Changes In Soil Fertility And Plant Nutrient Contents In Degraded Tropical Pasture After Renovation, M C. Macedo, V.P. B. Euclides

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

A grazing experiment was conducted on an Oxisol testing five degraded tropical grasses renovated with two levels of fertilizer with the objective to study seasonal changes in plant nutrient contents and soil fertility. Total dry matter availability, green and dead matter availabilities, nutrient concentration in leaf tissue and soil fertility were the parameters measured. Availability of forage and leaf nutrients was significantly dependent on seasonal changes with green matter on offer decreasing over years. Soil fertility increased after renovation and declined thereafter. Soil available-P decreased and it was related to sustainability of green matter on offer. Soil organic matter mineralization …

Productivity Of Fodder Beet On Sandy Soil In Egypt, M A. El-Nahrawy, A Z. Abd El-Halim, H S. Oushy

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Farmyard manure effect on the productivity of five fodder beet varieties grown on sandy soil was investigated during three successive seasons. It was revealed from the results that FYM can effectively convert the non-productive sandy soil to a relatively productive soil. FYM application resulted in an increase of 145, 97, 55, 40, 39 and 43% for dry matter. Fresh matter, germination percentage, plant height, root length and root diameter, respectively, averaged over varieties and seasons.

Brachiaria Brizantha Response To Phosphorus Rates In The Nutrient Solution, F A. Monteiro, R A. Martim, W T. Mattos

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Seven phosphorus rates in the nutrient solution were studied in a greenhouse experiment for Brachiaria brizantha (Hochst) Stapf. Plants had 54 days of growth and 49 days of regrowth. Significant responses in forage yield, tiller number and root dry weight were found. Plant tops were divided into four parts and phosphorus concentration in each one significantly changed with phosphorus rates. Sampling of the young leaf blades and analyzing for phosphorus is proposed for diagnostic purposes. A critical phosphorus concentration of 1.2 g kg-1 is suggested as the critical level in the young leaf blades.

Bahiagrass Forage Production And Quality As Effected By Municipal Biosolids, R M. Muchovej, J E. Rechcigl

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Production of biosolids has been increasing consistently in the last few years. Land application of wastes is being regarded as an alternative means of disposal and as a source of inexpensive fertilizer material. Pastures are particularly attractive in this regard since the areas occupied are extensive and large amounts of fertilizer are required for adequate production. The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of various rates of biosolids on bahiagrass yield and quality. Forage samples were collected from each plot from April to December. Significant increases in dry matter production, crude protein content and in vitro digestibility …

An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Steelworks Slag As A Fertilizer For Use On Grassland, A Younger

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The objective of this work was to evaluate the steelworks by-product, steelworks slag, for use on established grassland. The effects of three rates of slag application were compared against those of lime and phosphate applications calculated to be equivalent to those applied in slag. Experiments were conducted at seven grassland sites, differing in initial pH, in the north east of England, and the treatments were evaluated in terms of their effects on both soil pH and herbage production over a three year period. Slag was effective at increasing soil pH at all sites, producing responses similar to those of limestone. …

Nutrient Uptake And Growth Stimulation Of Grasses And Legumes By Rhizosphere Microorganisms, G Hoflich 2024 Centre for Agricultural Landscape and Land Use Research

Nutrient Uptake And Growth Stimulation Of Grasses And Legumes By Rhizosphere Microorganisms, G Hoflich

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Selected Rhizobium bacteria and mycorrhiza fungi by single and combinated inoculation stimulate the growth and the nutrient uptake (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) of alfalfa and alfalfa-grass more than that of red clover and red clover grass. The extra yield was higher on loamy sand than on sandy loam. The proportion of legumes should be 60 to 66 % as a requirement to get positive inoculation effects and an effective N2-fixation in legumegrass- mixtures.

Effects Of Different Phosphate Fertilizers On Pasture Nutrition And Soil Phosphorus In Canterbury, New Zealand, L M. Condron, K M. Goh 2024 Lincoln University

Effects Of Different Phosphate Fertilizers On Pasture Nutrition And Soil Phosphorus In Canterbury, New Zealand, L M. Condron, K M. Goh

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

A field trial was conducted over 6 years to assess the relative performance of three phosphate (P) fertilisers of differing solubility (single superphosphate, ‘longlife’ superphosphate, ‘reactive’ phosphate rock) on a permanent pasture at Methven in Canterbury, New Zealand. Plant P uptake data showed that while the overall relative effectiveness of the fertilisers was closely related to their water-soluble P content (single superphosphate > ‘longlife’ superphosphate > ‘reactive’ phosphate rock), the agronomic efficiency of the sparingly soluble phosphate rock fertiliser improved markedly with time. Soil P analysis demonstrated that significant dissolution of phosphate rock had occurred in the soil, and the findings of …

Field Evaluation Of Soil Acidity Acidity Effects On The Growth Of Annual And Perennial Ryegrasses, N Miles 2024 KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture

Field Evaluation Of Soil Acidity Acidity Effects On The Growth Of Annual And Perennial Ryegrasses, N Miles

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Soil acidity limits pasture establishment and productivity in the moister eastern half of South Africa. Sound lime requirement guidelines based on soil test data are required. In the study reported here, lime responses of annual (Lolium multiflorum) and perennial (Lolium perenne) ryegrasses were evaluated in irrigated field trials located on acidic, highly weathered soils. Annual ryegrass (yield response to lime 27 to 32%) was found to be markedly more tolerant of soil acidity than perennial ryegrass (yield response 68%). Acid saturations of up to 20% had little impact on the yield of annual ryegrass, while yield …

An Integrated Soil Testing-Modeling Approach To Improve Fertilizer Recommendations For Grassland, L Brown, D Scholefield, E C. Jewkes, N Preedy 2024 Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research, North Wyke

An Integrated Soil Testing-Modeling Approach To Improve Fertilizer Recommendations For Grassland, L Brown, D Scholefield, E C. Jewkes, N Preedy

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

New management strategies are required in order to reduce the appreciable emissions of N from intensively managed grassland. Previous work has shown that if fertiliser is applied at rates that take account of the mineral N found in soil at the time of each application, N use efficiency can be improved. A novel approach is described which integrates soil testing and modelling to produce N fertiliser recommendations on a monthly basis. An existing annual model of the N cycle in grassland has been modified to produce monthly predictions of mineral N in the soil. The model is being validated by …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The potential growth in the winter annual forage crops in the Southeast of Buenos Aires Province (Argentina), is limited by the availability of nitrogen during the winter period. The effect of nitrogen fertilization on growth of the two main winter forage crops: oat (Avena sativa) and annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam) was analyzed. Under winter-spring temperatures a higher growth potential was shown by annual ryegrass. The critical N doses were 150 and 100 kg.ha-1 of N for oat and annual ryegrass, respectively. The nitrogen dilution curves and the critical N concentration in the forage were determined. The …

Lucerne Decline: The Role Of Acidification, D J. Koopman, P G. Tow, T G. Reeves

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Paddock surveys and preliminary glasshouse experiments have identified acidification of the surface soil layers as a contributing factor to the problem of declining lucerne yields occurring in the mid north region of South Australia. In a field experiment, lime application at rates of 2 t/ha and 4 t/ha significantly improved the growth of lucerne in a soil with an acidic topsoil and alkaline subsoil. Lime incorporated into the soil had an initial short term advantage of improving lucerne production over lime applied to the soil surface. By the end of the first season there was no benefit of incorporated lime …

Evaluation Of Different Bradyrhizobium Sp Strains On Nitrogen Fixation Capacity In Four Forage Legumes, F O. Gallardo, E S. Lopes, M C. Diez 2024 Universidad de La Frontera

Evaluation Of Different Bradyrhizobium Sp Strains On Nitrogen Fixation Capacity In Four Forage Legumes, F O. Gallardo, E S. Lopes, M C. Diez

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Eleven available strains of Bradyrhizobium sp were used to test four forage legumes, Crotalaria juncea (Crotalaria), Cajanus cajans (Guandu), Styzolobium deeriagianum (Mucuna-Ana) and Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (Guar) for symbiotic N-fixation ability. Greenhouse experiments were conducted for nine weeks in order to evaluate shoot, root, and nodule dry weight, nodule number, and shoot nitrogen content. Four strains presented relative nitrogen efficiency (RNE) over 100% with Crotalaria cultivar, whereas only one strain was more efficient with Guandu and Mucuna cultivars. Strain 633 was the only one which presented a high yield with Crotalaria, Guandu and Mucuna-Ana cultivars.

Use Of Reactive Phosphate Rock For Pastures On The Southern Tablelands Of Nsw, Australia, D L. Garden, P R. Dann, I J. McGowen, C O'Malley 2024 NSW Agriculture

Use Of Reactive Phosphate Rock For Pastures On The Southern Tablelands Of Nsw, Australia, D L. Garden, P R. Dann, I J. Mcgowen, C O'Malley

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

A comparison was made of pasture production from phosphate fertilisers, including superphosphate, reactive phosphate rocks (RPRs) and a non-reactive phosphate rock at two sites on the Southern tablelands of NSW, Australia. Production from all phosphate rocks was low in the first year at both sites, but RPRs were similar to superphosphate by the fourth year. Production from RPRs was low in a dry year which is consistent with the requirement for moist acid soils for effective release of P from RPRs. Performance of RPRs was better at the site which was moister and had higher summer rainfall.

Increased Phosphorus Supply Enhances Water Uptake And Water Use Efficiency In White Clover Under Dry Conditions, D K. Singh, P.W. G. Sale 2024 La Trobe University

Increased Phosphorus Supply Enhances Water Uptake And Water Use Efficiency In White Clover Under Dry Conditions, D K. Singh, P.W. G. Sale

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

A glasshouse experiment was carried out to determine how increasing rates of P supply (0, 33, 100 and 300 kg P ha-1) influenced the water use efficiency of white clover grown in a P-deficient soil under dry conditions. Increasing the P supply enhanced both shoot dry matter yield and water use by the clover plants. The relatively greater dry matter response meant that water use efficiency also increased with added P. High rates of water extraction by these high-P clover plants resulted in a marked drying of soil. Despite these dry soil conditions there was no adverse effect on growth …
