Title Change Characteristics Of Academic And Nonacademic Serials, Mavis B. Molto
Title Change Characteristics Of Academic And Nonacademic Serials, Mavis B. Molto
Library Faculty & Staff Publications
The study compared the characteristics of academic and nonacademic serials with title changes, from which it was determined that the two serial subpopulations were similar in the six broad reasons found for a title change but differed in the kinds and proportions of subject and function changes that occurred when a title changed. On the basis of the findings, two alternate RDA rule revision proposals are made (labeled Ideal versus Practical), the first requiring a new access point for a title change only when a significant subject or function change has occurred, and the second requiring a new access point …

Introducing Institutional Repositories In University And Institutional Libraries Of India For Open Access, Kishor Chandra Satpathy, Manoj Kumar Sinha
Book Chapters
There is a growing interest among academic institutions in collecting, preserving, and creating value-added services from digital content produced in teaching and research. Institutional repositories” is a new concept for collecting, managing, disseminating, and preserving scholarly works created in digital form by faculty and students in individual universities and colleges. It is born out of problems with the current scholarly communication model structured by commercial journal publishers and vendors. To properly implement these repositories, libraries will need to recruit librarians who possess digital collection management and Open Archive Information System (OAIS) management skills. In addition, training faculty and students to …

Status Of University Libraries In India Till 2004: A Critical Study, Kishor Chandra Satpathy, Manoj Kumar Sinha
Book Chapters
The concept of the library has been changed tremendously along with the change of time and space. This change is brought due to the result of space and wave research. The scientific innovations compel the overhaul change in the system of the library and of information science and of its service. The twenty-first century is the century of knowledge and the library is the center for gathering, distribution, protection, and utilization of knowledge. At the very beginning of the twenty-first century, we see evidence of several movements and innovations, which reflects a significant, break from past activity in libraries. The …

The advent of the affordable and accessible Internet in our society, especially in the urban areas, has changed the way our students can diversify their knowledge input today. Gone are the days when the students have to depend solely on ‘lectures’ delivered by their teachers in college. With wireless broadband, hotspots, cyber cafes, cloud computing, and the ‘free laptops’ around, it is essential for the students (and teachers) to posit the available online video lectures along with the classroom lecturers, prescribed syllabus and curricula in a holistic higher education approach. A cursory look at the various resources available on the …

Alma/Primo Management In A Post-Migration World, Julene L. Jones, Catherine Seago
Ex Libris Bluegrass Users Group Newsletter
While on Voyager, the University of Kentucky had a committee dedicated to handling releases and policies for the system. During our migration to Alma and Primo we moved to taskforces to manage the migration, putting that committee on hold. Post-migration, we revived the ILS Committee and updated the charge to handle Alma/Primo releases and policies. This presentation will briefly discuss the procedures we’re using to manage Alma and Primo releases, training, set policies, and communicate with library staff post-migration. We’d like to leave time for audience participation to find out how others are managing these processes at their institutions.

The International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP), also known as the Petrucci Music Library, is a crowdsourced database of public domain music scores. Driven by a belief that “music should be something that is easily accessible to everyone,” the site was created in 2006 with a goal of creating an exhaustive collection of music scores that are not under copyright. Today, over 390,000 scores are freely available to download from IMSLP, representing approximately 119,000 works by over 15,000 composers.

A 1997 circular letter from the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Patrimony of the Church said that “In the mind of the Church, archives are places of memory of the Christian community and storehouses of culture for the new evangelization.”1 This is true of the archives and libraries of all denominations; they are the repositories of a church’s history and thus a vital resource for understanding a church’s future. As such, it is essential that the official repositories of an organized religion, such as Catholic diocesan archives, be accessible to scholarly researchers, genealogists, members of the faith, and other …

A Novel Application: Using Mobile Technology To Connect Physical And Virtual Reference Collections, Hailie D. Posey
Library Faculty and Staff papers
This chapter describes an innovative implementation of the use of iPad kiosks to blur the lines between physical and virtual library collections. Providence College’s Phillips Memorial Library + Commons began lending iPads to students, faculty, and staff in 2012. In addition to lending the devices, library staff dedicated time to learning about both task-based and subject-based mobile applications that would be of use to our community. A small group of library staff tested, discussed, and vetted a variety of apps that would be deployed on the iPads to be lent out. Efforts were made to promote the use and discovery …

Emily Millicent Sowerby was born in Beverley, East Yorkshire, England on September 7, 1883. She received several degrees through Girton College, Cambridge, focusing on medieval and modern languages. A rare book cataloguer, Sowerby worked for several firms in London before moving to the U.S. in 1923 to continue her career. In 1942 Sowerby was appointed the bibliographer for the Thomas Jefferson Collection at the Library of Congress. There she prepared a reconstructed catalogue of the books that Thomas Jefferson sold to the United States in 1815 that had largely been lost due to fire and relocation. The collection is five …

We Are All Teachers: A Collaborative Approach To Digital Collection Development, Melanie Shell-Weiss, Annie Benefiel, Kimberly Mckee
Scholarship and Professional Work
In libraries and archives, efforts to document underrepresented communities and diversify collections can be fraught with political tension. We explore an interdepartmental collaboration to create and preserve a digital collection documenting the Urban Native Relocation Program of the mid- to late-twentieth century in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Involving the Grand Valley State University Libraries, the Kutsche Office of Local History, and the university’s Native American Advisory Board, the project serves as a model not just for collaborative collection development but also for community engagement and outreach. We find that process is as important as product in developing collaborative digital collections.

Career Plateauing Among Senior Librarians., Tina M. Neville, Deborah B. Henry
USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications
Using an online survey and semi-structured interviews, senior academic librarians were asked to reflect on the factors that keep them personally fulfilled and on how they remain motivated to make positive contributions to their organization. Motivations include esteem of colleagues and supervisors, variety in their work, salary, opportunities to learn new skills, increasing responsibility, and working with students and faculty. 59% percent of the survey respondents ranked their job satisfaction at 8 (on a scale of 1—10, with 10 the most satisfied). Using Bardwick’s definitions of plateauing, 60% of the 20 librarians interviewed did not feel that they were content-plateaued.
