Onset of menstruation (i.e., menarche) is a determining event of the adolescent female signifying the progress of puberty, which in the majotity of cases is visibly initiated with thelarche (onset of breast development or breast buds). Menarche usually occurs during the earlier time of the second decade of life and ends with menopause, typically in the 5th decade of life. The adolescent can present with a wide variety of menstrual dilemmas and disorders which will be discussed in this chapter.

During the 1960s and 1990s, the California Department of Fish and Game tagged 8,634 barred sand bass in southern California, and 972 fish (11%) were recaptured. Tag returns suggest barred sand bass are transient aggregate spawners that form spawning aggregations consisting of both resident and migrant individuals. Spawning residency at a historic spawning location was estimated by the frequency of returns over time; most same-year returns (82%, n  =  141) were recaptured within a 7 to 35-day period. The maximum recapture distance was 92 km. The average (± SD) non-spawning season recapture distance from peak spawning season tagging locations was …

Background: Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) channels are important membrane sensors on peripheral nerve endings and on supportive non-neuronal synoviocytes in the knee joint. TRPV 1 ion channels respond with activation of calcium and sodium fluxes to pH, thermal, chemical, osmotic, mechanical and other stimuli abundant in inflamed joints. In the present study, the kaolin/carrageenan (k/c) induced knee joint arthritis model in rats, as well as primary and clonal human synoviocyte cultures were used to understand the reciprocal interactions between reactive nitroxidative species (ROS) and functional TRPV1 channels. ROS generation was monitored with ROS sensitive dyes using live cell …

The Impact Of Mitochondria On Preimplantation Development In The Rhesus Macaque, Tiffini Charieace Gibson 2010 Wayne State University

The Impact Of Mitochondria On Preimplantation Development In The Rhesus Macaque, Tiffini Charieace Gibson

Wayne State University Dissertations

Assisted Reproduction Technologies (ART) have been used to treat infertility since 1790. In the centuries following, dramatic advances have been made in the field of infertility research through the employment of a variety of species. Despite these advances, determination of oocyte and embryo quality remains largely subjective. Ascertainment of methods to measure oocyte and embryo quality to improve selection in ART clinics and increase pregnancy success rates is imperative. These methods are only possible with a more comprehensive understanding of the cellular and molecular properties of oocytes and preimplantation embryos. A key component of all cells, including oocytes and embryos, …

Camkii-Mediated Phosphorylation Of The Inositol 1,4,5-Trisphosphate Receptor At Serine-150 Results In Decreased Channel Activity, Joshua Thomas Maxwell 2010 Loyola University Chicago

Camkii-Mediated Phosphorylation Of The Inositol 1,4,5-Trisphosphate Receptor At Serine-150 Results In Decreased Channel Activity, Joshua Thomas Maxwell

Dissertations

One mechanism by which calcium is mobilized from intracellular stores is via the activation of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptors (InsP3Rs) by the second messenger, inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP3). InsP3 is produced when certain factors bind to G protein-coupled receptors on the plasma membrane, causing activation of phospholipase C which cleaves InsP3 from its membrane tether, allowing InsP3 to diffuse through the cytoplasm to bind to its receptor. Activation of InsP3Rs leads to release of calcium into the cytoplasm of the cell, where it can activate a multitude of signal transduction cascades and a variety of local and global cellular events. One such …

Interplay Between Keratin And Vimentin Expression In Oral Cancer, Mary Catherine McGinn 2010 Virginia Commonwealth University

Interplay Between Keratin And Vimentin Expression In Oral Cancer, Mary Catherine Mcginn

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research in our laboratory found that inhibiting expression of vimentin, a marker of epithelial-to mesenchymal transition, inhibited cell growth and motility in vitro and in vivo. Tumors derived from vimentin knockdown cells showed features of epithelial redifferentiation and increased expression of differentiation-specific keratins. It is unknown what causes re-expression of keratins when vimentin is inhibited. Although, canonical Wnt signaling may activate NF-κB and repress of keratin and/or induce vimentin expression through β-catenin. We hypothesize that downregulation of differentiation-specific keratins contributes to tumor progression, mediated directly or indirectly by expression of vimentin. Vimentin-negative HN4 cells were transfected with plasmids encoding …

Periodontal Bacterial-Dna Initiated Immuno-Inflammatory Responses In Human Osteoblastic Cells, Chebel Najib Bou 2010 Virginia Commonwealth University

Periodontal Bacterial-Dna Initiated Immuno-Inflammatory Responses In Human Osteoblastic Cells, Chebel Najib Bou

Theses and Dissertations

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease initiated by gram negative anaerobic bacteria. These bacteria possess pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) that interact with various receptors including Toll like receptors (TLRs). Bacterial DNA (bDNA) is one of the PAMPs mainly recognized by TLR9. Interaction of bDNA and its receptors leads to activation of inflammatory signaling pathways potentially resulting in periodontal bone destruction. The aim of this study was to determine the production of IL- 6 and IL-8 in response to periodontal bDNA from human osteoblastic cells (MG-63). MG- 63 cells were stimulated in duplicate for 20 hours with 100ng/μl of bDNA from …

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is a remarkable tool for assessing the structural properties of supported lipid planar bilayers under different physiological conditions. Previous work has shown that incorporation of anesthetics into artificial lipid bilayers results in domain formation [1], destruction of lipid aggregates and patches [2], anesthetic-lipid mixed micelle formation [2], and the development of interdigitated phases of reduced thickness compared to anesthetic-free bilayers [3]. In particular, these interdigitated phases are suspected to affect the structure and activity of membrane proteins, such as ion channels, and thus further research with proteinembedded bilayers exposed to anesthetics could reveal the mechanism responsible …
