Opening Keynote: Working Together To Build And Sustain A Global Knowledge Commons, Kathleen Shearer

Digital Initiatives Symposium

The widespread deployment of repository systems in higher education and research institutions provides the foundation for a distributed, globally networked infrastructure for scholarly communication. However, repository platforms are still using technologies and protocols designed almost twenty years ago, before the boom of the Web and the dominance of Google, social networking, semantic web and ubiquitous mobile devices. This is, in large part, why repositories have not fully realized their potential and function mainly as passive recipients of the final versions of their users’ conventionally published research outputs. In order to leverage the value of the repository network, we need to …

Making The Most Of Student Workers: Creative Approaches To Staffing, Kathleen Spring

Faculty & Staff Presentations

When considering and launching an institutional repository, staffing is often the first question on people’s minds. Many libraries are eager to embark on this project but are anxious they’ll need to hire someone to take the wheel. The good news is many institutions have come up with creative staffing solutions that ensure repository growth and development with far less than 1 FTE. In this presentation, Kathleen Spring shares how she manages Linfield College's institutional repository with the vital contributions of student workers. She discusses some of the carefully designed workflows that meet Linfield’s repository needs and talks about how other …

An Exploratory Study For Understanding Reasons Of (Not-)Using Internet Of Things, Radhika Garg, Jenna Kim Apr 2018

An Exploratory Study For Understanding Reasons Of (Not-)Using Internet Of Things, Radhika Garg, Jenna Kim

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

The potential of things or objects generating and processing data about day-to-day activities of its users has given a new level of popularity to Internet of Things (IoT) among its consumers. Even though the popularity has seen a steady increase, the use of IoT devices has been slow and abandonment rapid. To build on the existing literature and advance our understanding of the sociological processes of use and non-use of these devices, this paper presents results from the survey of 489 IoT users. Our qualitative analysis of open ended questions revealed that the motives for use include multi-functionality of devices …

Self-Efficacy Change Associated With A Cognitive Load-Based Intervention In An Undergraduate Biology Course, David F. Feldon, Joana Franco, Jie Chao, James Peugh, Cathy Maahs-Fladung Apr 2018

Self-Efficacy Change Associated With A Cognitive Load-Based Intervention In An Undergraduate Biology Course, David F. Feldon, Joana Franco, Jie Chao, James Peugh, Cathy Maahs-Fladung

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Cognitive load theory (CLT) holds that discovery learning and other instructional strategies imposing high levels of extraneous load on novice learners hinder learning. Such learning conditions are also associated with significant drops in persistence, a key measure of motivation. However, research within the CLT framework typically engages motivation as a necessary precursor to learning, rather than as an outcome of instruction. In this study, we examine changes in motivational beliefs as outcomes of learners' cognitive processes through a CLT lens as they engage with instruction. Using a double-blind quasi-experimental design, we manipulate the level of cognitive load imposed on participants …

Analysis Of College Students’ Personal Health Information Activities: Online Survey, Sujin Kim, Donghee Sinn, Sue Yeon Syn

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

Background: With abundant personal health information at hand, individuals are faced with a critical challenge in evaluating the informational value of health care records to keep useful information and discard that which is determined useless. Young, healthy college students who were previously dependents of adult parents or caregivers are less likely to be concerned with disease management. Personal health information management (PHIM) is a special case of personal information management (PIM) that is associated with multiple interactions among varying stakeholders and systems. However, there has been limited evidence to understand informational or behavioral underpinning of the college students’ PHIM activities, …

The Discoverability Of Award-Winning Undergraduate Research In History: Implications For Academic Libraries, Jody C. Fagan, Malia Willey

Libraries

Making scholarly information visible to web search engines is an ongoing challenge, and undergraduate research is no exception. Using a sample of award-winning undergraduate history papers and journals, the authors searched Google, Google Scholar, Microsoft Academic, and the authors’ institutional repository to gauge the difficulty of locating these works. Given that many of these works were not easily found, results suggest that libraries and their institutions could be doing more to increase the discoverability of undergraduate research. Based on the success stories observed in this study, we offer strategies to libraries and librarians for increasing the visibility of undergraduate student …

The Anchor, Volume 131.22: April 18, 2018, Hope College

The Anchor: 2018

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Orcid Integration At The Unlv Libraries, A.L. Carson, Matthew Murray, John Novak

Library Faculty Research

As of spring 2018, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Libraries is in the middle of its ORCID implementation for campus. The process began in late 2016, when UNLV became premium members of ORCID through a deal negotiated by the Greater Western Library Alliance. ORCID provides researchers with a persistent digital identifier, which disambiguates individuals and allows them to receive proper attribution and credit for their work.

As premium members, the Libraries would receive reports from ORCID about researcher activity and have access to the ORCID API. With the API, the Libraries could receive notifications of our campus research …

Evaluation Of Open Data Government Sites: A Comparative Study, Jayanta Kr Nayek

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The problems of open data government sites are mainly in the way data is presented by various government data repositories. There are no metadata standards, specifications, or protocols to achieve better discoverability and interoperability. This paper aims to find a way to solve the problems with open data government sites and propose a framework to provide web based data services which will be semantically structured and also propose a common metadata standard or mechanism for interoperability. Six data government sites have been selected for the study, according to the more number of dataset available and also to cover all continents …

Assessment Of Ict Competencies Of Library Staff In Selected Universities In Kwara State, Nigeria, Tunde Toyese Oyedokun, Fausat Ayobami Oyewumi, M Lawal Akanbi Phd, Dolapo Medinat Laaro Mrs

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

ABSTRACT

Information and communication technology (ICT) has changed the world of library such that activities been carried out manually before are now been automated. The work of library staff are now being characterized by information and communication technologies. Academic libraries were observed to be more equipped with information infrastructures more than any other type of libraries, but no library no matter how well equipped that doesn’t require the service of a workforce that is highly competent in the use of ICT tools, as such information infrastructure will remain unused or under-utilized. It is in connection to the above, that this …

All Musselman Library Staff Works

In September 2015, our team launched The First World War Letters of H.J.C. Peirs (www.jackpeirs.org), a digital history initiative built on collaboration between faculty, students, and library staff. The project is founded on amazing primary source material, but with limited financial support and little dedicated staff time. We leveraged the creativity and hard work of our team members to build a website that is maintained by students and enhanced whenever possible with features and commentary from faculty and staff. Members of #TeamPeirs discussed the evolution of the project, the nature of our collaboration, and the intersection of audiences …
