This presentation will begin with a refresh of the initial stages of a multi-year project which aims to strengthen individual libraries' collections as well as regional collections through the use of resource sharing data. With rich resource sharing data (such as the number of times a title was requested within IDS Project, regional holdings, and more) staff in acquisitions and resource sharing can collaborate to build strong, diverse collections without even having to learn ILLiad. A university's special collections is often a featured stop on campus tours, whether for visiting dignitaries, prospective students, or guest lecturers. This poster presentation highlights successful planning that has allowed a special collections without dedicated classrooms or galleries to utilize limited exhibit spaces in the reading room for rotating and long-term exhibits that align with library-wide initiatives while also focusing student and visitor attention on curatorial strengths, cross-disciplinary opportunities, emerging research trends, and hidden collections.

Game On: Teaching Research Methods To College Students Using Kahoot!, Maria Atilano

This poster will demonstrate how to use Kahoot!, a free game-based learning platform, to make research methods an interactive teaching experience. Instead of lecture-based, mid-semester recap covering topics such as source evaluation, keyword refinement, and database searching, Kahoot! helps transform a class from boring to exciting. Attendees will learn how to design their Kahoot! as well as create buy-in with students.

Communicating Effectively In Rapidly Changing Times, Anne Marie Casey

Publications

This paper investigates communication in academic libraries that experienced rapid changes during the Great Recession and its aftermath. The investigator conducted a multi-case study, in which she interviewed library and university participants in three U.S. academic libraries in 2010. Results show that effective communication existed for the most part in the three libraries, all of which were maintaining strategic priorities while experiencing dramatic changes.

Founded and directed by activist Carole Pope (1944-2013), Our New Beginnings was a non-profit residential transitional and alternative sentencing program for women navigating corrections and criminal justice in Portland, Oregon that operated from 1980 to 1992. During this time, the program served over 3,000 women and their children at a non-recidivism rate of 84%. Through Our New Beginnings, Pope also worked with the Portia Project and Project Link-Up, two Oregon non-profit programs dedicated to connecting women in prison with legal and custodial support and services.

Professional Development Programmes For Polytechnic Library Staff In Ghana: Challenges And Prospects, Micheal Owusu-Acheaw

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The study assessed professional development programmes available for Polytechnic Library staff in Ghana, and examined their prospects and challenges. The survey method was employed and quantitative approach was adopted for the study which involved only professional Library and para-professional staff of the Polytechnics in Ghana. Out of 80 copies of questionnaire sent out, 72 were retrieved representing a response rate of 90%. The study revealed that most of the staff were aware of the term “professional development”. They also confirmed that knowledge they acquired through professional development had also improved on their work performance considerably. Again, the study showed that …

This lightning talk will describe recent activity surrounding SHARE—an open dataset supported by the Association of Research Libraries and the Center for Open Science. SHARE is working to aggregate metadata found in institutional and disciplinary repositories in order to improve discovery and access to scholarly research. This presentation will cover how to register a repository with SHARE, and will summarize projects recently undertaken as part of the SHARE Curation Associates program of 2016-2017.

The Dream Of Harvesting Is Alive In Portland: Harvesting Through Digital Commons, Ann Connolly

This summer bepress began its first foray into the world of harvesting content. We have access to more than 160 million objects from sources including PubMed, Elsevier’s ScienceDirect, Springer, IEEE, ArXiv, SSRN, RePEc, JSTOR, and many others. In early June we embarked on a pilot with several schools to harvest metadata for new faculty profiles within the Expert Gallery Suite, with plans to expand the scope of the feature over the coming year.

• Plans for release and future improvements

This lightning talk would discuss our efforts to make it easier to identify authors and retrieve a full list of works in the repository. We rely on existing identifiers and standards resulting in no added costs and no new identifier systems. We are currently adding ISNI, VIAF, Library of Congress, and Institutional identifiers for each faculty member (where available). We have also added an indexed field in our Digital Commons instance to allow searching by those identifiers. The system can easily accommodate new identifiers and allows filtering that is not normally available in the Digital Commons search methods.

Integrating Docusign Into The Permissions Workflow, Amy D. Coughenour

This lightning talk will review the process of integrating the use of DocuSign for electronic signatures into the overall permissions workflow for institutional repositories. Subtopics include creating and using templates, routing to collection administrators and program managers, adjusting settings, prefilling forms, and processing the completed forms for the IR. Using an electronic process for permission forms saves time while increasing communication with creators and stakeholders.

SHERPA/RoMEO provides IR managers with publishers’ copyright information, making the deposit of faculty research articles fairly straightforward. But what about all the other materials we’re now putting in the IR? Things like:

• Digitized university collections

Needs assessments can help librarians gain a better understanding of the scholarly communication practices and opinions of faculty within their communities, but they can also provide additional benefits. In the fall of 2016, two librarians at an R2 institution that had just started a scholarly communications program led a qualitative study of 18 faculty members at their institution in which liaison librarians conducted interviews with faculty in their departments. Smaller institutions may not have full-time dedicated positions to provide technical support and campus engagement for their IR, therefore alternative strategies to grow a program supporting institutional scholarship may be necessary. For example, at Trinity University we do not have a Scholarly Communication Librarian or a dedicated IR Manager, but instead, depend on the collaboration of liaisons and technical services staff to engage and support institutional scholarship.

In 2011, cIRcle, the University of British Columbia’s open access digital repository, formally accepted a decentralized repository staffing model following a full day planning retreat with key Library stakeholders. Six years later staff has grown to include two FTE Digital Repository Librarians, one FTE support staff, as well as secured metadata review commitments from a Librarian and two cataloguers in Technical Services in addition to regular deposit support from student employees. Using Chat Metadata To Learn About Our Users, Vera Lux, Linda Rich

The adoption of a proactive, popup chat service prompted an analysis of chat metadata and transcripts to gain a better understanding of our chat users for future decision-making. We analyzed the library pages from where chats initiated, examined chat transcript topics, and identified locations via IP addresses. Through this we learned more about our chat users and where they are most likely to encounter difficulties and seek assistance.
