Equilibrium And Non-Equilibrium Ultrafast Carrier Transport And Dynamics In Chalcopyrite Semiconductors, Rishmali Thanuja Sooriyagoda
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Chalcopyrite crystals in the II-IV-V2 family have received significant interest due to their high nonlinearity, composition-tunable bandgaps, wide transparency windows, and high damage threshold. These semiconductors have been explored for electromagnetic (EM) screening, spintronic and photovoltaic applications, making them good optical and optoelectronic materials. This thesis uses terahertz spectroscopy to understand optical, electronic, and vibrational dynamical processes in CdGeP2, ZnGeP2 and CdSiP2 chalcopyrite semiconductors.
We have employed Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy to investigate temperature-dependent ground-state properties of bulk chalcopyrite crystals that can be related to electronic transport and electron-lattice interactions. The complex spectra provide refraction and …

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Since its discovery more than a century ago, the fascinating phenomenon of superconductivity remains as mysterious as ever with the greatest challenge facing the condensed matter community being the elusive understanding of the microscopic origin leading to its inception. Many outstanding questions remain of which the role played by nematic fluctuations and structural disorder for the stabilization of superconductivity is not well understood. In this respect, superconducting YBa2Cu3O6+x (YBCO)-type cuprates present an ideal framework in which charge doping, structural disorder and various site manipulations can be explored in efforts to address some of these questions. Extensive synthesis and characterization efforts …
Strongly Correlated Phases In Quantum Hall Systems,

Strongly Correlated Phases In Quantum Hall Systems, Amartya Saha
Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
Quantum Hall systems have a one-body energy spectrum consisting of dispersion-less Landau levels. Electron-electron interactions thus dominate in partially filled Landau levels, which exhibit a myriad of strongly correlated phases such as quantum hall ferromagnets and fractional quantum Hall phases. We study two examples of these phenomena.
In the first project, we explore the ground state of a system with an interface between two semi-infinite regions with fillings ν= 4 and ν= 3 respectively. The width of the interface can be controlled by varying the background potential, which provides an additional tuning parameter. For a certain range of …

Magnetization Dynamics In Kagome Artificial Spin Ice Considering The Effect Of Vertex And Geometrical Lattice Distortion, Ali Frotanpour
Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
Artificial spin ices (ASI) have been shown to exhibit dynamic magnetic responses that are dramatically different from plane magnetic thin films. A number of magnetic ASI have been fabricated and measured in recent years. However, some important effects including influence of vertex and geometrical distortion on their dynamic response have not been addressed. This dissertation adopts Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR) spectroscopy to study magnetization dynamics in fabricated artificial spin ices with a contentiously distorted Honeycomb geometry with the specific goal of exploring how the vertex and lattice distortion affect the dynamic magnetic response. Samples were patterned using electron beam lithography techniques. …

Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
The dissertation includes two parts.
In Part I, we study non-equilibrium phenomena in various models associated with global quantum quench. It is known that local quantities, when subjected to global quantum quench across or approaching critical points, exhibit a variety of universal scaling behaviors at various quench rates. To investigate if similar scaling holds for non-local quantities, we consider the scaling behavior of circuit complexity under quantum quench across the critical massless point in Majorana fermion field theory of the one-dimensional integrable transverse field Ising model and find it obeys such scaling. To investigate if similar scaling holds for non-relativistic …
Equations Of State For Warm Dense Carbon From Quantum Espresso,

Equations Of State For Warm Dense Carbon From Quantum Espresso, Derek J. Schauss
Theses and Dissertations
Warm dense plasma is the matter that exists, roughly, in the range of 10,000 to 10,000,000 Kelvin and has solid-like densities, typically between 0.1 and 10 grams per centimeter. Warm dense fluids like hydrogen, helium, and carbon are believed to make up the interiors of many planets, white dwarfs, and other stars in our universe. The existence of warm dense matter (WDM) on Earth, however, is very rare, as it can only be created with high-energy sources like a nuclear explosion. In such an event, theoretical and computational models that accurately predict the response of certain materials are thus very …

Ligand Effects On Electronic, Magnetic, And Catalytic Properties Of Clusters And Cluster Assemblies, Dinesh Bista 9288522
Theses and Dissertations
Ligands commonly protect metallic clusters against reacting with outside reactants. However, ligands can also be used to control the redox properties enabling the formation of super donors/acceptors that can donate/accept multiple electrons. This thesis focuses on how the ligands can be used to control the electronic and magnetic features of clusters and ligand stabilized cluster-based assemblies, leading to nano pn junctions with directed transport, the possibility of light-harvesting, and catalysts for cross-coupling reactions. The thesis addresses three distinct classes of clusters and their applications. The first class of cluster “metal chalcogen clusters” is the central idea of the thesis focused …

Majorana Nanostructures And Their Electrostatic Environment, Benjamin David Woods
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Majorana zero modes (MZMs) are zero-energy excitations emerging in one- and two-dimensional topological superconductors. These exotic modes have attracted much attention in the last decade due to their topological protection and non-Abelian statistics, which make them possible building blocks for topological quantum computation. In particular, semiconductor-superconductor (SM-SC) nanostructures have attracted the most attention with several measurements being consistent with the presence of MZMs. Debate continues, however, whether MZMs or topologically-trivial Andreev bound states are responsible for such measurements.
In order to interpret experimental results distinguishing MZMs from Andreev bound states and gain a better understanding of what conditions need to …

Owing to its successful application to complex molecular systems, computational density functional theory (DFT) has been used to study the effect of an electric field on the molecular polarizability and HOMO–LUMO gap of 1-phenyl-4-{2-[(1s,4r)-4-pentylcyclohexyl]ethyl}benzene (1) and its fluoro-, chloro-, and cyano- derivatives, namely, 1-fluoro-4-(4-{2-[(1s,4r)-4-pentylcyclohexyl]ethyl}phenyl)benzene (2), 1-chloro-4-(4-{2-[(1s,4r)-4-pentylcyclohexyl]ethyl}phenyl)benzene (3), and 4-(4-{2-[(1s,4r)-4-pentylcyclohexyl]ethyl}phenyl)benzonitrile (4). These molecules belong to the family of nematic liquid crystals with three rings: two benzene and one cyclohexane. Furthermore, two DFT approaches, namely, B3LYP and M062X, have been used to examine the results obtained. This study reveals a remarkable feature: the polarizability of these molecules follows nearly a step function …

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) has become a critical tool for characterization of materials in fields such as physics, material science, chemistry, and biology. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) is an increasingly useful technique because of its high resolution in three dimensions, the sample does not need to be conductive, and the technique does not need to take place in vacuum. AFM can image a wide variety of topographies and many different types of materials. AFM can deliver 3D topography information from the angstrom level to the micron scale with high resolution. One of the most important aspects of Atomic Force Microscopy …

The Importance Of Frontier Orbital Symmetry In The Adsorption Of Diiodobenzene On Mos2(0001), Prescott E. Evans, Zahra Hooshmand, Talat S. Rahman, Peter Dowben
Peter Dowben Publications
Evidence of a role of frontier orbital symmetry, in the adsorption process of diiodobenzene on MoS2(0001), appears in the huge differences in the rate of adsorption between 1,3-diiodobenzene, 1,2-diiodobenzene and 1,4-diiodobenzene isomers on MoS2. Experiments indicate that the rate of adsorption of 1,3-diiodobenzene on MoS2(0001) is much greater than that of the 1,2-diodobenzene and 1,4-diiodbenzene isomers. As the differences in calculated diiodobenzene isomer-MoS2 system adsorption energies and electron affinities are negligible, frontier orbital symmetry appears to play a significant role in diiodobenzene adsorption on MoS2(0001). The experimental and theory results, in combination, suggest …

Stability Of Group Four Monochalcogenides In Water And Air, William Shattuck
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Previously published works have simulated the behavior of monolayer group IV monochalcogenides and predicted them to have very useful electronic properties. These simulations have also predicted that monolayers of group IV monochalcogenides will degrade quickly when exposed to water, even in extremely low concentrations. We hypothesize that thin samples of these materials will show signs of degradation if left in air and in water for an extended period of time.
Samples of each of the four monochalcogenides (GeS, GeSe, SnS and SnSe) were exfoliated onto clean oxidized silicon substrates. Chemical analysis showed the SnSe samples were contaminated, so they were …

Spintronic structures are extensively investigated for their spin-orbit torque properties, required for magnetic commutation functionalities. Current progress in these materials is dependent on the interface engineering for the optimization of spin transmission. Here, we advance the analysis of ultrafast spin-charge conversion phenomena at ferromagnetic-Transition metal interfaces due to their inverse spin-Hall effect properties. In particular, the intrinsic inverse spin-Hall effect of Pt-based systems and extrinsic inverse spin-Hall effect of Au:W and Au:Ta in NiFe/Au:(W,Ta) bilayers are investigated. The spin-charge conversion is probed by complementary techniques-ultrafast THz time-domain spectroscopy in the dynamic regime for THz pulse emission and ferromagnetic resonance spin-pumping …

Band Structure Topology And Spin Transport In Magnon Systems, Bo Li
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
As the spin excitation quanta in magnetic materials, the magnon is at the heart of the spintronics research because it plays a key role in magnetic dynamics, energy and spin transport, and even determining the ground state of magnetic systems. In this thesis, we will study the band-structure topology and transport properties of magnons in both collinear and noncollinear magnets. Inspired by the great success of topological insulators, exploring magnon topology can unveil the topological nature of bosonic particles and widen the zoo of topological materials. We propose a three-dimensional magnon topological insulator model protected by sublattice chiral symmetries, which …

Magnetic systems have been extensively studied both from a fundamental physics perspective and as building blocks for a variety of applications. Their topological properties, in particular those of excitations, remain relatively unexplored due to their inherently dissipative nature. The recent introduction of non-Hermitian topological classifications opens up new opportunities for engineering topological phases in dissipative systems. Here, we propose a magnonic realization of a non-Hermitian topological system. A crucial ingredient of our proposal is the injection of spin current into the magnetic system, which alters and can even change the sign of terms describing dissipation. We show that the magnetic …

Gate-tunable spin-dependent properties could be induced in graphene at room temperature through the magnetic proximity effect by placing it in contact with a metallic ferromagnet. Because strong chemical bonding with the metallic substrate makes gating ineffective, an intervening passivation layer is needed. Previously considered passivation layers result in a large shift of the Dirac point away from the Fermi level, so that unrealistically large gate fields are required to tune the spin polarization in graphene (Gr). We show that a monolayer of Au or Pt used as the passivation layer between Co and graphene brings the Dirac point closer to …
