How To Estimate Resilient Modulus For Unbound Aggregate Materials: A Theoretical Explanation Of An Empirical Formula, Pedro Barragan Olague, Soheil Nazarian, Vladik Kreinovich, Afshin Gholamy

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

To ensure the quality of pavement, it is important to make sure that the resilient moduli -- that describe the stiffness of all the pavement layers -- exceed a certain threshold. From the mechanical viewpoint, pavement is a non-linear medium. Several empirical formulas have been proposed to describe this non-linearity. In this paper, we describe a theoretical explanation for the most accurate of these empirical formulas.

How To Make A Solution To A Territorial Dispute More Realistic: Taking Into Account Uncertainty, Emotions, And Step-By-Step Approach, Mahdokhat Afravi, Vladik Kreinovich 2016 The University of Texas at El Paso

How To Make A Solution To A Territorial Dispute More Realistic: Taking Into Account Uncertainty, Emotions, And Step-By-Step Approach, Mahdokhat Afravi, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many real-life situations, it is necessary to divide a disputed territory between several interested parties. The usual way to perform this division is by using Nash's bargaining solution, i.e., by finding a partition that maximizes the product of the participants' utilities. However, this solution is based on several idealized assumptions: that we know the exact values of all the utilities, that division is performed on a purely rational basis, with no emotions involved, and that the entire decision is made once. In practice, we only know the utilities with some uncertainty, emotions are often involved, and the solution is …

On Phase Ii Monitoring Of The Probability Distributions Of Univariate Continuous Processes, Partha Sarathi Mukherjee 2016 Boise State University

On Phase Ii Monitoring Of The Probability Distributions Of Univariate Continuous Processes, Partha Sarathi Mukherjee

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Statistical process control (SPC) charts are widely used in industry for monitoring the stability of certain sequential processes like manufacturing, health care systems etc. Most SPC charts assume that the parametric form of the “in-control” process distribution F1 is available. However, it has been demonstrated in the literature that their performances are unreliable when the pre-specified process distribution is incorrect. Moreover, most SPC charts are designed to detect any shift in mean and/or variance. In real world problems, shifts in higher moments can happen without much change in mean or variance. If we fail to detect those and let …

Prefrontal White Matter Pathology In Air Pollution Exposed Mexico City Young Urbanites And Their Potential Impact On Neurovascular Unit Dysfunction And The Development Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Partha S. Mukherjee 2016 Boise State University

Prefrontal White Matter Pathology In Air Pollution Exposed Mexico City Young Urbanites And Their Potential Impact On Neurovascular Unit Dysfunction And The Development Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Partha S. Mukherjee

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Millions of urban children are chronically exposed to high concentrations of air pollutants, i.e., fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone, associated with increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Compared with children living with clear air those in Mexico City (MC) exhibit systemic, brain and intrathecal inflammation, low CSF Aβ 42, breakdown of the BBB, attention and short-term memory deficits, prefrontal white matter hyperintensities, damage to epithelial and endothelial barriers, tight junction and neural autoantibodies, and Alzheimer and Parkinson's hallmarks. The prefrontal white matter is a target of air pollution. We examined by light and electron microscopy the prefrontal …

What Is The True Cost To Stay In The Hospital?, Samantha Alicandro 2016 Bryant University

What Is The True Cost To Stay In The Hospital?, Samantha Alicandro

Honors Projects in Mathematics

Currently, the unfortunate reality that receiving diverse health procedures can be extremely expensive is widely acknowledged and woefully accepted. However, have you inquired or been curious about the specific factors that influence the cost per day expensed by a hospital? Through examination, investigation, and evaluation operating SAS Enterprise Guide, SAS Enterprise Miner and Tableau I have attempted to arrive at a conclusion for this very question. Utilizing a 1.5 million row data set provided by Rhode Island, for the years 2003-2013, I analyzed the assorted elements conceivably bearing impact on the cost per day at a hospital. Regressions, decision trees, …

Collaboration And Creativity In Southern Califonia: An Offering, Gizem Karaali, Ami Radunskaya

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

WiMSoCal (Women in Math in Southern California) is a regional conference in its ninth incarnation. The conference is the result of the efforts of Professor Cymra Haskell (USC) to create a supportive local community for women mathematicians. At our first meeting in 2007, a confluence of Ami’s EDGE regional cluster and Cymra’s WISE group at USC, we socialized, got to know each other and brainstormed about what we, as a group, would like to see happen. It was clear that our younger colleagues wanted to meet as mathematicians, sharing intellectual ideas as well as anecdotes from the trenches.

Does Academic Performance Predict Workplace Productivity?, Jodie-gaye Hunter 2016 Bryant University

Does Academic Performance Predict Workplace Productivity?, Jodie-Gaye Hunter

Honors Projects in Economics

This research examines if college GPA affects productivity and compensation in the workplace. It uses data collected from a survey of approximately 23,000 Bryant University graduates in different stages of their career. About 10 percent of the alumni surveyed completed the survey. The econometric model used in this study allows estimating the effect of GPA on income after controlling for various demographic and socioeconomic variables, including education, major, occupation, gender, among others. The empirical work provides evidence that GPA has a positive and statistically significant impact on workplace productivity for females, but GPA seems to be a weaker predictor of …

Two Generalizations Of The Filippov Operation, Menevse Eryuzlu 2016 Western Kentucky University

Two Generalizations Of The Filippov Operation, Menevse Eryuzlu

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this thesis is to generalize Filippov's operation, and to get more useful results. It includes two main parts: The C-Filippov operation for the finite and countable cases and the Filippov operation with different measures. In the first chapter, we give brief information about the importance of Filippov's operation, our goal and the ideas behind our generalizations. In the second chapter, we give some sufficient background notes. In the third chapter, we introduce the Filippov operation, explain how to calculate the Filippov of a function and give some sufficient properties of it. In the fourth chapter, we introduce …

Fuzzy Techniques Provide A Theoretical Explanation For The Heuristic L^P-Regularization Of Signals And Images, Fernando Cervantes, Bryan E. Usevitch, Leobardo Valera, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

One of the main techniques used to de-noise and de-blur signals and images is regularization, which is based on the fact that signals and images are usually smoother than noise. Traditional Tikhonov regularization assumes that signals and images are differentiable, but, as Mandelbrot has shown in his fractal theory, many signals and images are not differentiable. To de-noise and de-blur such images, researchers have designed a heuristic method of l^p-regularization.

l^p-regularization leads to good results, but it is not used as widely as should be, because it lacks a convincing theoretical explanation -- and thus, practitioners are often reluctant to …

Membership Functions Representing A Number Vs. Representing A Set: Proof Of Unique Reconstruction, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva 2016 New Mexico State University - Main Campus

Membership Functions Representing A Number Vs. Representing A Set: Proof Of Unique Reconstruction, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In some cases, a membership function m(x) represents an unknown number, but in many other cases, it represents an unknown crisp set. In this case, for each crisp set S, we can estimate the degree m(S) to which this set S is the desired one. A natural question is: once we know the values m(S) corresponding to all possible crisp sets S, can we reconstruct the original membership function? In this paper, we show that the original membership function m(x) can indeed be uniquely reconstructed from the values m(S).

Conjugacy Geodesics In Coxeter Groups, Aaron Calderon 2016 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Conjugacy Geodesics In Coxeter Groups, Aaron Calderon

UCARE: Research Products

Take a square and flip it over the vertical axis, rotate it 90 degrees counterclockwise and then flip it again over the vertical axis. This sequence is the same as a 90 degree clockwise rotation but takes more steps to demonstrate the same symmetry. In general, the question of when a sequence of symmetries has minimal length is hard to answer and is dependent on the chosen generating set (in our toy example, rotation by 90 degrees and reflection). By realizing sequences of symmetries as paths in a group's Cayley graph, the problem becomes one about the set of shortest …

Generalized Splines On Arbitrary Graphs, Simcha Gilbert, Julianna Tymoczko, Shira Viel 2016 Smith College

Generalized Splines On Arbitrary Graphs, Simcha Gilbert, Julianna Tymoczko, Shira Viel

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

Let G be a graph whose edges are labeled by ideals of a commutative ring. We introduce a generalized spline, which is a vertex labeling of G by elements of the ring so that the difference between the labels of any two adjacent vertices lies in the corresponding edge ideal. Generalized splines arise naturally in combinatorics (algebraic splines of Billera and others) and in algebraic topology (certain equivariant cohomology rings, described by Goresky, Kottwitz, and MacPherson, among others). The central question of this paper asks when an arbitrary edge-labeled graph has nontrivial generalized splines. The answer is “always”, and we …

Decompositions Of Ideals Of Minors Meeting A Submatrix, Kent M. Neuerburg, Zach Teitler 2016 Southeastern Louisiana University

Decompositions Of Ideals Of Minors Meeting A Submatrix, Kent M. Neuerburg, Zach Teitler

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We compute the primary decomposition of certain ideals generated by subsets of minors in a generic matrix or in a generic symmetric matrix, or subsets of Pfaffians in a generic skew-symmetric matrix. Specifically, the ideals we consider are generated by minors that have at least some given number of rows and columns in certain submatrices.

Quandle Coloring And Cocycle Invariants Of Composite Knots And Abelian Extensions, W Edwin Clark, Masahico Saito, Leandro Vendramin 2016 University of South Florida

Quandle Coloring And Cocycle Invariants Of Composite Knots And Abelian Extensions, W Edwin Clark, Masahico Saito, Leandro Vendramin

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Quandle colorings and cocycle invariants are studied for composite knots, and applied to chirality and abelian extensions. The square and granny knots, for example, can be distinguished by quandle colorings, so that a trefoil and its mirror can be distinguished by quandle coloring of composite knots. We investigate this and related phenomena. Quandle cocycle invariants are studied in relation to quandle coloring of the connected sum, and formulas are given for computing the cocycle invariant from the number of colorings of composite knots. Relations to corresponding abelian extensions of quandles are studied, and extensions are examined for the table of …

Regularity Of Solutions And The Free Boundary For A Class Of Bernoulli-Type Parabolic Free Boundary Problems With Variable Coefficients, Thomas H. Backing 2016 Purdue University

Regularity Of Solutions And The Free Boundary For A Class Of Bernoulli-Type Parabolic Free Boundary Problems With Variable Coefficients, Thomas H. Backing

Open Access Dissertations

In this work the regularity of solutions and of the free boundary for a type of parabolic free boundary problem with variable coefficients is proved. After introducing the problem and its history in the introduction, we proceed in Chapter 2 to prove the optimal Lipschitz regularity of viscosity solutions under the main assumption that the free boundary is Lipschitz. In Chapter 3, we prove that Lipschitz free boundaries possess a classical normal in both space and time at each point and that this normal varies with a Hölder modulus of continuity. As a consequence, the viscosity solution is in fact …

Rank Constrained Homotopies Of Matrices And The Blackadar-Handelman Conjectures On C*-Algebras, Kaushika De Silva 2016 Purdue University

Rank Constrained Homotopies Of Matrices And The Blackadar-Handelman Conjectures On C*-Algebras, Kaushika De Silva

Open Access Dissertations

Rank constrained homotopies of matrices:

For any n ≥ k ≥ l ∈ N, let S( n,k,l) be the set of all non-negative definite matrices a ∈ Mn(C) with l ≤ rank a ≤ k. We investigate homotopy equivalence of continuous maps from a compact Hausdorff space X into sets of the form S(n,k,l). From [37] it is known that for any n, if 4dim X ≤ k-l where dim X denote the covering dimension of X, then there is exactly one homotopy class of maps from X into S …
