Sexual Assault And The Doctrine Of Chances, Ryan Wallentine
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Sexual assault is a crime whose offenders often commit multiple acts and its victims experience devastating effects. The doctrine of chances is a rule of evidence that may allow evidences of these past events or circumstances to be presented in a court case given they meet certain criteria. This research argues the probability of being innocently prosecuted for rape multiple times is sufficiently low to meet at least one of the criteria for the doctrine of chances to be used in a sexual assault case. Additional implications and related areas of research are included as well.

Neighborhood-Restricted Achromatic Colorings Of Graphs, James D. Chandler Sr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A (closed) neighborhood-restricted 2-achromatic-coloring of a graph G is an assignment of colors to the vertices of G such that no more than two colors are assigned in any closed neighborhood. In other words, for every vertex v in G, the vertex v and its neighbors are in at most two different color classes. The 2-achromatic number is defined as the maximum number of colors in any 2-achromatic-coloring of G. We study the 2-achromatic number. In particular, we improve a known upper bound and characterize the extremal graphs for some other known bounds.

Isomorphisms Of Landau-Ginzburg B-Models, Nathan James Cordner
Theses and Dissertations
Landau-Ginzburg mirror symmetry predicts isomorphisms between graded Frobenius algebras (denoted A and B) that are constructed from a nondegenerate quasihomogeneous polynomial W and a related group of symmetries G. In 2013, Tay proved that given two polynomials W1, W2 with the same quasihomogeneous weights and same group G, the corresponding A-models built with (W1, G) and (W2, G) are isomorphic. An analogous theorem for isomorphisms between orbifolded B-models remains to be found. This thesis investigates isomorphisms between B-models using polynomials in two variables in search of such a theorem. In particular, several examples are given showing the relationship between continuous …

Hydra Effects In Stable Communities And Their Implications For System Dynamics, Michael H. Cortez, Peter A. Abrams
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications
A hydra effect occurs when the mean density of a species increases in response to greater mortality. We show that, in a stable multispecies system, a species exhibits a hydra effect only if maintaining that species at its equilibrium density destabilizes the system. The stability of the original system is due to the responses of the hydra-effect species to changes in the other species’ densities. If that dynamical feedback is removed by fixing the density of the hydra-effect species, large changes in the community make-up (including the possibility of species extinction) can occur. This general result has several implications: (1) …

How Do Manipulatives Help Students Communicate Their Understanding Of Double-Digit Subtraction?, Rabab Abi-Hanna
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Multi-digit subtraction is difficult for students to learn. The purpose of this study is to explore how second-grade students communicate their understanding of double-digit subtraction through the use of manipulatives/tools. This qualitative study reports on six case studies of second-grade students where clinical interviews were the main source of data. Findings suggest that manipulatives/tools helped reveal cognitive constructs and difficulties that the handwritten algorithms were not conveying. For example, students who exhibited an understanding of the subtraction process had not yet developed an understanding of ten and 10 ones interchangeability. These results highlight the potential role of manipulatives/tools as communication …

Bayesian Models For Repeated Measures Data Using Markov Chain Monte Carlo Methods, Yuanzhi Li
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Bayesian models for repeated measures data are fitted to three different data an analysis projects. Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methodology is applied to each case with Gibbs sampling and/or an adaptive Metropolis-Hastings (MH) algorithm used to simulate the posterior distribution of parameters. We implement a Bayesian model with different variance-covariance structures to an audit fee data set. Block structures and linear models for variances are used to examine the linear trend and different behaviors before and after regulatory change during year 2004-2005. We proposed a Bayesian hierarchical model with latent teacher effects, to determine whether teacher professional development (PD) …

A Spatiotemporal Mountain Pine Beetle Outbreak Model Predicting Severity, Cycle Period, And Invasion Speed, Jacob P. Duncan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The mountain pine beetle (MPB, Dendroctonus ponderosae), a tree-killing bark beetle, has historically been part of the normal disturbance regime in lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) forests. In recent years, warm winters and summers have allowed MPB populations to achieve synchronous emergence and successful attacks, resulting in widespread population outbreaks and resultant tree mortality across western North America. We develop an age-structured forest demographic model that incorporates temperature-dependent MPB infestations: the Susceptible-Infested-Juvenile (SIJ) model. Stability of equilibria is analyzed as a function of population growth rates, and indicates the existence of periodic outbreaks that intensify as growth rates …

On The Scattering Of An Acoustic Plane Wave By A Soft Prolate Spheroid, Joseph Michael Borromeo
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This thesis solves the scattering problem in which an acoustic plane wave of propagation number K1 is scattered by a soft prolate spheroid. The interior field of the scatterer is characterized by a propagation number K2, while the field radiated by the scatterer is characterized by the propagation number K3. The three fields and their normal derivatives satisfy boundary conditions at the surface of the scatterer. These boundary conditions involve six complex parameters depending on the propagation numbers. The scattered wave also satisfies the Sommerfeld radiation condition at infinity. Through analytical methods, series representations are constructed for the interior field …

We will introduce three new vector representations of graphs. These representations are based on relationships between the vectors that are used. Specifically, we will examine scenarios where we ignore specific relationships, where we consider if information is missing, and where we look for when the information in common is not of a specified amount.

Spacetimes with symmetry play a critical role in Einstein's Theory of General Relativity. Missing from the literature is a correct, usable, and computer accessible classification of such spacetimes. This dissertation fills this gap; specifically, we
i) give a new and different approach to the classification of spacetimes with symmetry using modern methods and tools such as the Schmidt method and computer algebra systems, resulting in ninety-two spacetimes;
ii) create digital databases of the classification for easy access and use for researchers;
iii) create software to classify any spacetime metric with symmetry against the new database;
iv) compare results of our …

Definition And Construction Of Entropy Satisfying Multiresolution Analysis (Mra), Ju Y. Yi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This paper considers some numerical schemes for the approximate solution of conservation laws and various wavelet methods are reviewed. This is followed by the construction of wavelet spaces based on a polynomial framework for the approximate solution of conservation laws. Construction of a representation of the approximate solution in terms of an entropy satisfying Multiresolution Analysis (MRA) is defined. Finally, a proof of convergence of the approximate solution of conservation laws using the characterization provided by the basis functions in the MRA will be given.

We prove an implicit function theorem for non-commutative functions. We use this to show that if p ( X;Y ) is a generic non-commuting polynomial in two variables, and X is a generic matrix, then all solutions Y of p ( X;Y ) = 0 will commute with X

We present a Hilbert space geometric approach to the problem of characterizing the positive bivariate trigonometric polynomials that can be represented as the square of a two variable polynomial possessing a certain stability requirement, namely no zeros on a face of the bidisk. Two different characterizations are given using a Hilbert space structure naturally associated to the trigonometric polynomial; one is in terms of a certain orthogonal decomposition the Hilbert space must possess called the “split-shift orthogonality condition” and another is an operator theoretic or matrix condition closely related to an earlier characterization due to the first two authors. This …

Included in Ramanujan’s Notebooks are two reciprocal identities. The first identity connects the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction with an eta quotient. The second identity is a level thirteen analogue. These are special cases of a more general class of relations between eta quotients and modular functions defined by product generalizations of the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction. Each identity is shown to be a relation between generators for a certain congruence subgroup. The degree, form, and symmetry of the identities is determined from behavior at cusps of the congruence subgroup whose field of functions the parameters generate. The reciprocal identities encode information about …

Let r,c,s ∈{1,2,…,n} and let PP be a partial latin square of order n in which each nonempty cell lies in row r, column c, or contains symbol s. We show that if n ∉ {3, 4, 5} and row r, column c, and symbol s can be completed in P, then a completion of P exists. As a consequence, this proves a conjecture made by Casselgren and Häggkvist. Furthermore, we show exactly when row r, column c, and symbol s can be completed.

It has been conjectured that quantum entanglement operators can be lifted to braiding operators by the way of the topological quantum field theory axioms set forth by Witten and Atiyah. Moreover, it can be readily shown that quantum link invariants need entanglement to construct topological invariants. Given these results and the already dense mathematical framework underlying topology and quantum field theory, we propose that, through the usage of quantum algebra and bracket models, we can identify a significant area of overlap where entangling R-matrix solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation can be used to construct invariants of knots and links. Such …

This thesis comprises of three chapters relating to strategy-proofness and implementation. We provide a brief description of each chapter below.1.1 A Hurwicz Type Result in a Model with Public Good Production We consider a two-good model with an arbitrary number of agents. One of the goods is a public good and the other is a private good. Each agent has an endowment of the private good and the private good can be converted into the public good using a well-behaved production function. A Social Choice Function (SCF) associates an allocation with each admissible preference profile. We impose the following requirements …

The Ko-Lee Key Exchange Protocol With Generalized Dihedral Groups, Christopher Lloyd
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Given an arbitrary abelian group A, one may form the generalized dihedral group D(A). As D(A) is usually non-abelian, this makes it a possible candidate for use with certain non-commutative key exchange protocols. Specifically, we examine the security of using D(A) with the Ko-Lee key exchange protocol. An appropriate presentation for D(A) is developed alongside methods for computing within the group in the context of the Ko-Lee protocol. Lastly we show that for such groups Ko-Lee is susceptible to a polynomial time attack.
