Sequential Discrimination Between Non-Orthogonal Quantum States, Dov L. Fields
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The problem of discriminating between non-orthogonal states is one that has generated a lot of interest. This basic formalism is useful in many areas of quantum information. It serves as a fundamental basis for many quantum key distribution schemes, it functions as an integral part of other quantum algorithms, and it is useful in experimental settings where orthogonal states are not always possible to generate. Additionally, the discrimination problem reveals important fundamental properties, and is intrinsically related to entanglement. In this thesis, the focus is on exploring the problem of sequentially discriminating between non-orthogonal states. In the simplest version these …

Morphological Study Of Voids In Ultra-Large Models Of Amorphous Silicon, Durga Prasad Paudel
Dissertations
The microstructure of voids in pure and hydrogen-rich amorphous silicon (a:Si) network was studied in ultra-large models of amorphous silicon, using classical and quantum- mechanical simulations, on the nanometer length scale. The nanostructure, particularly voids of device grade ultra-large models of a:Si was studied, in which observed three-dimensional realistic voids were extended using geometrical approach within the experimental limit of void-volume fractions. In device-grade simulated models, the effect of void morphology; size, shape, number density, and distribution on simulated scattering intensities in small- angle region were investigated. The evolution of voids on annealing below the crystallization temperature …

Extended-Range Oscillations And The First Sharp Diffraction Peak In Amorphous Silicon: A Systematic Study, Devilal Dahal
Master's Theses
The first sharp diffraction peak (FSDP), which characterizes the static structure factor of many glassy systems near the wave vector region of 1-2 Å-1 has been observed depending on the temperature, pressure and the degree of annealing of the system. The presence of the FSDP is indicative of the intermediate range order (IRO). In current work, we study the role of the extended- range oscillations on the parameters of the FSDP, i.e., intensity, position, area, and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) by using high-quality simulated models of amorphous silicon. The radial distance up to half of the …

Commissioning Of Micro-Cube Thermoluminescent Dosimeters For Small Field Dosimetry Quality Assurance In Radiotherapy, Brandon Luckett
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Small field dosimetry presents complications and uncertainties that could be circumvented by using detectors which are smaller than the radiation field. This study evaluates the reproducibility and accuracy of TLD micro-cubes for use in stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) remote auditing quality assurance (QA) for treatment centers participating in clinical trials. This study tested the hypothesis that TLD micro-cubes could be commissioned to evaluate small field dosimetry, and provide reproducibility within 3%, as well as assure agreement between measured dose and calculated doses to within 5%.
The aims of this thesis were to characterize and commission TLD micro-cubes as well as to …

Quantifying Uncertainty In A Measurement-Based Assessment Of Relative Biological Effectiveness In Carbon Ion Radiotherapy, Shannon Hartzell
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
One of the largest inconsistencies in dose delivered during carbon ion therapy is due to uncertainties in relative biological effectiveness (RBE), a value that is calculated via one of several clinically implemented algorithms. This study investigates the uncertainty in measured microdosimetric parameters for RBE calculation by the Microdosimetric Kinetic Model (MKM), Repair Misrepair Fixation model (RMF), and Local Effect Model I (LEM) using a Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter (TEPC).
Microdosimetric spectra, kinetic energy spectra, and dose fragment contributions were calculated using Monte Carlo (GEANT IV) for monoenergetic and SOBP carbon beams of clinical energy. From microdosimetric spectra, lineal energy values …

Benchmarks Of Nonclassicality For Qubit Arrays, Mordecai Waegell, Justin Dressel
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
We present a set of practical benchmarks for N-qubit arrays that economically test the fidelity of achieving multi-qubit nonclassicality. The benchmarks are measurable correlators similar to two-qubit Bell correlators, and are derived from a particular set of geometric structures from the N-qubit Pauli group. These structures prove the Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger (GHZ) theorem, while the derived correlators witness genuine N-partite entanglement and establish a tight lower bound on the fidelity of particular stabilizer state preparations. The correlators need only M ≤ N + 1 distinct measurement settings, as opposed to the 22N − 1 settings that would normally be …

Applied Symmetry For Crystal Structure Prediction, Scott William Fredericks
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This thesis presents an original open-source Python package called PyXtal (pronounced "pi-crystal") that generates random symmetric crystal structures for use in crystal structure prediction (CSP). The primary advantage of PyXtal over existing structure generation tools is its unique symmetrization method. For molecular structures, PyXtal uses an original algorithm to determine the compatibility of molecular point group symmetry with Wyckoff site symmetry. This allows the molecules in generated structures to occupy special Wyckoff positions without breaking the structure's symmetry. This is a new feature which increases the space of search-able structures and in turn improves CSP performance.
It is shown that …

Solid ferromagnetic materials are rigid in shape and cannot be reconfigured. Ferrofluids, although reconfigurable, are paramagnetic at room temperature and lose their magnetization when the applied magnetic field is removed. Here, we show a reversible paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transformation of ferrofluid droplets by the jamming of a monolayer of magnetic nanoparticles assembled at the water-oil interface. These ferromagnetic liquid droplets exhibit a finite coercivity and remanent magnetization. They can be easily reconfigured into different shapes while preserving themagnetic properties of solid ferromagnets with classic north-south dipole interactions. Their translational and rotational motions can be actuated remotely and precisely by an external magnetic …

Radioactive isotopes of iodine are produced by nuclear power plants as a byproduct of nuclear fission reactions. If these isotopes are released into the environment, such as during a breach of containment, they constitute a health risk to exposed individuals. To mitigate the risk of thyroid cancer due to exposure to radioactive iodine, “iodide prophylaxis,” also known as “thyroid blockade,” can be used, usually by administration of potassium iodide (KI). In some areas of the world, KI has been provided to the general public by their governments as a precautionary measure against potential nuclear power plant incidents. However, in the …

An Investigation Of The Anomalous Thrust Capabilities Of The Electromagnetic Drive, Hannah J. Simons
Physics
The Electromagnetic Drive (EMDrive) is a propellant-less engine concept hypothesized by aero- space engineer Roger Shawyer. Shawyer’s proposed thruster technology is grounded on the theory of electromagnetic resonant behavior exhibited by a radiofrequency cavity, though the source of any generated thrust is undetermined by current physical laws. NASA Eagleworks Laboratories at John- son Space Center conducted a vacuum test campaign to investigate previously reported anomalous thrust capabilities of such a closed radiofrequency cavity, using a low-thrust torsion pendulum. The team published positive, although small-scaled thrust results in 2017. Following NASA Eagleworks breakthrough result and operating under the assumption that the …

Generalized Bagley-Torvik Equation And Fractional Oscillators, Mark Naber, Lucas Lymburner
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper the Bagley-Torvik Equation is considered with the order of the damping term allowed to range between one and two. The solution is found to be representable as a convolution of trigonometric and exponential functions with the driving force. The properties of the effective decay rate and the oscillation frequency with respect to the order of the fractional damping are also studied. It is found that the effective decay rate and oscillation frequency have a complex dependency on the order of the derivative of the damping term and exhibit properties one might expect of a thermodynamic Equation of …

A Study Of Transversely Isotropic Thermoelastic Beam With Green-Naghdi Type-Ii And Type-Iii Theories Of Thermoelasticity, Parveen Lata, Iqbal Kaur
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The present research deals with the study of transversely isotropic thermoelastic beam in the context of Green-Naghdi (GN) theory of thermoelasticity of Type-II and Type-III. The mathematical model is prepared for the thin beam in a closed form with the application of Euler Bernoulli beam theory. The Laplace Transform technique has been used to find the expressions for displacement component, lateral thermal moment, deflection and axial stress in transformed domain. The general algorithm of the inverse Laplace Transform is developed to compute the results numerically in physical domain. The effect of two theories of thermoelasticity Green-Naghdi-II and Green-Naghdi-III has been …

Transient Thermal Stresses Due To Axisymmetric Heat Supply In A Semi-Infinite Thick Circular Plate, S. D. Warbhe, K. C. Deshmukh
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The present paper deals with the determination of thermal stresses in a semi-infinite thick circular plate of a finite length and infinite extent subjected to an axisymmetric heat supply. A thick circular plate is considered having constant initial temperature and arbitrary heat flux is applied on the upper and lower face. The governing heat conduction equation has been solved by using integral transform technique. The results are obtained in terms of Bessel’s function. The thermoelastic behavior has been computed numerically and illustrated graphically for a steel plate.

Analysis Of An Eco-Epidemiological Model Under Optimal Control Measures For Infected Prey, Alfred Hugo, Emanuel Simanjilo
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This paper examines the analysis of an eco-epidemiological model with optimal control strategies for infected prey. A model is proposed and analyzed qualitatively using the stability theory of the differential equations. A local and global study of the model is performed around the disease-free equilibrium and the endemic equilibrium to analyze the global stability using the Lyapunov function. The time-dependent control is introduced into the system to determine the best strategy for controlling the disease. The results obtained suggested the separation of the infected population plays a vital role in disease elimination.

Exact Solutions For Bianchi Type-I Cosmological Models In F(R) Theory Of Gravity, A. H. Hasmani, Ahmed M. Al-Haysah
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we attempt to study spatially homogeneous Bianchi type-I cosmological models in f(R) theory of gravity. The exact solutions of the Einstein’s field equations (EFEs) have been obtained by assuming that the expansion θ is proportional to the shear δ and by using a special form of Hubble parameter (HP). Here we find two exact solutions by using the variation law of H based on two different values of n. The physical and geometrical properties of these models have been discussed and the function f(R) of the Ricci scalar R is obtained for each case.

Healthy kidney cleans blood and removes unwanted materials in the form of urine. When the kidney does not work properly, dialysis is one of the best solutions. Dialysis required if unhealthy kidney does not remove enough wastes and fluid from the blood. This usually happens when only 10 - 15 % of kidney’s function left. A dialyzer is used to clean blood. In an attempt to address clinical and experimental discrepancies, compartmental theoretical models have been used. Noda et al. (1979) were among the first to introduce a theoretical model on mass transfer using countercurrent flows. Their proposed model assumes …

Resonance In The Motion Of A Geocentric Satellite Due To Poynting-Robertson Drag And Equatorial Ellipticity Of The Earth, Charanpreet Kaur, Binay K. Sharma, Sushil Yadav
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, the problem of resonance in a motion of a geocentric satellite is numerically investigated under the consolidated gravitational forces of the Sun, the Earth including Earth’s equatorial ellipticity parameter and Poynting-Robertson (P-R) drag. We are presuming that bodies lying on an ecliptic plane are the Sun and the Earth, and satellite on orbital plane. Resonance is monitored between satellite’s mean motion and average angular velocity of the Earth around the Sun, and also between satellite’s mean motion and equatorial ellipticity parameter of the Earth. We also perform a systematic and thorough analysis in an attempt to understand …

Predicting rare events is a challenging problem in many complex systems arising in physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science. Simulating rare events is often prohibitive in such systems due to their high dimensionality and the numerical cost of their simulation, yet analytical expressions for rare event probabilities are usually not available. This dissertation tackles the problem of approximation of the probability of rare catastrophic events in optical communication systems and spin-torque magnetic nanodevices. With the application of the geometric minimum action method, the probability of pulse position shifts or other parameter changes in a model of an actively mode-locked laser …
