From Print To Pixels: Preserving Alabama’S Historic Newspapers Through Digitization, David Ferrara, Melissa Young

This article presents a case study of the Alabama Digital Newspaper Project (ALDNP), a grant-funded initiative to digitize Alabama’s historic newspapers. It outlines the establishment and history of ALDNP, including its accomplishments, and the challenges faced and overcome by University of Alabama Libraries Special Collections (UALSC) staff. This case study details ALDNP’s workflows, including title selection, metadata creation, technical standards, and microfilm digitization. This article also highlights outreach efforts, including collaborations with regional archives, student workers, and community educators. In addition to providing details on the accomplishments of ALDNP, it also outlines potential areas for growth and expansion. Detailing a …

Serials cataloging can be confusing with its unique properties. This session will discuss some of the challenges involved in cataloging serials including choosing a title, what to do if you do not have the first issue or an early issue of the serial, determining the dates of serials, frequency changes and cataloging serials in languages that are unfamiliar to the cataloger.

In the present knowledge era, the library is considered an important center and is the heart of any academic institute. A successful organization is one whose users are satisfied from the provided facilities. In this study, the researcher studies the user satisfaction from library resources and services at Government Degree College Sabir Abad (Karak) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. A survey method was used. The researchers personally visited the population site and distributed 155 questionnaires to the respondents of which 135 were responded to and received (87% response rate). This study aims to evaluate world top daily newspaper websites selected from newspaperland.com, a web directory of world newspapers, magazines, news sites, and newspaper publishers (https://www.newspapersland.com/). The Jewish Chronicle (JC), a weekly newspaper based in London, England, offers free access to the text and video content on its website and subscription-based access to its full-text archive, which dates back to its founding in 1841. The search interface and the OCR underlying the page scans can be problematic at times, but this is nonetheless a valuable resource; over 175 years’ worth of material on Jewish history and the larger social culture will be of interest to scholars in a variety of fields.

In this poster, I discuss how the Catholic Research Resources Alliance (CRRA) approached issues of copyright, licensing and terms of use for the Catholic News Archive. Implemented in summer 2016, the Archive provides online access to a full text, aggregated digital collection Catholic newspapers and is the only collection like it in existence. Our goal is to have a digital collection as openly accessible as possible, licensed under a Creative Commons license in concert with the interests of libraries, archives, publishers, scholars, funding agencies and other stakeholders. Over fifty years ago an historian and a library director traveled the back roads of Kentucky (USA) with a portable microfilm camera, two lights, and a dream of preserving Kentucky’s newspapers. From their ambitions arose a successful newspaper preservation program at the University of Kentucky Libraries (UKL). Now in its sixth decade, the program has developed a new way of preserving contemporary born-digital newspapers. "Developing an Image-Based Classifier for Detecting Poetic Content in Historic Newspaper Collections" details and analyzes the first stage of work of the Image Analysis for Archival Discovery project team. Our team is is investigating the use of image analysis to identify poetic content in historic newspapers. The project seeks both to augment the study of literary history by drawing attention to the magnitude of poetry published in newspapers and by making the poetry more readily available for study, as well as to advance work on the use of digital images in facilitating discovery in digital libraries and other digitized collections. …

Libraries are working toward collaborative management and preservation of print journals, newspapers, legal materials, and government documents; they must also establish a similar concerted effort focused on print monographs. The Joseph M. Bruccoli Great War Collection at the University of South Carolina was established in 1997 by Matthew J. and Arlyn Bruccoli and named for Professor Bruccoli's father. It is an expansive research archive for the literary, historical, and cultural aspects of World War I from the vantages of many of the combatant nations, holding more than 4,000 items, including 3,400 print materials comprising military training manuals, illustrated wartime magazines, trench newspapers, novels and poetry of the war, letters, diaries, postcards, scrapbooks, photo albums, and glass slides.
