Designing Effective Legal Research Rubrics: The Foundation For Successful Assessment, Carol A. Watson, Katie Hanschke, Zanada Joyner Apr 2018

Designing Effective Legal Research Rubrics: The Foundation For Successful Assessment, Carol A. Watson, Katie Hanschke, Zanada Joyner

Presentations

Increasingly librarians are teaching many, if not all, of the legal research courses at their law schools. Most librarians are not experts in education assessment design. Assessment with rubrics creates a learner centric environments in which instructors objectively evaluate student progress and assures that students receive consistent and meaningful feedback. Rubrics provide both students and instructors with a clear understanding of whether learning outcomes have been achieved. Guided by the instructors' experience and an in-depth review of the literature law librarians will be exposed to the best practices when creating rubrics including alignment with the course goals and instructor expectations.

Lgbtq+ Children’S Picture Books In Ontario Public Libraries, Ashleigh Yates-Mackay, Danielle Bettridge, Alissa Droog, Alyssa Martin

FIMULAW

Diverse representation in picture books is important for the wellbeing of children and families; this includes LGBTQ+ representation, a frequently contested area of literature. Our poster identifies 33 of the most frequently recommended picture books with LGBTQ+ representations and reports on their inclusion in 40 selected Ontario Public Libraries. We then compared these results with five socioeconomic factors for each library: size of population served, the size of the print collection, the size of the materials budget, the average total median household income and the last decade of provincial election results for the riding in which the main branch of …

Embracing Expanded Librarian Roles In Scholarly Communications, Ngoc-Yen Tran, Emily K. Chan

Faculty and Staff Publications

Scholars have many different ways of promoting and sharing their work in the current information landscape. In addition to the traditional modes of research and scholarly dissemination, faculty can develop their professional online personas and identities and build social and digital communities to promote their thoughts, ideas, and achievements. For faculty who are new to academia and/or seeking efficiencies in managing and leveraging tools to maximize their online scholarly impact, this brave new world of social media can be incredibly daunting and complex. Librarians are uniquely poised to assist. Librarians serve the entire campus community and have the reputation for …

Staff publications, research, and presentations

Have you designed, implemented, and assessed the success of an outreach and marketing program to encourage faculty deposits to your Institutional Repository? In the first year of our program, we were able to increase faculty participation in one academic department from 13% to 31%, and in another academic department from 33% to 60%! We will show you how our team of librarians and library staff rose to the challenge of engaging departmental faculty colleagues in Open Access through participation in the IR. For every plan we attempted to implement, there was a pivot we had to make in order to …

More Product, Less Process: Adequate Metadata?, Nadia Nasr Apr 2018

More Product, Less Process: Adequate Metadata?, Nadia Nasr

Staff publications, research, and presentations

Employing More Product, Less Process (MPLP) approaches we are making archival collections more readily available to our researchers. As we digitize our collections we extend the accessibility of these collections through 24/7 virtual access, enhancing collection, series, and folder level descriptions from finding aids with the item level metadata that accompanies the digital surrogates. But are we creating our metadata as efficiently as possible, and with enough of the original context that exists in our finding aids? Or is there some room for improvement? In my presentation, I plan to explore how our finding aid data is or could be …

The Changing Landscape Of Digitization And Preservation, Sharon Bradley Apr 2018

The Changing Landscape Of Digitization And Preservation, Sharon Bradley

Presentations

Digitization and the preservation of digitized materials presents many complex legal questions, like ownership, copyright, and conflicting laws. Digital materials may be subject to many levels of legal restrictions like copying, storage, access, and modification of content. The speaker will probably confuse things even more by talking about some issues that are coming over the hill including legally enforceable duties of stewardship, loss of academic scholarship and legal authority, and arguments against strict enforcement of copyright law. It’s also time to move from collaborations, because they’re good idea, to legally established partnerships, because they have teeth.

Integrating Circulated Technology Into The Library Collection Development Plan, Neil Ordinario Apr 2018

Integrating Circulated Technology Into The Library Collection Development Plan, Neil Ordinario

Faculty and Staff Publications

Academic libraries are increasingly focused on the acquisition and expansion of circulating technology collections. These collections are often governed by auxiliary library services such as Access Services or IT departments and not considered as part of the general collection. Technology purchases are typically made with one-time-use funds and replacement is an ad-hoc process depending on budget availability. Users are rarely consulted regarding new purchases and systematic analysis of usage is lacking. As laptops, tablets and other technologies become integral to a library’s circulated resources, they need to be integrated as part of the regular collection and included in the library’s …

Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications

Sometimes the newest voices are the ones we want to hear. New librarians start their first library jobs with valuable original ideas—but how do we listen to them and bring their voices into the conversation? Panelists will share their experiences as new librarians, in newly created Distance Librarian positions. Come share your voice, and ask us questions about our challenges, success, and failures. Don’t just listen to new librarians talk. Come with your ideas, so we can discuss how new and experienced librarians can build a community. This is a session for both new and experienced librarians.

The Anchor, Volume 131.21: April 11, 2018, Hope College

The Anchor: 2018

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Boai 15 Survey Report, Nick Shockey, Heather Joseph, Melissa Hagemann Apr 2018

Boai 15 Survey Report, Nick Shockey, Heather Joseph, Melissa Hagemann

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

The 15th anniversary of the Budapest Open Access Initiative provided an excellent opportunity to take stock of global progress toward open access and to gauge the main obstacles still remaining to the widespread adoption of open access policies and practices. As part of this process, feedback was solicited through an open survey that was disseminated online, and that received responses from individuals in 60 countries around the world.

Markers of progress are clear. The lack of understanding of the concept of open access and a myriad of misconceptions that were pervasive at the time of the BOAI’s original convening have …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The violent crises between Fulani herdsmen and sedentary farmers in Nigeria do not constitute an alien phenomenon in Nigeria; it is a phenomenon that has been in existence for decades which have resulted in the extensive loss of lives and property. The constant crises have threatened the security of the State, reduced its economic productivity, and deepened food crisis in Nigeria. While there have been several clashes between the Fulani herdsmen and the farming communities for more than two decades, the escalation reached another level in 2014 with the Fulani herdsmen killing 1,229 people in comparison with 63 deaths in …

What Our Students Want In And From Their Library, Veronica Wells, Robin Imhof, Debbie Johnston

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Presentations

University of the Pacific’s Stockton Campus Library is currently in the process of a multi-phase renovation that will offer 21st century design and functionality. Our team conducted several assessment methods to understand more fully how our students use –or choose not to use—study spaces and various pieces of furniture in the Stockton library. The results of this project will help answer the questions: “What do our students want or need in library learning spaces – both academic and social?” and “How might we create learning spaces in the library that will enable a variety of student use preferences?” We have …
