This article provides an early analysis of the potential for creating future biosimilar competition for cell and gene therapies (CGTs) to lower prices and improve patient access, building on a unique set of interviews with relevant experts. Our discussion addressed regulatory, manufacturing, intellectual property, and market size challenges. Due to CGTs’ complexity, meeting the regulatory requirement of ‘high similarity with no clinically meaningful differences’ will be difficult. Gene therapies are likely better candidates for biosimilar development than cell therapies. Biosimilarity should be met when gene therapy biosimilars contain the same genetic sequence as a reference product, and the variability in …

Proteomics, the study of complex protein mixtures in which liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is used to analyze peptide sequences, is commonly utilized to study the double membrane, cell-derived vesicles known as exosomes. Exosomes are double membrane, cell-derived vesicles that contain cell components such as DNA, lipids, and proteins. They function to transport proteins and cellular materials between cells and are involved in the progression and metastasis of cancer. The impact of these extracellular vesicles on cancer spread can be analyzed using proteomics, through the purification of the proteins isolated from the vesicles. Background: In the United States (U.S.), falls are the leading cause of injury among adults 65 and over, resulting in 36 million falls yearly (Moreland et al., 2020). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2023), one in four older adults experiences a fall each year. Falls are the world's second most prominent cause of accidental deaths (World Health Organization [WHO], 2021). Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries among older adults (Moreland et al., 2020).

BACKGROUND: Smoking is the largest preventable cause of death and disease in the United States, with ,5% of quit attempts being successful. Microglia activation and proinflammatory neuroimmune signaling in reward neuro- circuitry are implicated in nicotine withdrawal symptomology. Microglia are integral regulators of blood-brain barrier (BBB) functionality as well; however, whether the effects of nicotine withdrawal on microglia function impact BBB integrity is unknown.

Abstract: Approximately 10% of patients with recent percutaneous intervention (PCI) have concomitant atrial fibrillation (AF) and others may have concomitant venous thromboembolism (VTE). This makes choosing the optimal antithrombotic regimen challenging. The ACC published a 2020 decision pathway to guide safe and evidence-based use of antiplatelet and anticoagulant combinations for certain patients. These situations include patients with prior AF on anticoagulation and the need for PCI, patients with new-onset AF requiring anticoagulation in a patient already on antiplatelet therapy for coronary artery disease (CAD), patients with prior VTE on anticoagulation and the need for PCI, and patients with new or …
