Library Faculty & Staff Publications
Points of contact formulate the culture of any organization and shape the perceptions of decision makers and colleagues alike. This research project investigated the interactions between Cataloging and Metadata Services staff and other library employees by analyzing interactions. This article summarizes the results of data gathered from interaction assessments and compares them with surveys about the current perceptions of the cataloging unit at the Utah State University Libraries. It discusses the ways these results have influenced existing unit workflows to enhance awareness of cataloging and metadata contributions to the library and posits possible ways to continue such initiatives moving forward.

INTRODUCTION The popularity of academic social networks like ResearchGate and Academia.edu indicates that scholars want to share their work, yet for universities with open access (OA) policies, these sites may be competing with institutional repositories (IRs) for content. This article seeks to reveal researcher practices, attitudes, and motivations around uploading their work to ResearchGate and complying with an institutional OA Policy through a study of faculty at the University of Rhode Island (URI). METHODS We conducted a population study to examine the participation by 558 full-time URI faculty members in the OA Policy and ResearchGate followed by a survey of …

This study aimed at identifying the information needs, information resources, information assets, examining the information flow and information policies. The descriptive survey design was adopted. Purposive sampling technique was used. Triangulation method was used for data collection which comprises observation, document analysis, and questionnaire.
The analysis identified the School has 34 information resource entities, 5 information services, and 4 information systems. It was revealed that majority in the School, AOCOED did need information for their teaching, research and administrative purposes. The School depends on the College mission and vision statements which led to gaps and inconsistencies in meeting its objectives. …

Diffusion Of Big Data In Indian Scientific Literature: Study Of Research Productivity And Scientific Collaboration, Punit Kumar Singh, Ajay P. Singh Prof.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Purpose: Big data, a buzzword of the present time, is a term used for extremly large data sets generated from the digital process which is not possible to analyze by traditional methods. These data sets are produced by digital devices such as smart phones, remote sensing, camera, microphones, RFID etc. The literature on big data is growing exponentially since 2011. Big data is tending to establish as a very important research field. This paper aims to explore the evolution, growth and scientific collaboration of the Indian publications in the field of big data.

ABSTRACT
This study attempted reviewing the roles of school libraries in learning activities of senior secondary school students in Ondo State. Ondo State is divided into three senatorial districts where two Local Governments were selected from each of the senatorial district and two secondary schools taken from each of the selected Local Government. Descriptive survey was adopted to carry out the research and a structured questionnaire was administered to collect data from the respondents while a high response rate of 100% was obtained. The validity of the research was determined by ensuring that the questionnaire reflects basic topics in the …

Taking Stock: Organizing Open Access Operations Based On Researcher Practices, Andrea A. Wirth
Library Faculty Research
In 2017, the members of the Scholarly Communication Initiatives (SCI) Department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) developed a strategic goal for the department to “create organizational shift” at UNLV in regard to improving campus-wide knowledge of and support for open access (OA). One method by which to work toward this multi-year goal was to gain additional insight about UNLV faculty members’ support of OA by assessing their participation in OA publishing and repositories. Through direct conversations with faculty, information gleaned through liaison librarians, and questions about the IR and related services, it was clear there was already …

Failure As Process: Interrogating Disaster, Loss, And Recovery In Digital Preservation, Carly Dearborn, Sam Meister
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
Disaster, loss, and failure preoccupy the minds of many digital preservation professionals and yet, despite the prominence of digital disaster planning guidelines which seem to anticipate failure, there is limited discussion of experience with preservation system or network failures, which are often framed as inevitable in digital preservation. Despite this framing, negative perceptions of failure influence the digital preservation discourse by associating failure with poor planning, unreliability, and untrustworthiness on the part of institutions. This article will interrogate the issue of failure within the digital preservation field and consider the need for more conversations around network failure and recovery. The …

Creating A Culture Of Research Reputation Through Research Information Management Systems, Scott Warren, Anne E. Rauh
Librarian Publications
Research institutions have increasingly strong needs to manage the reputations of their research portfolios. From primary investigators, to awarded grants, scholarly output and related media mention, universities need to be able to retrieve and integrate information about their research endeavors in order to successfully showcase impact at an institutional level. However, all too often this information is siloed and not easily discoverable, retrievable, or reusable. Syracuse University Libraries traditionally provide research reputation services to individual researchers, but recently collaborated with the Office of Research to expand this work in a systematic, scalable manner throughout the university via a pilot implementation …

Influence Of Computer Literacy Skill On On-Line Cataloguing By Librarians In Ekiti State University, Nigeria, Olawale Bamidele, Mr, Samuel Olufemi Olusegun
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The introduction of computers into cataloguing marked a turning point in the way it is being done; this has changed and expanded the work of cataloguers tremendously. The application of the internet is essentially to fast-track that process and ensures that books and other resources spend the least period of time in the cataloguing section. Cataloguers that have internet access have now recognised the potentials of online catalogue for improving subject access to information. It is in the light of this that this research work focuses on the influence of subject background and computer literacy skills on on-line cataloguing by …

In this study, trainee solicitors have been selected for the purpose of investigation. Trainee solicitors are working under a training contract, the final stage of the process of qualification as a solicitor. The trainees are therefore ideal participants for research of this nature as they are by the very nature of their training contracts, learners, and through an exploration of the work that they are given to undertake this research can explore how the trainees develop their knowledge and how their information behaviour contributes to that learning. To this and a constructivist approach to inquiry was adopted untilising a narrative …

Research Models, Primo [Psu Library Catalog], And The First Year Experience, Kimberly Willson-St. Clair
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
Research can be daunting for freshman who are challenged to gather scholarly information beyond Google for their research projects. Applying and blending two research models, ASE (Analyze, Search, Evaluate) with BEAM (Background, Exhibit, Argument, and Method), students can think critically about their topics and strategically search PRIMO for relevant results. This approach addresses several ACRL Framework threshold concepts, especially research as strategic exploration and scholarship as conversation. In this presentation, I will show how effective Primo can be for first year experience students especially in regards to discovering keywords, understanding and organizing citations, finding relevant scholarly resources, and discovering other …

Partners In Mission: A Critical Examination Of The Library As A Locus For Social Justice, Jennifer Nutefall, Jackie Kremer
Staff publications, research, and presentations
The mission of Jesuit education to promote social justice is clear. Yet, when we look at the work of our Jesuit institutions’ academic libraries do we see a clear directive to support social justice initiatives? Our research explores with a critical lens the impact academic libraries have, on their own and in collaboration with campus partners, in promoting social justice at their institutions.
