A Proof Of The "Magicness" Of The Siam Construction Of A Magic Square, Joshua Arroyo 2018 Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology

A Proof Of The "Magicness" Of The Siam Construction Of A Magic Square, Joshua Arroyo

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

A magic square is an n x n array filled with n2 distinct positive integers 1, 2, ..., n2 such that the sum of the n integers in each row, column, and each of the main diagonals are the same. A Latin square is an n x n array consisting of n distinct symbols such that each symbol appears exactly once in each row and column of the square. Many articles dealing with the construction of magic squares introduce the Siam method as a "simple'' construction for magic squares. Rarely, however, does the article actually prove that the …

On Orders Of Elliptic Curves Over Finite Fields, Yujin H. Kim, Jackson Bahr, Eric Neyman, Gregory Taylor 2018 Columbia University

On Orders Of Elliptic Curves Over Finite Fields, Yujin H. Kim, Jackson Bahr, Eric Neyman, Gregory Taylor

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

In this work, we completely characterize by $j$-invariant the number of orders of elliptic curves over all finite fields $F_{p^r}$ using combinatorial arguments and elementary number theory. Whenever possible, we state and prove exactly which orders can be taken on.

Keyword-Based Patent Citation Prediction Via Information Theory, Farshad Madani, Martin Zwick, Tugrul U. Daim 2018 Portland State University

Keyword-Based Patent Citation Prediction Via Information Theory, Farshad Madani, Martin Zwick, Tugrul U. Daim

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Patent citation shows how a technology impacts other inventions, so the number of patent citations (backward citations) is used in many technology prediction studies. Current prediction methods use patent citations, but since it may take a long time till a patent is cited by other inventors, identifying impactful patents based on their citations is not an effective way. The prediction method offered in this article predicts patent citations based on the content of patents. In this research, Reconstructability Analysis (RA), which is based on information theory and graph theory, is applied to predict patent citations based on keywords extracted from …

Groups Generated By Automata Arising From Transformations Of The Boundaries Of Rooted Trees, Elsayed Ahmed 2018 University of South Florida

Groups Generated By Automata Arising From Transformations Of The Boundaries Of Rooted Trees, Elsayed Ahmed

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation we study groups of automorphisms of rooted trees arising from the transformations of the boundaries of these trees. The boundary of every regular rooted tree can be endowed with various algebraic structures. The transformations of these algebraic structures under certain conditions induce endomorphisms or automorphisms of the tree itself that can be described using the language of Mealy automata. This connection can be used to study boundarytransformations using the propertiesof the induced endomorphisms, or vice versa.

We concentrate on two ways to interpret the boundary of the rooted d-regular tree. In the first approach discussed in detail …

A Comparison Of Algorithms For Finding An Efficient Theme Park Tour, Liz Bouzarth, Richard J. Forrester, Kevin Hutson, Rahul Isaac, James Midkiff, Danny Rivers, Leonard J. Testa 2018 Furman University

A Comparison Of Algorithms For Finding An Efficient Theme Park Tour, Liz Bouzarth, Richard J. Forrester, Kevin Hutson, Rahul Isaac, James Midkiff, Danny Rivers, Leonard J. Testa

Mathematics Publications

The problem of efficiently touring a theme park so as to minimize the amount of time spent in queues is an instance of the Traveling Salesman Problem with Time-Dependent Service Times (TSP-TS). In this paper, we present a mixed-integer linear programming formulation of the TSP-TS and describe a branch-and-cut algorithm based on this model. In addition, we develop a lower bound for the TSP-TS and describe two metaheuristic approaches for obtaining good quality solutions: a genetic algorithm and a tabu search algorithm. Using test instances motivated by actual theme park data, we conduct a computational study to compare the effectiveness …

Evidence For Maxwell's Equations, Fields, Force Laws And Alternative Theories Of Classical Electrodynamics, Max Tran 2018 CUNY Kingsborough Community College

Evidence For Maxwell's Equations, Fields, Force Laws And Alternative Theories Of Classical Electrodynamics, Max Tran

Publications and Research

The set of equations known today as Maxwell's equations along with a few constitutive equations lie at the heart of classical electromagnetism. A common misconception held by many is that Maxwell's equations are essential, and that classical electromagnetic theory is settled science and is no longer an active field of investigations. We will review the four Maxwell's equations and related equations, their supporting experimental evidence, the field concept, and the Lorentz and Ritz force laws. We will give a brief outline of two approaches to classical electromagnetism which bypass Maxwell's equations, the propagated potential approach and the direct action approach …

Quantitative Validation Of Simulated Sea Ice Displacements, Bryan R. McCormick 2018 University of New Mexico

Quantitative Validation Of Simulated Sea Ice Displacements, Bryan R. Mccormick

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Accurate simulations of Arctic sea ice are important for forecasting as well as for understanding the global climate. However, quantitative measures for simulation displacements are underutilized. We present five such measures proposed as being useful in the validation of simulated sea ice displacements. Using drifting buoy and satellite measurements of sea ice motion as observation, we apply the metrics in a comparison of observed displacements and predicted displacements from the Arctic sea ice simulation MPM\_ice. We find the metric scores are useful for comparing simulations and observations. The metrics also brought to light problems in the simulation MPM_ice, demonstrating their …

Asymptotic Quasi-Completeness And Zfc, Mirna Džamonja, Marco Panza 2018 University of East Anglia

Asymptotic Quasi-Completeness And Zfc, Mirna Džamonja, Marco Panza

MPP Published Research

The axioms ZFC of first order set theory are one of the best and most widely accepted, if not perfect, foundations used in mathematics. Just as the axioms of first order Peano Arithmetic, ZFC axioms form a recursively enumerable list of axioms, and are, then, subject to Gödel’s Incompleteness Theorems. Hence, if they are assumed to be consistent, they are necessarily incomplete. This can be witnessed by various concrete statements, including the celebrated Continuum Hypothesis CH. The independence results about the infinite cardinals are so abundant that it often appears that ZFC can basically prove very little about such cardinals. …

About A Non-Standard Interpolation Problem, Daniel Alpay, Alain Yger 2018 Chapman University

About A Non-Standard Interpolation Problem, Daniel Alpay, Alain Yger

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Using algebraic methods, and motivated by the one variable case, we study a multipoint interpolation problem in the setting of several complex variables. The duality realized by the residue generator associated with an underlying Gorenstein algebra, using the Lagrange interpolation polynomial, plays a key role in the arguments.

Cartan Triples, Allan P. Donsig, Adam H. Fuller, David R. Pitts 2018 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Cartan Triples, Allan P. Donsig, Adam H. Fuller, David R. Pitts

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

We introduce the class of Cartan triples as a generalization of the notion of a Car- tan MASA in a von Neumann algebra. We obtain a one-to-one correspondence between Cartan triples and certain Clifford extensions of inverse semigroups. Moreover, there is a spectral theorem describing bimodules in terms of their support sets in the fundamental inverse semigroup and, as a corollary, an extension of Aoi’s theorem to this setting. This context contains that of Fulman’s generalization of Cartan MASAs and we discuss his generalization in an appendix.

Equiangular Tight Frames From Group Divisible Designs, Matthew C. Fickus, John Jasper 2018 Air Force Institute of Technology

Equiangular Tight Frames From Group Divisible Designs, Matthew C. Fickus, John Jasper

Faculty Publications

An equiangular tight frame (ETF) is a type of optimal packing of lines in a real or complex Hilbert space. In the complex case, the existence of an ETF of a given size remains an open problem in many cases. In this paper, we observe that many of the known constructions of ETFs are of one of two types. We further provide a new method for combining a given ETF of one of these two types with an appropriate group divisible design (GDD) in order to produce a larger ETF of the same type. By applying this method to known …

An Integral Triune Model Of Human Consciousness And Its Implications To Cancer Treatment, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache 2018 University of New Mexico

An Integral Triune Model Of Human Consciousness And Its Implications To Cancer Treatment, Victor Christianto, Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

To emphasize what we have outlined in a preceding paper, we consider the following: that human consciousness model should take into consideration “spirit” role, i.e. the mind-body-spirit as integral aspect, which view is neglected in the so-called Freudian mental model. In this paper, we consider two approaches to cancer treatment derived from such an integral triune view of human consciousness, including (a) healing frequency approach as advised by Royal Rife and David Hawkins, and also (b) relational therapy, based on recent research on the healing role of love and compassion.

A Computational Study Of The Role Of Spatial Receptive Field Structure In Processing Natural And Non-Natural Scenes, Victor J. Barranca, G. Zhu 2018 Swarthmore College

A Computational Study Of The Role Of Spatial Receptive Field Structure In Processing Natural And Non-Natural Scenes, Victor J. Barranca, G. Zhu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

The center-surround receptive field structure, ubiquitous in the visual system, is hypothesized to be evolutionarily advantageous in image processing tasks. We address the potential functional benefits and shortcomings of spatial localization and center-surround antagonism in the context of an integrate-and-fire neuronal network model with image-based forcing. Utilizing the sparsity of natural scenes, we derive a compressive-sensing framework for input image reconstruction utilizing evoked neuronal firing rates. We investigate how the accuracy of input encoding depends on the receptive field architecture, and demonstrate that spatial localization in visual stimulus sampling facilitates marked improvements in natural scene processing beyond uniformly-random excitatory connectivity. …

With-In Host Dynamics Of L. Monocytogenes And Thresholds For Distinct Infection Scenarios, Ashrafur Rahman, Daniel Munther, Aamir Fazil, Ben Smith, Jianhong Wu

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The case fatality and illness rates associated with L. monocytogenes continue to pose a serious public health burden despite the significant efforts and control protocol administered by private and public sectors. Due to the advance in surveillance and improvement in detection methodology, the knowledge of sources, transmission routes, growth potential in food process units and storage, effect of pH and temperature are well understood. However, the with-in host growth and transmission mechanisms of L. monocytogenes, particularly within the human host, remain unclear, largely due to the limited access to scientific experimentation on the human population. In order to provide insight …
