switching of an ME, so that the switching time is limited only by the switching dynamics of the ME. The induced exchange field spin …

Can A Comprehensive Transition Plan To Barefoot Running Be The Solution To The Injury Epidemic In American Endurance Runners?, Michael A. Scarlett 2018 Claremont McKenna College

Can A Comprehensive Transition Plan To Barefoot Running Be The Solution To The Injury Epidemic In American Endurance Runners?, Michael A. Scarlett

CMC Senior Theses

Fossils belonging to the genus Homo, dating as far back as two million years ago, exhibit uniquely efficient features suggesting that early humans had evolved to become exceptional endurance runners. Although they did not have the cushion or stability-control features provided in our modern day running shoes, our early human ancestors experienced far less of the running-related injuries we experience today. The injury rate has been estimated as high as 90% annually for Americans training for a marathon and as high as 79% annually for all American endurance runners. There is an injury epidemic in conventionally shod populations that …

Climate Modeling, Outgoing Longwave Radiation, And Tropical Cyclone Forecasting, Thomas Rechtman 2018 University of Central Florida

Climate Modeling, Outgoing Longwave Radiation, And Tropical Cyclone Forecasting, Thomas Rechtman

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Climate modeling and tropical cyclone forecasting are two significant is- sues that are continuously being improved upon for more accurate weather forecasting and preparedness. In this thesis, we have studied three climate models and formulated a new model with a view to determine the outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) budget at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) as ob- served by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) satellite based Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). In 2006, Karnauskas proposed the African meridional OLR as an Atlantic hur- ricane predictor, the relation was further proven in 2016 by Karnauskas and Li …

Kinetic Monte Carlo Simulation Of Binary Alloys, Timothy Craig Marshall 2018 Virginia Commonwealth University

Kinetic Monte Carlo Simulation Of Binary Alloys, Timothy Craig Marshall

Theses and Dissertations

There are many tools to simulate physical phenomena. Generally, the simulation technique is defined by the size of the simulation area. Two well know techniques for simulating atom dynamics are kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) and molecular dynamics (MD). In this work we simulate physical vapor deposition of binary metallic systems using the kMC technique. A sufficient quantity of atoms are deposited so that morphological features can be observed. Where kMC has fallen short we have used MD to supplement our results.
