Objective Student research habits and expectations continue to quickly change due to technological advances, complicating the design of library spaces and the provision of research support. This study’s intent was to explore undergraduate and graduate student research and study needs at a private university in the Northeastern United States, and to improve librarians’ understandings of these practices so that more appropriate services and spaces may be developed to support student learning. Methods The research project utilized a mixed-methods design for data collection that spanned from fall 2012 to summer 2013, consisting of a survey, observations, and interviews. Data collection commenced …

Reimagining The Library: Designing Library Spaces To Meet The Needs Of Today's Students, Kathleen T. Baril, Kelly Kobiela
Heterick Faculty Scholarship
Libraries, long the heart of academic life, nonetheless have been perceived as a passive space for physical resources and quiet study. Changes in the dissemination of information, as well as teaching and learning methods that focus on high-impact practices, have driven library staff to reimagine the physical buildings of libraries. To meet the new needs of students, Ohio Northern University planned a full renovation of the first floor of its undergraduate library. Current space and space usage was analyzed, considering how collaborative learning and undergraduate research might be conducted in renovated spaces. Ethnographic studies such as observations, focus groups, and …
Helpful Tips For Marking Corrections On Your Zea Books Proof Pages, Linnea Fredrickson
Helpful Tips For Marking Corrections On Your Zea Books Proof Pages, Linnea Fredrickson
About Zea E-Books
- Write your corrections directly on the proof pages. (Making changes back in your original manuscript file, for example, is not helpful because that stage has gone by.)
- Write in a bright color of ink that will be easily distinguishable from black type. Red is great; so is green.
- Form your letters and punctuation marks neatly to help ensure your corrections will be accurately read and correctly made. If you know you have a “hasty hand,” try pretending that you are about eight years old and writing each letter for a grade in penmanship class, or even that you’re teaching alphabet …

Visualization Of Library Databases, Xue-Ming Bao
Digital Humanities
This project will explore the best ways of visualizing 350 library databases to improve library instruction. "What does a library database include?" is one of the important questions to answer in a library instruction class. It is a persistent challenge to introduce library databases to students in an engaging, interesting, and meaningful way. Most library databases contain bibliographic information such as the names of authors, book and article titles, journal names, year of publication, reference citations, keywords, abstracts, full-text and so on. Any of these fields can be visualized to provide a better understanding of database content.

Characteristics Of Multi-Institutional Health Sciences Education Research: A Systematic Review, Jocelyn Schiller, Gary L. Dallaghan, Terry Kind, Heather Mclauchlan, Joseph Gigante, Sherilyn Smith
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
Objectives: Multi-institutional research increases the generalizability of research findings. However, little is known about characteristics of collaborations across institutions in health sciences education research. Using a systematic review process, the authors describe characteristics of published, peer-reviewed multi-institutional health sciences education research to inform educators who are considering such projects.
Methods: Two medical librarians searched MEDLINE, the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), EMBASE, and CINAHL databases for English-language studies published between 2004 and 2013 using keyword terms related to multi-institutional systems and health sciences education. Teams of two authors reviewed each study and resolved coding discrepancies through consensus. Collected data points …

Complicated Catalog - Teaching Students To Use One Search, Jennifer A. W. Joe
Ex Libris Bluegrass Users Group Newsletter
A frequently heard complaint about One Search from the user experience end is that it is "complicated" or "over-whelming," but it has its positive points, too. The key is in teaching patrons who may have never had any experience outside of Google and traditional OPACs how to use it. This presentation covers best practices on how to teach One Search to new users in a thoughtful, less stressful manner using the very tools inherent in the discovery system - and how the thought and practice of teaching searches in One Search differs from the traditional OPAC.

Library Resources for Campus Events
A bibliography of resources available through the Holy Cross Libraries which provide additional information related to “Crusades and Crusaders,” a lecture by Kevin Madigan '82, held at the College of the Holy Cross on March 23, 2017.
Professor Madigan explains what the Crusades were and explores how Crusaders viewed themselves as pilgrims on an armed expedition undertaken for Christ, authorized by the Pope, who were given full remission of their sins. He also traces the historiography of the Crusades in the 19th and 20th centuries to lay context for decision of the Holy Cross student body in 1925 to adopt …

Creating A More Accessible Environment For Our Users With Disabilities: Responding To An Office For Civil Rights Complaint, Donna E. Mccrea
Mansfield Library Faculty Publications
In 2012, a University of Montana student advocacy organization filed a complaint with the US Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights stating that unequal access to the university’s electronic and information technologies (EIT) resulted in discrimination against students with disabilities. This article shares ways in which the University of Montana, including its archives and special collections, responded to the resulting mandate that “employees must create, obtain, and maintain all EIT in a manner that ensures it is accessible to individuals with disabilities.” The author argues that a professional and ethical commitment to diversity, access, and use compels archivists and …
