During the past few years, real estate markets have . undergone many adjustments. High interest rates, inflation, and competition for investment capital necessitated major changes. On a national level, the subject of housing sales has received considerable commentary. The ability of sellers in Omaha to exchange their units has probably been curtailed as well. This study attempts to examine real estate listings within the Omaha/Douglas County Multiple Listing Service areas (see Map 1) and describe some of the changes.

For the first time since the Great Depression, local governments throughout the United States have begun to experience severe revenue-expenditure imbalances. Inflation, rising expectations, and citizen demands for services have produced governmental intervention into heretofore untouched areas. Combined with the generally decreasing rate of local revenue growth and with reductions in federal and state aid, this has produced serious fiscal problems for many local governments. With resources no longer available to provide prior levels of public services, many local governments have had to cut back on their activities.

In 1972 the Goodrich Amendment to the state appropriation for the University of Nebraska at Omaha gave the University an "unparalleled opportunity" to develop further its educational offerings and services to students from low-income backgrounds. The intent of the amendment was to make funds available "for a program to get economically deprived young people in and through UNO." The demographic composition, especially the age structure of criminal justice faculty, is of interest to students in criminal justice education for a number of reasons. First, an overall assessment provides some gauge of the relative age of the faculty in the field. Second, observations of changes in the composition of the age structure over time provide insight into the aging process and attendant developmental process of the field itself. The 1980 Census of Population and Housing provides a data base that administrators and planners can use to assess the current status of their organizations and plan for the future. This report examines selected census data for the Omaha YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association). 1 The demographic information should assist the YMCA in planning for program offerings at each of its six facilities (or branches) in Douglas and Pottawattamie Counties.

The major findings of this study on the economic impact of the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1980-81 are the following:

1. The Total expenditure (excluding double counting) within the Omaha SMSA by the university, its faculty/staff, students, and visitors was $62.3 million.

2. The increase in the Omaha SMSA activity caused by the university was estimated as $56.1 million.

3. A total of $62.3 million of additional income attributable to alumni having college degrees was not included in these estimates of the university's economic impact.

The relationship existing between population change and crime rates in the central city merits study. There is limited research in this area, and the vast majority of the literature focuses on the correlation between population density and crime in the Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (SMSA). These few studies explore various types of crime in relation to population density, rather than the investigation of the relationship between population change and crime rates in the central city.
