Electrochemical Synthesis Of Porous Polyaniline Electrodes Using Hkust-1 As A Template And Their Electrochemical Supercapacitor Property, Qiong Luan, Chun-Feng Xue, Hong-Ye Zhu, Fu-Juan Yang, Xu-Li Ma, Xiao-Gang Hao

Journal of Electrochemistry

Excellent electrode plays vital important role in the performance of supercapacitors. Polyaniline (PANI) with good conductivity is often used to prepare electrode. However, its available surface is limited and results in a poor supercapacitance in many cases. It is desirable to fabricate an electrode containing electroactive PANI with high surface area deriving from its porous structure. Here, the metal-organic framework (MOF) material with high surface area was selected as a hard template for synthesizing porous PANI. Microporous PANI composite electrodes (Micro-PANI/CC) were fabricated by depositing aniline on to carbon cloth (CC) pre-coated with MOF material of HKUST-1 using a unipolar …

Preparations Of Mno2 Reference Electrodes For Corrosion Monitoring Of Reinforced Concrete, Li Yang, Bing Xu, Hai Wang, Ze-Hua Dong

Journal of Electrochemistry

In this work, the solid reference electrode was assemblied by using the electrochemically synthesized manganese dioxide (MnO2) (EMD) powder, gel electrolyte and thin mortar layer for the durability evaluation of concrete. The EMD reference electrode exhibited higher potential stability (< 10 mV drift) than the chemically synthesied MnO2 (CMD) based on half year potential tests in the saturated Ca(OH)2 solution and hardened mortar. In addition, the EMD electrode was almost insensitive to the presences of chloride ion and corrosion inhibitor. Electrochemical impedance and polarization curves indicate that the EMD electrode had lower charge transfer resistance, higher exchange current density and lower temperature coefficient than the …

Aligning Electronic Energy Levels On The Anatase Tio2(101) Surface, Jun-Jie Zhao, Jun Cheng

Journal of Electrochemistry

As one of the most commonly-used materials for photocatalysis and solar energy conversion, titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been extensively studied for more than 40 years. Its photoelectrochemical activity crucially depends on the band positions at the interface. In this work, the valence band maximum (VBM) and conduction band minimum (CBM) of a model TiO2 surface are computed using the standard work function method at the level of Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) density functional, which are then converted to the scale of the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE) by subtracting the absolute SHE potential. Comparing with the rutile TiO2(110) …

Effect Of Pressure On Ion Selectivity In Biomimetic Nanopores With Ph-Tunable Polyelectrolyte Brushes, Hui-Xia Shan, Zhen-Ping Zeng, Li-Xian Ye, Feng Shu

Journal of Electrochemistry

Biomimetic ionic channels of synthetic nanopores functionalized with pH-tunable polyelectrolyte (PE) brushes have significant application potentials for active transport control of ions, fluids, and bioparticles on the nanoscale. Ion selectivity is an important phenomenon of ion transport in nanofluidic devices, which has great theoretical significance and practical values. We propose a pressure control scheme to control the ion selectivity in biomimetic nano-systems with pH-tunable PE brushes. Effects of the solution properties (i.e., pH and background salt concentration), the applied voltage and pressure on ion selectivity are comprehensively investigated. The results show that ion selectivity is sensitive to pressure. Unlike the …

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) have significant environmental and public health impacts. In this study, we demonstrate that EPFRs formed on ZnO nanoparticles provide two significant surprises. First, EPR spectroscopy shows that phenoxy radicals form readily on ZnO nanoparticles at room temperature, yielding EPR signals similar to those previously measured after 250°C exposures. Vibrational spectroscopy supports the conclusion that phenoxy-derived species chemisorb to ZnO nanoparticles under both exposure temperatures. Second, DFT calculations indicate that electrons are transferred from ZnO to the adsorbed organic (oxidizing the Zn), the opposite direction proposed by previous descriptions of EPFR formation on metal oxides.

We describe how the unique temporal and spectral characteristics of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL) can be utilized to follow chemical transformations in heterogeneous catalysis in real time. We highlight the systematic study of CO oxidation on Ru(0001), which we initiate either using a femtosecond pulse from an optical laser or by activating only the oxygen atoms using a THz pulse. We find that CO is promoted into an entropy-controlled precursor state prior to desorbing when the surface is heated in the absence of oxygen, whereas in the presence of oxygen, CO desorbs directly into the gas phase. We monitor the …

Oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOC) by the nitrate radical (NO3) represents one of the important interactions between anthropogenic emissions related to combustion and natural emissions from the biosphere. This interaction has been recognized for more than 3 decades, during which time a large body of research has emerged from laboratory, field, and modeling studies. NO3-BVOC reactions influence air quality, climate and visibility through regional and global budgets for reactive nitrogen (particularly organic nitrates), ozone, and organic aerosol. Despite its long history of research and the significance of this topic in atmospheric chemistry, a number …

We present a new formalism to describe the outgassing of hydrogen initially implanted by the solar wind protons into exposed soils on airless bodies. The formalism applies a statistical mechanics approach similar to that applied recently to molecular adsorption onto activated surfaces. The key element enabling this formalism is the recognition that the interatomic potential between the implanted H and regolith-residing oxides is not of singular value but possess a distribution of trapped energy values at a given temperature, F(U,T). All subsequent derivations of the outward diffusion and H retention rely on the specific properties of this distribution. We …

Reply To ‘On The Bonding In Ligand-Protected Gold Clusters’, Wen Wu Xu, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Yi Gao

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

In the recent Correspondence, Professor Henrik Grönbeck made several comments on the recently developed grand unified model (GUM), in particular using the ligand-protected gold cluster [Au25(SR)18]1− as an example. We noted that the latter cluster can be viewed as belonging to a special group of ligand-protected gold clusters that contain one or several icosahedral Au13 motifs. For this group of clusters, a secondary block Au13(8e) has been identified as a more convenient way to describe their structure anatomy and evolution. Another extension of the GUM is the identification of the new elementary …

We report a combined photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical study of the structural evolution of aluminum cluster anions doped with two gold atoms, Au2Aln– (n = 3−11). Well-resolved photoelectron spectra have been obtained at several photon energies and are used to compare with theoretical calculations to elucidate the structures of the bimetallic clusters. Global minima of the Au2Aln– clusters were searched using the basin-hopping method combined with density functional theory calculations. Vertical detachment energies were computed for the low-lying isomers with the inclusion of spin−orbit effects and were used to generate simulated …

Attosecond Spectroscopy Probing Electron Correlation Dynamics, Alexander Heinecke Winney 2017 Wayne State University

Attosecond Spectroscopy Probing Electron Correlation Dynamics, Alexander Heinecke Winney

Wayne State University Dissertations

Electrons are the driving force behind every chemical reaction. The exchange, ionization, or even relaxation of electrons is behind every bond broken or formed. According to the Bohr model of the atom, it takes an electron 150 as to orbit a proton[6]. With this as a unit time scale for an electron, it is clear that a pulse duration of several femtoseconds will not be sufficient to understanding electron dynamics. Our work demonstrates both technical and scientific achievements that push the boundaries of attosecond dynamics. TDSE studies show that amplification the yield of high harmonic generation (HHG) may be possible …
