Nasig Core Competencies For Scholarly Communication Librarians, Andrew Wesolek, Wm. Joseph Thomas, Angela Dresselhaus, Julie Fielding, Char Simser, Sarah Sutton, Jason Boczar, Rachel Miles, Stephanie Spratt, Wendy Robertson, Betsy Appleton

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

The following Core Competencies for Scholarly Communication Librarians were developed out of research and discussion conducted by the NASIG Scholarly Communication Core Competencies Task Force. Scholarly communication is defined by ACRL as “the system through which research and other scholarly writings are created, evaluated for quality, disseminated to the scholarly community, and preserved for future use. The system includes both formal means of communication, such as publication in peer-reviewed journals, and informal channels, such as electronic listservs (Association of College & Research Libraries, “Principles and Strategies for the Reform of Scholarly Communication 1,” 2003). Reaching Additional Users With Proactive Chat, Linda Rich, Vera J. Lux Aug 2017

Reaching Additional Users With Proactive Chat, Linda Rich, Vera J. Lux

University Libraries Faculty Publications

Despite a general decline in recent years in academic libraries’ reference desk statistics, research indicates that library users continue to have complex research questions but are largely unaware that librarians are waiting and ready to assist them. The challenge for librarians is to connect with users at their point of need. At Bowling Green State University, we are making a move in this direction with proactive (pop-up) chat widgets embedded within our library Web pages, catalog, and databases. Since implementation, the number of chat reference questions received has more than doubled, helping us reach additional users from on-and off-campus.

Barriers To Oer Adoption (And Possible Solutions), Amanda Hovious Aug 2017

Barriers To Oer Adoption (And Possible Solutions), Amanda Hovious

Texas Conference on Institutional Repositories

Type of presentation: Full Session

ABSTRACT

In 2012, at the World Open Educational Resources Congress in Paris, UNESCO declared that governments within their powers should develop strategies and policies that promote open educational resources (OER) as an avenue toward the universal right of equity of access to education. Though OER has increased exponentially in availability since that time, there remain confounding factors that act as barriers to OER adoption, such as ease of discovery, ease of adaptability and re-use, and uncertainty regarding quality and sustainability. Numerous studies have examined these barriers, and these studies should be of concern to librarians …

Deciphering Signatures For Improved Discoverability Of Etds, Stacey Wolf, Kevin Yanowski Aug 2017

Deciphering Signatures For Improved Discoverability Of Etds, Stacey Wolf, Kevin Yanowski

Texas Conference on Institutional Repositories

Ever look at a signature and realize you can’t read the name, even though the letters look almost legible? Now imagine there is not a printed name near that signature. Multiply this issue by 2-4 names per item in a collection of thousands. The University of North Texas Libraries recently ran into this problem when adding metadata to recently-digitized theses and dissertations (ETDs) from the 1930s to 1990s. Deciphering the signatures proved difficult and time-consuming because centralized employee rosters do not exist for every year spanning the scope of the ETDs. Without these rosters, the UNT Library catalogers could not …

We Need To Talk: Educating Internal Stakeholders On Repository Needs, James Williamson, Felicia Williamson Aug 2017

We Need To Talk: Educating Internal Stakeholders On Repository Needs, James Williamson, Felicia Williamson

Texas Conference on Institutional Repositories

In creating, managing, and adapting digital collections, managers often face hurdles of technical misunderstanding and sometimes, intimidation. By educating internal stakeholders and creating allies, information managers can facilitate institutional change and are much more able to request and receive funding to pursue innovative programs requiring technical infrastructure.

Felicia Williamson, Archivist at the Dallas Holocaust Museum, will discuss the ongoing efforts to build a more robust technical infrastructure at a small non-profit Museum. Former efforts did not employ metadata standards. Moreover, online access to collections seemed a far off goal. Two main needs emerged: to create and maintain robust metadata and …

A Pilot "Big Data" Education Modular Curriculum For Engineering Graduate Education: Development And Implmentation, Megan R. Sapp Nelson, Line C. Pouchard

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Engineering higher education increasingly produces data in the volume, variety, velocity, and need for veracity such that the output of the research is considered “Big Data”. While engineering faculty members do conceive of and direct the research producing this data, there may be gaps in faculty members’ knowledge in training graduate and undergraduate research assistants in the management of Big Data. The project described herein details the development of a Big Data education module for a group of graduate researchers and undergraduate research assistants in Electrical and Computer Engineering. This project has the following objectives: to document and describe current …

A Brief Introduction, Kayla Morrow Aug 2017

A Brief Introduction, Kayla Morrow

Blogging the Library

I’m a 2017 graduate of a small liberal-arts college named Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. I double majored in English and Philosophy and was fortunate to have two archival internships at the Mount during my senior year. I had never considered a career in archival science before this point—in fact, I don’t think I knew what archival science even was—but I fell in love with my work at the Mount’s library. Nearing graduation, I decided that I wanted to pursue either a general MLIS or a library science degree with a specialization. But, as I soon realized, picking …

You Have One Hour: Developing A Standardized Library Orientation And Evaluating Student Learning, Elizabeth Brown Aug 2017

You Have One Hour: Developing A Standardized Library Orientation And Evaluating Student Learning, Elizabeth Brown

Library Scholarship

Library orientations continue to excite, or plague, instruction librarians everywhere. Reaching first year students early can preempt academic heartache and research woes, yet the question of “what students really need” continues to evolve. This article presents a case study of a large-scale implementation of library orientations. The main issue addressed in this article involves a systematic review of students’ post-instruction responses and assessment of their learning. Related elements mentioned in this article include: interdepartmental participation; curriculum design; and instructional technology. While this implementation may not be appropriate for all academic libraries, its components may offer ideas for augmenting existing programs …
