The housing construction industry has always been looked on as one of the key indicators of the American economy. When the economy was soaring, the housing industry often saw favorable conditions. In the past several years, however, it has not seen the best of times. New residential starts, both locally and nationally, appear to be headed for a 1981 total that falls far below the levels of only a few years ago.

In the spring of 1980, the Nebraska Mortgage Finance Fund (NMFF) through the issuance of bonds made 150 million dollars available to be used by first-time low and moderate income home buyers. This money was to provide these buyers an opportunity to purchase "sanitary, safe, and uncrowded" dwellings.

Trouble In River City: An Analysis Of An Urban Vice Probe, Joseph S. Uris

This dissertation is an historical case study of a highly publicized investigation of vice and official corruption which took place in Portland, Oregon from 1954 to 1958. Three major relevant areas of social science literature are reviewed. These are: historical material on American reform and corruption, criminology and political science. This literature suggests both the ubiquity and usefulness of vice and corruption in the urban situation.

A set of propositions regarding vice, corruption and reform was developed from these works. These propositions were then examined in terms of the vice probe and political situation in Portland, Oregon.

This issue of the Review examines those demographic trends for Omaha and Douglas County. With 311,681 people in 1980, Omaha included nearly one-fifth (19.9 percent) of Nebraska's 1,5 70,006 people. Population Changes In Omaha/Council Bluffs Ymca Branch Office Areas, Rebecca S. Fahrlander

This report examines changes in the population of the six YMCA branch areas in Omaha and Council Bluffs between 1970 and 1980, as well as changes in the racial/ethnic composition of the areas. For the purposes of this report, an area of one mile radius surrounding each Omaha office and the Council Bluffs office was studied. All census tracts falling within the one mile radius were included. The locations of the Omaha branch areas are shown in Map 1. The purpose of this study was to measure empirically the extent to which FHA and VA discount points are passed on to residential buyers in Omaha, Nebraska, and to compare the results with previous studies in Columbus, Ohio, and Lubbock, Texas.

The Center for Applied Urban Research at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (CAUR) was contacted in the summer of 1980 by the Legal Aid Society of Omaha about the possibilities of obtaining assistance with a research project. In an initial letter, the director of Le·gal Aid stated the purpose of the proposed project:

Our goal in conducting the survey is to obtain as much information as possible to determine the most pressing problems facing poor people in our community.

In addition to providing poisoning treatment facilities, they play a vital role in providing information to individuals and health professionals for treating poisoning victims. Entry Level Manpower Needs In The Omaha Metropolitan Area, Vincent J. Webb, Michael Eskey

The majo1· purpose of this study was to develop a data base of projected employment in the Omaha SMSA. The study sought to reveal short-term occupational projections of Omaha employers. Reported growth, decline, and turnover in selected occupations were the key factors considered, and data were also gathered on the educational, training, and experience requirements of employers for entry level positions in occupations studied. This study should meet the needs of administrators, planners, and counselors for information on occupational trends so that they can engage in effective manpower training.

Educational And Career Aspirations Of Fremont High School Students, Murray Frost

The purpose of this report is to analyze the educational and career aspiration data from a survey of more than 1,000 Fremont High School students. The survey was administered in spring, 1980 and was part of a study on the needs and impact of Metropolitan Technical Community College in Omaha. Both this report and the larger study were conducted by the Center for Applied Urban Research of the University of Nebraska at Omaha. The survey questionnaire and frequency distributions of the responses are included in the Appendix of this report.

Older Americans make up an increasingly significant part of the total United States population.¹ Older citizens comprised about 11 percent of the national population, and numbered approximately 24 million in 1978.² More importantly, older Americans have increased as a proportion of the total population and have increased in number by 23 percent between 1970 and 1980.³ In Nebraska, an estimated 13 percent of the population are "elderly," and only a few other states, mostly in the …

The Center for Applied Urban Research continued to fulfill its mission of applied research, community service and training during 1980-81. Two major events that took place during the past year have greatly strengthened the ability of CAUR to carry out this mission. In October, CAUR moved into new quarters at the Peter Kiewit Conference Center at 1313 Farnam on the Mall in downtown Omaha. With just over 7,000 square feet of space, CAUR has been able to carry out project activity in a more efficient manner. The purpose of this workshop is to increase your perception of how children speak to us and we speak to them through the language of behavior. Discussion will focus on causes and sources of misbehavior, expression of feelings and emotions and degrees of disciplinary action and intervention. Case studies will be utilized enabling you to make observations of motivation, development and relationships with peers and adults. Emphasis will be placed on aiding a child to gain self-control, responsibility and independence through reasonable guidelines.

The Center for Applied Urban Research provides professional services in applied research, training, and community service. Primarily these services are provided to state provided and local governmental units in Nebraska, though some activities may be national or international in scope. To a lesser extent, services are provided to private groups and agencies. CAUR, a unit within the College of Public Affairs and Community Service at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, was initially established in 1963 as the Urban Studies Center at the Municipal University of Omaha.

The original report on which this article is based resulted from research conducted by CAUR for the Nebraska Mexican American Commission with funding from the Nebraska Commission on Aging. Dr. DiMartino and Carole M. Davis were co-investigators for the project and co-authored the lengthier report. The cooperation and assistance provided by so many members of the Hispanic communities in Lincoln, Omaha, and Scottsbluff made the study possible.

The handouts, which immediately follow the instructor's guide, are mechanisms to reinforce the knowledge and to provide opportunities for participants to practice some of the procedures. The handouts are designed to be permanent reference materials for the participants.
