Librarian Posters and Presentations
Librarians at the University of North Dakota (UND) are implementing scholarly communication initiatives in partnership with faculty and other campus groups to bring about a greater awareness and understanding of related topics, including: open access, open educational resources, researcher IDs and communities, metrics and altmetrics, journal quality indicators, data management, copyright and author’s rights, and publishing strategies. At UND, there is a campus-wide effort for colleges to identify the top high quality journals in their fields or disciplines, and to track faculty scholarly publishing/research outputs for heightened research visibility and impact. Introduction: The CHLA/ABSC Special Committee on Research undertook this project to identify potential ways in which the Association could support its members in undertaking research. The goal was to inform future CHLA/ABSC research-related service and program offerings. A literature review revealed limited publication related to health librarians' research needs. Method: The Committee developed and distributed an online survey to CHLA/ABSC’s membership. The questions related to demographics, previous research engagement or experience, current research support, work-related research requirements and expectations, barriers and enablers for conducting research, desired research support (topic and format) from CHLA/ABSC, and types of programs that would benefit …

Scholarship As An Open Conversation: Using Open Peer Review In Library Instruction, Emily Ford
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
This article explores the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy’s frame, Scholarship as a Conversation. This frame asserts that information literate students have the disposition, skills, and knowledge to recognize and participate in disciplinary scholarly conversations. By investigating the peer-review process as part of scholarly conversations, this article provides a brief literature review on peer review in information literacy instruction, and argues that by using open peer review (OPR) models for teaching, library workers can allow students to gain a deeper understanding of scholarly conversations. OPR affords students the ability to begin dismantling the systemic oppression that blinded peer review and …

Plugged In: Identifying Open (& Subscribed) Access, Aaron Tay
Research Collection Library
Scholars have unprecedented access to subscription and open access (OA) content, yet figuring out how to discover and access legitimate versions of articles remains an aggravating experience for many researchers. They face authentication hoops, myriad vendor platforms with uncertain holdings, and mystifying an obscure OA source. Researchers that start with Google Scholar may bypass library authentication and face paywalls. Conversely, library discovery tools fail to expose and deliver much of the available OA content, and especially under-represent Green OA from repositories. Our panel discusses several approaches to improving access discovery by giving scholars tools to identify accessible content and using …

The Privileged Link: Open Access, Version Of Record, Or Let The User Decide?, Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, Aaron Tay, Maria Aghazarian, Johan Tilstra
Research Collection Library
As the availability of open access (OA) copies continues to grow, platforms and libraries are increasingly facing the possibility of linking users to version of record copies as well as to OA but non-version of record copies of the same article. Some advocate prioritizing linking to OA copies while others argue that the version of record should be prioritized. In many cases, this is a question of whether to link to a copy that the library has licensed over the copies that are freely available; however, the same conundrum can occur with respect to publisher-hosted OA content vs. copies available …
Winning Combination For Collaboration On Plagiarism: Smu Libraries And Student Council Of Discipline (Scd), Mei Tan
Research Collection Library
Plagiarism in higher education is a reality that will not go away any time soon. In Singapore Management University (SMU) Libraries, we observed that there had been an increase in requests for plagiarism workshops in recent years. We also realised from the onset that conducting library workshops on plagiarism would not be sustainable in the long-run.

Retiring The Mack: Preparing Campus Community For Library Construction Project, Ady Dewey
Strategic Public Relations Projects
The Bridgewater campus was on the verge of a dramatic change as the Alexander Mack Memorial Library transformed into the John Kenny Forrer Learning Commons. The project impacted every student as the Mack closed its doors in May 2018, library services were moved to another building and warehouse, and new study spaces were created on campus. Despite this project touching every current and prospective student, there was not a distinct communication plan to reach this audience.
At the request of the library administration, the Strategic Public Relations class planned and recommended how to promote and educate the campus community about …

Post-Facts: Information Literacy And Authority After The 2016 Election, Stefanie Bluemle
Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works
This article addresses the challenge that post-truth politics poses to teaching authority in information literacy. First, it isolates an element of the post-truth phenomenon, an element it calls post-facts, to elucidate why teaching source evaluation is not, by itself, an antidote to fake news or other evidence of Americans’ media illiteracy. Second, it addresses the implications of post-facts politics for the concept of authority as defined by the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, drawing on the work of Patrick Wilson and Max Weber to illustrate which elements of authority librarians must rethink due to recent events.

Technology Supports For Individuals With Disabilities In New York State: A Survey Of Current Status, Margaret M. Laskowski, Dana R. Reinecke, Hsin-Liang Chen
University Libraries Faculty Research & Creative Works
This exploratory study examines the current use of instructional technology, and assistive technologies for support of individuals with learning disabilities as well as other disabilities in New York State.
The researchers used SurveyMonkey and postings on social media websites for various professional organizations to solicit responses to a questionnaire from individuals working with or caring for persons with disabilities. A small sample of responses (N=122) revealed barriers to the use of technology, as well as the preferred type and most convenient for persons with disabilities. School districts may want to use this survey with students, parents and community members.
