Bacteriorhodopsin is a photoactive protein found in the purple membranes of the highly halophilic bacterium Halobacterium Salinarium. Due to highly efficient and simple in its function, Bacteriorhodopsin has been extensively researched and successfully incorporated into many practical applications. In this regard, the fabrication of compactly packed and functionally active Bacteriorhodopsin thin film is crucial in realizing a highly efficient device. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the mechanical and thermodynamic properties of the Bacteriorhodopsin-Langmuir monolayer film from the surface pressure-area per molecule isotherm to produce a compactly pact and functionally active monolayer film. For this, we have proposed …

Several iron containing superconductors are discovered in 2008. The discovery introduced a new class of high-temperature superconductors, which are iron-based. The iron-based superconductors do not resemble conventional superconductors and have properties on their own which differ from the cuprates. We have studied the iron selenium, FeSe compound by removing some Se atoms from the lattice forming Fe:Se = 2:1 and 8:6 and also by replacing the Se vacancy with tellurium, samarium and oxygen atoms forming Fe:Se:Te = 2:1:1 and 8:6:2, Fe:Se:O = 8:6:2 and 8:4:2, FeSeSmO, FeSeTeO, Fe2SeSm2O2, FeSeTeSmO and FeTeSmO. The band structures for each lattice are calculated by …

Spectroscopic Analysis Of Tungsten Oxide Thin Films For Sensor Applications, Jose Luis Enriquez Carrejo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
The objective of this study is targeted toward improving the quality of pure tungsten oxide (WO3) for application to the detection of poisoning gases, especially of H2S. While pure WO3 is a recognized candidate for gas sensing, its characteristics are strongly dependent on the conditions and methods used in its deposition.
Samples of WO3 thin films analyzed in this work were grown on silicon and sapphire substrates using RF magnetron sputtering at a number of different substrate temperatures and Ar:O2 pressure ratios. The properties of the samples were investigated spectroscopically with the goal of determining how variations in the above …

Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Large-scale atomistic simulations of shock-wave propagation in single crystals exhibit large anisotropies in the elastic-plastic and solid-liquid transitions. Characteristic of this type of simulations are the large strains at which the crystal yields plastically, regardless of crystal orientation. At these large strains, uniaxial deformations, such as those produced in planar shock loading generate dynamical instabilities. We have investigated the directional anisotropy of the elastic limit in bcc crystals, in particular Tantalum (Ta), employing molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We show that the elastic - plastic transition in BCC defect-free crystals is caused by the appearance of soft-phonon modes and not via …

We investigated the infrared response of LuFe2O4 through the series of charge, magnetic, and structural transitions. All vibrational modes couple strongly to the charge order, whereas the LuO zone-folding modes are also sensitive to magnetic order and structural distortion. The dramatic splitting of the LuO2 layer mode is attributed to charge-rich/poor proximity effects and its temperature dependence reveals the antipolar nature of the W layer pattern.

In order to investigate band gap tunability in polar oxides, we measured the optical properties of a series of Bi(Fe1−xMnx)O3 thin films. The absorption response of the mixed metal solid solutions is approximately a linear combination of the characteristics of the two end members, a result that demonstrates straightforward band gap tunability in this system.

Reflection and transmission as a function of temperature (5–300 K) have been measured on a single crystal of the magnetoelectric ferrimagnetic compound Cu2OSeO3 utilizing light spanning the far infrared to the visible portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The complex dielectric function and optical properties were obtained via Kramers-Kronig analysis and by fits to a Drude-Lortentz model. The fits of the infrared phonons show a magnetodielectric effect near the transition temperature (Tc~60 K). Assignments to strong far-infrared phonon modes have been made, especially those exhibiting anomalous behavior around the transition temperature.

We have developed the means to grow BiMnO3 thin films with unparalleled structural perfection by reactive molecular-beam epitaxy and determined its band gap. Film growth occurs in an adsorption-controlled growth regime. Within this growth window bounded by oxygen pressure and substrate temperature at a fixed bismuth overpressure, single-phase films of the metastable perovskite BiMnO3 may be grown by epitaxial stabilization. X-ray diffraction reveals phase-pure and epitaxial films with w rocking curve full width at half maximum values as narrow as 11 arc sec (0.003°). Optical absorption measurements reveal that BiMnO3 has a direct band gap of 1.1±0.1 …

Using first-principles density-functional calculations, we demonstrate that ferromagnetism can be induced and modulated on an otherwise paramagnetic Pd metal thin-film surface through application of an external electric field. As free charges are either accumulated or depleted at the Pd surface to screen the applied electric field, there is a corresponding change in the surface density of states. This change can be made sufficient for the Fermi-level density of states to satisfy the Stoner criterion, driving a transition locally at the surface from a paramagnetic state to an itinerant ferromagnetic state above a critical applied electric field, Ec. Furthermore, …

Using a ferroelectric barrier as a functional material in a (magnetic) tunnel junction has recently attracted significant interest due to new functionalities not available in conventional tunnel junctions. Switching a ferroelectric polarization of the barrier alters conductance resulting in a tunneling electroresistance (TER) effect. Using a ferroelectric barrier in a magnetic tunnel junction makes it mutiferroic where TER coexists with tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR). Here we develop a simple model for a multiferroic tunnel junction (MFTJ) which consists of two ferromagnetic electrodes separated by a ferroelectric barrier layer. The model explicitly includes the spin-dependent screening potential and thus extends previously developed …

Interlayer Exchange Coupling Across A Ferroelectric Barrier, M. Ye. Zhuravlev, A. V. Vedyayev, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal

A new magnetoelectric effect is predicted originating from the interlayer exchange coupling between two ferromagnetic layers separated by an ultrathin ferroelectric barrier. It is demonstrated that ferroelectric polarization switching driven by an external electric field leads to a sizable change in the interlayer exchange coupling. The effect occurs in asymmetric ferromagnet/ferroelectric/ferromagnet junctions due to a change in the electrostatic potential profile across the junction affecting the interlayer coupling. The predicted phenomenon indicates the possibility of switching the magnetic configuration by reversing the polarization of the ferroelectric barrier layer.

Based on first-principles and model calculations we investigate the effect of polar interfaces on the ferroelectric stability of thin-film ferroelectrics. As a representative model, we consider a TiO2 -terminated BaTiO3 film with LaO monolayers at the two interfaces that serve as doping layers. We find that the polar interfaces create an intrinsic electric field that is screened by the electron charge leaking into the BaTiO3 layer. The amount of the leaking charge is controlled by the boundary conditions which are different for three heterostructures considered, namely, vacuum/LaO/BaTiO3 /LaO, LaO/BaTiO3 , and SrRuO3 /LaO/BaTiO3 …

First-principles calculations demonstrate the evolution of the band alignment at La0.7A0.3MnO3 / La1−xAxO / TiO2 / SrTiO3 (001) heterointerfaces, where A=Ca, Sr, or Ba, as the interfacial A-site composition, La1−xAx, is varied from x=0.5 to x=1.0. This variation leads to a linear change in the SrTiO3 valence-band offset with respect to the Fermi level of the La0.7A0.3MnO3 metal electrode and hence to a linear change in the Schottky barrier height at this interface. The effect arises due to electrostatic …

Neutrons scattered or reflected from a diffraction grating are subject to a periodic potential analogous to the potential experienced by electrons within a crystal. Hence, the wavefunction of the neutrons can be expanded in terms of Bloch waves and a dynamical theory can be applied to interpret the scattering phenomenon. In this paper, a dynamical theory is used to calculate the results of neutron spin-echo resolved grazing-incidence scattering (SERGIS) from a silicon diffraction grating with a rectangular profile. The calculations are compared with SERGIS measurements made on the same grating at two neutron sources: a pulsed source and a continuous …

Two-Way Diffusion Model For Short Exposure Holographic Grating Formation In Acrylamide-Based Photopolymer, Tzvetanka Babeva, Izabela Naydenova, Dana Mackey, Suzanne Martin, Vincent Toal

A theoretical model for formation of a short exposure holographic grating is presented. The model accounts for both monomer and polymer diffusion and distinguishes between short polymer chains capable of diffusing and long polymer chains that are immobile. It is shown that the experimentally observed decrease of diffraction efficiency at higher spatial frequency can be predicted by assuming diffusion of short-chain polymers away from the bright fringes. The time evolution of the refractive index modulation after short exposure is calculated and compared with experimental results. The effects of diffusion coefficients, polymerization rates, intensity and spatial frequency of recording on the …

Novel nanocomposites consisting of a water soluble acrylamide–based photopolymer and colloidal zeolite nanoparticles of zeolite Beta and zeolite A were prepared. The interactions between the photopolymer components and zeolite nanoparticles in the photopolymerizable nanocomposites were characterized for the first time by 13C NMR and Visible spectroscopy. It was found that the zeolite Beta nanoparticles (up to 5% wt.) behave as a non-inert additive, resulting in an effective increase in layer thickness that causes doubling of the diffraction efficiency of the nanocomposite in comparison to that of the undoped photopolymer. On the other hand, the nanocomposite containing zeolite A nanoparticles showed …

The optical properties of photopolymer layers consisting of an acrylamide–based matrix and microporous aluminophosphate nanocrystals of AEI- type are investigated. The compatibility of the photopolymer doped with the nanoparticles is studied. The surface and volume properties of the layers with different levels of doping with microporous nanocrystals are characterized. The effective refractive indices and absorption coefficients of the doped photopolymer layers are determined and used to calculate the refractive index and porosity of pure AEI nanoparticles used as dopants. Volume transmission gratings were recorded in the doped photopolymer layers at different spatial frequencies. By spatial monitoring of the characteristic Raman …

We describe the optimisation of the holographic patterning of sub-micrometer surface relief structures in an acrylamide-based photopolymer. A substantial improvement in the photoinduced surface relief resolution was achieved by altering the photopolymer chemical composition and by introducing a single step post recording thermal treatment of the layers. It was observed that, by optimisation of the chemical composition of the photopolymer layers, the maximum achievable spatial frequency increases from 200 l/mm to 550 l/mm. The improvement of the surface relief amplitude by alteration of the chemical composition is limited due to the fact that both decrease of the plasticiser and increase …
