Honors Theses

For approximately the past twenty years, the United States (US) government has focused on combating terrorist threats from abroad like Islamic terrorism. However, in recent years, terrorism has transitioned from an external threat to an internal threat. Despite this newly gained knowledge, the threat of white supremacy terror in the US has been growing for years. This study looked at the ways foreign governments have combatted white supremacist terrorism, recruitment, and …

An Inferentially Robust Look At Two Competing Explanations For The Surge In Unauthorized Migration From Central America, Nick Santos May 2021

An Inferentially Robust Look At Two Competing Explanations For The Surge In Unauthorized Migration From Central America, Nick Santos

Dissertations

The last 8 years have seen a dramatic increase in the flow of Central American apprehensions by the U.S. Border Patrol. Explanations for this surge in apprehensions have been split between two leading hypotheses. Most academic scholars, immigrant advocates, progressive media outlets, and human rights organizations identify poverty and violence (the Poverty and Violence Hypothesis) in Central America as the primary triggers responsible. In contrast, while most government officials, conservative think tanks, and the agencies that work in the immigration and border enforcement realm admit poverty and violence may underlie some decisions to migrate, they instead blame lax U.S. immigration …

Transnational Organized Crime, Terrorist Financing And Boko Haram Insurgency In Nigeria, Waziri Adisa

Journal of Terrorism Studies

Terror attacks on the African continent have continued to impose significant costs on the people, particularly in the West African sub-region where Boko Haram and the Islamic State in the West African Province have remained active for the last decade. While the security threat that the Boko Haram insurgency poses to the West African sub-region has been well established in the literature, there is a dearth of studies on the role of transnational organized crime and terrorist financing in the wake of the sects’ activities in the sub-region. This article therefore argues that Boko Haram and ISIS in Nigeria have …

Transformation Of Ex-Hti Propaganda Before And During Covid-19 Pandemic, Ali Al Ghazali May 2021

Transformation Of Ex-Hti Propaganda Before And During Covid-19 Pandemic, Ali Al Ghazali

Journal of Terrorism Studies

Since it’s dissolution in 2017, HTI ex-members transformed into multiple communities and utilizing internet to conduct propaganda, recruitment, and coordination. Covid-19 pandemic created new opportunity for spread of radicalism because of economic recession and increased poverty. HTI ex-members continue the struggle through underbouw organizations like GEMA Pembebasan, BacktoMuslimIdentity Community (BMI), and MuslimahNewsId. Rise in internet usage during pandemic helps expose people to HTI khilafah propaganda. Uploaded contents are provocative and targeting mainly millennials and women. This increased the potential of sectarian conflict and proliferation of radical islamist movement in the coming years. Government could tackle this by providing Islamic education …

Implementasi Resosialisasi Oleh Densus 88 Anti Teror, Andi Nova, Muhamad Syauqillah

Journal of Terrorism Studies

The Indonesian government takes two distinct approaches to terrorism cases: a soft approach and a hard approach. One of the approaches that has been successful is deradicalization, which is expected to be the most effective method of combating terrorism. The Detachment 88 Task Force is a special unit of the Indonesian National Police tasked with investigating terrorism-related crimes. Officers from Special Detachment 88 deal directly with perpetrators, witnesses, and families affected by terrorism crimes. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of resocialization as the final stage of deradicalization. Resocialization is the stage which the terrorism inmates …

Revisiting The Deradicalization In Indonesia: A Proposal For Better Implementation, Stanislaus Riyanta, Amy Ys Rahayu, Benny J. Mamoto

Journal of Terrorism Studies

Terrorism has been one of the most concerning issues in Indonesia since it has penetrated all layers of society, including families and even police officers. Interestingly, some of the terrorist attacks have been launched by the ex-convicts of terrorism and this finding indicates that the deradicalization program, as one of the ways for mitigating the massive wave of terrorism, turns out to be ineffective. If this situation is not given proper attention, then in both the near and the far future it can be predicted that terrorism will be a recurrent theme of issues in the state. Therefore, there should …

Model Pendanaan Terorisme Melalui Media Cryptocurrency, Adhitya Yuda Prasetya, Athor Subroto, Amanah Nurish

Journal of Terrorism Studies

Globalization encourages technological progress so that its development is utilized by terrorist organizations in expanding their movements. Terrorist organizations utilize digital financial transaction technology, namely cryptocurrency, as part of their funding activities. This condition is influenced by the shift in traditional funding methods that have begun to switch to digital media, so the emergence of cryptocurrencies has a great opportunity in terrorism financing activities globally. Over the past few years there has been a phenomenon of using cryptocurrencies by terrorist groups for funding purposes. This research article wants to explain how terrorist organizations use cryptocurrency as a new medium in …

The Relationships Between Stress, Psychosocial Resources, And Mental Health And Adherence Outcomes Among Perinatally Hiv-Infected Adolescents In South Africa, Thabani Nyoni

Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Adolescents living with perinatally acquired HIV (APHs) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) constitute a significant population group that is experiencing poor HIV treatment outcomes (CIPHER Global Cohort Collaboration, 2018). Compared to younger children and older adults within the SSA sub-region, APHs experience poorer health outcomes, including retention in care, virologic treatment failure, and mortality rates (Anderson et al., 2019). Among countries in the SSA sub-region, South Africa has 360,000 adolescents living with HIV (ages 10-19), a disproportionate burden, accounting for 20% of the global adolescents living with HIV (UNAIDS, 2019a). The public health costs of suboptimal antiretroviral treatment (ART) adherence in …

The Phenomenon Of Sexual Violence During Armed Conflicts In The Twenty-First Century: Entering The Era Of Survivors As Agents Of Peace, Shayna Kushner May 2021

The Phenomenon Of Sexual Violence During Armed Conflicts In The Twenty-First Century: Entering The Era Of Survivors As Agents Of Peace, Shayna Kushner

International Relations Honors Papers

Evidence suggests the twenty-first century has witnessed a surge in armed conflicts and ethnic wars targeting marginalized communities, subjecting innocent civilians to violence and destruction. Among the tactics aimed to disrupt family and social ties within the existing communities, some armed groups and government sponsored soldiers have subjected vulnerable individuals to wartime rape and conflict-related sexual violence including physical and mental abuse. While the international community attempts to intervene militarily and judicially to quell the sexual violence, institutions and individual actors fall short of providing justice and accountability to survivors and victims of conflict-related sexual violence. Through the case studies …

(1) Background: In resource-limited countries, patients with tuberculosis (TB)/HIV coinfection commonly face economic, sociocultural, and behavioral barriers to effective treatment. These barriers manifest from low treatment literacy, poverty, gender inequality, malnutrition, societal stigmas regarding HIV, and an absence of available care. It is critical for intervention programs to understand and assist in overcoming these barriers and any additional risks encountered by patients with TB/HIV coinfection. This study analyzes variation in TB/HIV coinfection and risks of negative outcomes among patients with TB/HIV coinfection compared to those without coinfection. (2) Methods: This quantitative study used data from 49,460 patients receiving ART from …

The Long Road Towards Racial Reconciliation, Lia Cueto Jerez May 2021

The Long Road Towards Racial Reconciliation, Lia Cueto Jerez

Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024

The issue of race in the United States has been long contested among different social and political spheres. Over the course of the 20th and 21st century, Americans have been eyewitnesses to the long and evolving fight for racial justice and equality. Most recently, the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020 has proven to contest people’s attitudes over the issue. As political polarization grows, mistrust within communities of color deepens, further hindering participation in bipartisan work to overcome these differences.

The New Space Policy Regime And Its Financial Foundation, Tamara Campbell May 2021

The New Space Policy Regime And Its Financial Foundation, Tamara Campbell

Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024

Post the global financial crisis of 2008, the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) sought to expand the space economy through a public policy of commercialization. This has brought major changes to the composition of space mission funding strategies, now repositioned as public private partnerships (P3s). Formed to fund space missions with private finance in lieu of public funding, P3s are investment and risk-sharing vehicles evaluated by financial intermediary institutions, insurers, and at times, the courts in the case where there is foreign direct investment (FDI) agreement. For this reason, it is arguable P3s have exceptional influence on the scope …

Progressives, The Covid Pandemic, And The Laboratories Of Democracy: Is The Left Saying “Goodbye” To Cooperative Federalism?, William R. Bowen

Helm's School of Government Conference - 2021-2024

Events surrounding the COVID pandemic draw into question the progressive commitment to cooperative federalism. This is evidenced by their espousing the virtues of the tenth amendment, “states rights,” and ample use of the expression the “laboratories of democracy.” These references signal a possible move toward a view of federalism that champions state innovation and initiative irrespective of direction from Washington. This paper will explore the apparent retreat of progressives from their commitments to cooperative federalism, specifically, whether these references signal a tactical shift for short-term political gains or a more fundamental shift in progressive ideology.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, a partisan divide has existed over the appropriate government response to the public health crisis. Democrats have been more likely to favor stricter policies such as prolonged economic shutdowns, limits on gathering in groups and mask mandates. Republicans overall have favored less stringent policies.

In the past decade, terrorist attacks in Africa have increased in frequency and lethality. Cutting off funding to terrorist groups is one important way to reduce these attacks. This research focuses on Boko Haram in Nigeria and al-Shabaab in Somalia. A historical overview of terrorist financing and a current outlook of the methods used by both groups are followed by a review of the literature on countering the financing of terrorism (CFT). This provides a lens through which specific government responses to financing terrorism in Nigeria and Somalia are examined. The research found that although Nigeria has made strides toward …
