Dropped In Without A Parachute: Library Managers’ Supervision Experiences, Simon Funge, Audrey Robinson-Nkongola, Laura Delancey, Austin G. Griffiths

Social Work Faculty Publications

A survey of U.S. library managers explored the relationship between their social identities, experiences supervising others, support from others, and their overall satisfaction in their professional role. The literature provides evidence that demographic differences give rise to challenges in the workplace. Though no statistically significant differences were found between minority and nonminority managers related to supervisees' microaggressive behaviors, written commentary provided evidence of these and other supervision challenges. A regression analysis found that supervisees' behaviors, along with a manager's age, were significant predictors of their satisfaction as a supervisor. Recommendations for further research and implications for libraries emerge from these …

Metadata And Copyright: Should Institutions License Their Data About Scholarship?, Krista L. Cox Aug 2017

Metadata And Copyright: Should Institutions License Their Data About Scholarship?, Krista L. Cox

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Institutions have a number of options for how to treat metadata while encouraging widespread use and sharing. Some institutions may determine that no license is necessary to openly share metadata, taking the position that the metadata they produce is not copyrightable. Others might share it using a CC0 license or CC0 with additional guidelines. In determining how to share metadata, institutions should consider possible cross-border implications as well as the potential that what is defined as metadata could grow in breadth and raise additional copyright concerns. Additionally, institutions should take into account the benefit that clear and easy-to-understand policies provide …

Using Fair Use To Preserve And Share Disappearing Government Information, William Cross Aug 2017

Using Fair Use To Preserve And Share Disappearing Government Information, William Cross

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

Access to government information is a fundamental principle in a democratic society. Particularly in the digital environment, government information is a driver for economic and social progress as well as a predicate for an informed citizenry. From 2009 through 2016, open government was a hallmark of the Obama administration, which observed that, “openness in government strengthens our democracy, promotes the delivery of efficient and effective services to the public, and contributes to economic growth.” Libraries and archives have historically served as stewards of government documents, and in recent years, these institutions have paid special attention to the unique vulnerability of …

Opening Up Our Collections: One Ill Department's Journey In Providing More Access To Our Patrons And Yours, Alicia Marrese, Kourtney Blackburn

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

Lavery Library at St. John Fisher College previously had policies that did not allow us to lend textbooks or DVDs to other libraries and prohibited our patrons from borrowing textbooks. However, an increased desire to stop saying "no" to ILL requests led us to revisit those policies. We looked at our reasons for not lending or borrowing these items and wondered: did these policies actually help our patrons and adhere to ILL best practices?

We decided that our policies were not in our patrons' best interests; nor were they in the best interests of the ILL community. In the past …
