Our research utilized a modified graphene surface model to simulate capture of carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas based on van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonding. We completed an extensive review of the literature for model and experimental surfaces used to trap carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas into structures and pores with varying functional groups, pore sizes, and pore structures. We replicated the design of selected published models and compared their and our calculated binding energies. Plants secrete peptide ligands and use receptor signaling to respond to stress and control development. Understanding these phenomena is key to improving plant health and productivity for food, fiber, and energy applications. Phytosulfokine (PSK), a sulfated peptide hormone, regulates plant cell division, growth, and stress tolerance via specific phytosulfokine receptors (PSKRs). This study uses fiber-optic fluorescence microscopy to elucidate trafficking of PSK in live plants. Peripherally selective compounds have been found to stimulate endocannabinoid receptor activity, which has been observed to have positive physiological effects such as ocular wound healing and inflammation control. The activation of the cannabinoid 1 receptor via binding of the endogenous ligands, anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol, has been indicated to elicit these effects. Both ligands are controlled by two hydrolase enzymes, fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) and monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL), which can be targeted for therapeutic inhibition. Sulfonamide derivatives of JZL195 containing carbamate functionalities in the southern region of the inhibitor compounds were produced using novel carbamate exchange reactions. To do this, I determined the potential of oyster shell as a bioindicator of cadmium (Cd) in the environment by determining the mode of Cd uptake and relationships between Cd concentrations in the environment, shell, and soft tissues of juvenile eastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica Gmelin). Extended metal atom chains (EMAC) are multimetallic complexes that feature a linear metal chain with metal-metal bonds surrounded by stabilizing ligand molecules. When EMACs are formed with paramagnetic metal ions, unique magnetic properties can be derived from direct metal to metal communication. The challenge is that EMAC complexes are challenging to synthesize due to the inherent weakness of most M-M bonds and the specificity of the ligands required to stabilize EMACs. This Communication describes the Pd-catalyzed C(sp3)-H functionalization of a tropane derivative to generate products with functionalization at two (β/γ) or three (β/γ/β) different sites on the alicyclic amine core. These reactions proceed via an initial dehydrogenation to generate an alkene product that can react further to form a Pd(I) alkene-bridged dimer. Functionalization of this dimer affords β/γ/β-functionalized allylic arylation and allylic acetoxylation products.

Dibenzophospholes are molecules with extended pi conjugation. This project aims to incorporate thiophenes and benzothiophenes into dibenzophosphole systems by using 2-bromothiophene, 2-bromobenzothiophene, and 3-bromobenzothiophene as starting materials. An ethyne intermediate is created via the Sonagashira reaction, which is further reacted to form the novel dibenzophosphole system. The ultimate goal is to fuse the newly incorporated functional groups, creating an even greater degree of conjugation.

Bacteria, though well-known and widespread in scientific application, have plenty more opportunity to grow in the field of organic synthesis. The primary objective of this project was to apply the use of bioluminescent bacteria in an organic photoredox reaction intending to use the bacteria as a renewable source of light. This sustainable method, as opposed to high wattage bulbs, paves a green pathway for organic photocatalytic reactions. Methylation of P-stereogenic phosphiranes Mes*PCH2CH(R) (Mes* = 2,4,6-(t-Bu)3C6H2, R = Me, Ph) with MeOTf gave P-stereogenic phosphiranium cations; [Mes*P(Me)CH2CH(Ph)][OTf] underwent syn-anti isomerization via P-epimerization. Mechanistic studies suggested ring opening gave a hyperconjugation-stabilized carbocation in which pyramidal inversion at P was promoted by s-interaction with the pendant cation. Attempted phosphirane protonation with HOTf resulted in ring opening and C-H activation of an o-t-Bu group to give phospholanium cations. Treatment of [Mes*P(Me)CH2CH(Ph)][OTf] with LiPPh2 gave bis(phosphino)ethanes. Copper- catalyzed P-alkylation of the secondary phosphine PHPh(Mes*) with benzyl bromides gave P-stereogenic tertiary phosphines with a supermesityl substituent.

Cyclophostin and cyclipostins are naturally occurring organophosphates with common structural core units and different phosphate ester substituents. Cyclophostin is a cyclic phosphate triester with a chiral center at phosphorous and C-3a carbon atom while the cyclipostins have characteristic alkyl substituents with varying chain lengths at the phosphate center. Long-chain substituted monocyclic phosphate (2b) and phosphonate (2a) analogs of cyclophostin and cyclipostin are promising inhibitors against serine hydrolases acetylcholinesterase with an IC50 in the nanomolar range.

Systematic computational studies of pericyclic Diels–Alder reactions between (H3C)2C═C(CH3)2, 1, and all permutations of substituted cyclopentadienes c-C5R1R2R3R4R5aR5b (R = H, CH3, CF3, F) allowed isolation of substitutional effects on Gibbs free energy barrier heights and reaction Gibbs free energies. “Average Substitution Gibbs Free Energy Correction” ΔGASC#‡/ΔGASC# values for each substituent in each position appeared to be additive. Substituent effects on barriers showed interesting contrasts. Methyl substitution at positions 5a and 5b increased barriers significantly, while substitution at all other positions had essentially no impact. The physical driving forces for secondary structure preferences of hydrated alanine peptide are investigated with B3LYP-D3(BJ) and the adaptive force matching (AFM) method. The AFM fit to the DFT surface, ALA2022, provides excellent agreement with the nuclear magnetic resonance scalar coupling constants from experiments. In turn, the model is used to gain insight into the physical driving forces behind secondary structure preferences of hydrated peptides. DFT calculations with and without the Conductor-like Screening Model (COSMO) show that the α helix is stabilized by solvent polarization due to dipole cooperativity. Two ways to create rigid versions of flexible models are explored. The rigid model can assume the Model’s Geometry (MG) as if the molecule is not interacting with any other molecules or the ensemble averaged geometry (EG) under a particular thermodynamic condition. Although the MG model is more straightforward to create, it leads to relatively poor performance. The EG model behaves similarly to the corresponding flexible model (the FL model) and, in some cases, agrees even better with experiments.
