The Kinetics And Mechanisms Of Some Fundamental Organic Reactions Of Nitro Compounds, Zhao Li
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In chemistry, kinetics is the study of the rates of chemical reactions. A reaction mechanism describes in detail exactly what takes place at each stage of an overall chemical reaction from reactants to products. The work outlined in this dissertation was carried out in order to find out the true mechanisms of some fundamental organic reactions of nitro compounds by means of a series of novel kinetic techniques and analysis methods.
The target reactions include (1) the proton transfer reactions of nitroalkanes and (2) the aromatic nucleophilic reactions of trinitroarenes, both of which are undeniably among the most elementary and …

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The hydrolysis reaction of parathion (PTH) to produce para-nitrophenolate (pNP) and O,O-diethylthiophosphate (DETP) was examined in a minimally disturbed liquid-liquid biphasic reaction system by proton and phosphorous nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The effect of the micellar cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), on PTH transport, hydrolysis, and system characteristics including reactant-product concentrations, pNP partition coefficients, pNP surface activity, ultraviolet degradation of pNP, oxidation of pNP, and impurities in PTH are reported. Surfactant reaction systems resulted in a 2.5 order of magnitude increase in the amount of PTH transported into the aqueous layer as compared to the control system at 2100 …

Using Two Different Approaches For The Creation Of Poly(3-Hexylthiophene)-Functionalized Siloxane Nanoparticles For Organic-Based Solar Cells, Nicholas A. Wright
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Poly(3-hexylthiophene)-functionalized silsesquioxane nanoparticles were prepared from direct hydrolysis and condensation of P3HT-silane precursor using “grafting from” and “grafting to” methods. The size, shape, and surface morphology of these polymer grafts particles were visualized using transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Their compositions confirmed by FTIR, thermogravimetric analysis and elemental analysis. The XRD analysis revealed the polymer orientation and packing pattern of the nanocomposites, indicating the highly ordered lamella stacks of P3HT polymer chains. The photovoltaic performance of the blends of P3HT-nanohybrid with the C60 derivative PCBM was evaluated upon annealation in different temperatures, ranging from 50°C to 150 °C. …

The Synthesis Of A Homologous Series Of Alkyl Lumazines And Their Application To The Dispersion Of Carbon Nanotubes, William P. Kopcha
Master's Theses
In this thesis, the synthesis of a series of alkyl lumazine surfactants (LCn) is reported. Their application to the dispersion of both CoMoCAT and HiPco single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is examined in detail and the thermal stability and chirality selection properties of dispersions made with these surfactants were compared both between themselves and with an alkyl flavin surfactant (FC12). Lumazine alkyl chain length exhibited some control over the quality and the quantity of SWNTs dispersed. LC10 was deemed most appropriate for comparison with FC12 based on considerations of solubility and nanotube individualization. …

The O-allylphenyl (AP) anomeric moiety was investigated as a new leaving group that can be activated for chemical glycosylation under a variety of conditions, through both direct and remote pathways. Differentiation between the two activation pathways was achieved in a mechanistic study. The orthogonal-type activation of the AP moiety along with common thioglycosides allows for the execution of efficient oligosaccharide assembly.

Quorum sensing (QS) is a process of bacterial communication that regulates the expression of virulence genes in many bacteria. The study of QS, could lead to new treatments for bacterial diseases. Interspecies bacterial communication utilizes the signaling molecule autoinducer-2 (AI-2). The LuxS enzyme converts S-ribosyl-L-homocysteine (SRH) into 4(S),5-dihydroxypentane-2,3-dione (DPD), the precursor of AI-2. LuxS inhibitors could prevent QS by halting conversion of SRH. We have developed an efficient synthesis of SRH from D-ribose and L-homocystine. This procedure provides us with both a supply of SRH for biochemical assays and a foundation for the synthesis of SRH analogs …

Biotransformations of prochiral ketones can be performed using plant cells. The benefits of using plant cells include low cost, environmentally sound procedures compared to conventional chemical processes, and the stereospecific nature of the reaction.1,2 Benzofuran-2-yl methyl ketone was reduced to (- )-benzofuran-2-yl-ethanol after incubation with carrots in water. The reaction was enantioselective in that it produced the S-isomer as indicated by optical activity. Currently, attempts to isolate the carrot enzyme and antimicrobial studies of the (-)-benzofuran-2-yl-ethanol product are underway.

Phytosterols are steroid compounds structurally similar with cholesterol and vary in the nature of carbon side chain. β-Sitosterol is commercially available in preparative amount only as mixtures with other phytosterols. New semipreparative synthesis of pure β-sitosterol and sidechain-modified phytosterols is discussed in this dissertation. This new synthesis is achieved via a temporary masking of the stigmasterol 5,6-alkene as an epoxide. Following performance of the desired modification, the alkene is regenerated through a mild deoxygenation. Preparation of phytosterol esters for cholesterol metabolism study is also discussed in this dissertation.

Chemoselective Oxidation Of 6,13-Bis(Decylthio) Pentacene, Claire Eunhye Cho
Theses and Dissertations
Organic semiconductors present much potential for industrial use because of their possible low cost production, Pentacene and pentacene derivatives are promising candidates for organic semiconductor research since their ^-conjugated electronic structures possess small HOMO- LUMO gaps and high field effect mobility. Whereas there is much potential in devices made from pentacenes they do however undergo short lifetimes and poor processability due to photodegradation and poor solubility of pentacene. Previous research has shown that the pentacene lifetime and solubility can be enhanced by arylthio and alkylthio substituents placed on the pentacene backbone. For example 6,13-i?/s(decylthio)pentacene was one of the longest lived …

Rhodium-Catalyzed Hydroboration Of 1,1-Disubstituted Alkenes, Scott A. Pettibone
Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Enantioselective rhodium-catalyzed hydroboration is becoming an increasingly important asymmetric transformation of alkenes based upon the utility of the organo boranate ester intermediate. The newly acquired asymmetric C-B bond can be converted to C-O, C-N, C-C bonds and the organo borante can be coupled to SP2 hybridized halogen bonds, all with retention of configuration. Catalyzed hydroboration of 1,1-disubstituted alkenes are an especially challenging substrate class for this enantioselective transformation. The difficulty for catalysts to distinguish between the two enantiotopic faces of the olefin is one of the major issues that have to be overcome to achieve a desirable level of enantioselectivity. …

Over the past decades, a variety of pi-conjugated organic materials have been explored as potential charge transport materials in conducting layers of photovoltaic devices. The performance of these devices critically depend on the efficiency with which the charge carriers (electrons and/or holes) move within the pi-conjugated materials present in their hole and electron conducting layers before their collection at the electrode. Hence, a large amount of research effort is devoted not only to the preparation of new pi-conjugated organic molecules for charge transport applications but also in understanding the nature of charge transport along the molecule (intra-chain) as well as …

The unifying theme of most of optoelectronic devices revolves around the charge carrier mobility of the organic materials used in the conductive layers, which is a measure of how easily the electron/hole moves in a particular pi conjugated organic material. When pi conjugated materials are incorporated in these devices, molecules are generally layered in random orientation. Consequently, the efficiency of charge transport in the conducting layers of these devices is governed not only by the intramolecular electron/hole transport through the backbone of the molecule but also by the intermolecular electron/hole transport between the molecules and hence packing of these molecules …
