Library Minisites: Organization & Effective Implementation, Dana Haugh

Library Faculty Publications

A minisite, as the name suggests, refers to a site that is miniature in size relative to its parent site. A minisite is generally a constituent of a larger website in that it exists as a supplementary element highlighting one specific aspect of a company or organization. Introducing a minisite can help streamline a library website while also ensuring specific features, resources, events, or branches receive the dedicated attention they deserve.

Book Nook For All: How Library Partnerships Can Grow Advocacy, Jessica C. Mcintosh, Kirsten Peninger

Library Faculty & Staff Scholarship

“Town and gown” partnerships—i.e., partnerships between universities and the communities in which they operate—are growing in popularity and strength, and libraries should be leaders in creating these partnerships. In the spring of 2018, Courtright Memorial Library (CML) and Westerville Public Library (WPL) joined forces to bring a shared browsing collection to their local constituents. This article will examine the process, outcome, and continued work of developing and marketing this collection. It will also explore the partnership that developed naturally between these two libraries of different types during the creation of the shared browsing collection, specifically the cosponsoring of a collaborative …

Inflo-Mation: A Model For Exploring Information Behavior Through Hip Hop, Kafi D. Kumasi Jul 2018

Inflo-Mation: A Model For Exploring Information Behavior Through Hip Hop, Kafi D. Kumasi

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

This paper explores the insights that hip hop might afford young adult library researchers who study information behavior, particularly in online environments. A Critical Race Theory (CRT) approach was used to explain how existing information behavior models describe youth experiences in ways that mask their unique racialized experiences and culturally specific information-creating behaviors. Using CRT’s counter-storytelling method, a new model called INFLO-mation is introduced, featuring a continuum of information behaviors captured within three descriptive categories of creativity: Rhythm, Rhyme, and Remix (R3). Findings include a discussion the INFLO model, its classification scheme, and illustrative examples from contemporary teens’ …

Out Of Sight, But Not Out Of Mind: Surveying Library Use Among Students Studying Abroad, Marc Vinyard Jul 2018

Out Of Sight, But Not Out Of Mind: Surveying Library Use Among Students Studying Abroad, Marc Vinyard

Pepperdine University Libraries

Pepperdine University's six international campus libraries are not staffed by librarians. However, the library serves overseas students with small print collections, course specific LibGuides and highly trained student assistants. A goal of the LibGuides and student workers is to make students aware of library resources and services while studying abroad. Students studying overseas were surveyed to determine their use and awareness of library resources. In addition, to determine if the library could have an important role in supporting study abroad programs, students were asked if they had research assignments that required outside resources. While the results of the survey revealed …

Mindfulness Practices For Information Literacy: Encouraging Reflective Engagement With Information, Liz Chenevey Jul 2018

Mindfulness Practices For Information Literacy: Encouraging Reflective Engagement With Information, Liz Chenevey

Libraries

Information Literacy is an important skill required by the APA of undergraduate psychology students. The Association of College & Research Libraries partially defines Information Literacy as the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information. These abilities are most often seen in research, yet many undergraduate students see research projects as a frustrating burden and another stressor in their busy semesters. Librarians can help them navigate the changing information landscape and the research process as whole, but how much reflection and synthesis do students take part in? Mindfulness practices are increasing in popularity in higher education as they …

You've Gotta Read This: Summer Reading At Musselman Library (2018), Musselman Library

You’ve Gotta Read This: Summer Reading at Musselman Library

Each year, Musselman Library asks Gettysburg College faculty, staff, and administrators to help create a suggested summer reading list. We hope to inspire students and the rest of our community to take time in the summer to sit back, relax, and read; or watch a memorable film.

With the 2018 collection, 102 employees offer 178 recommendations of favorite books, films, and television programs. These selections touch on everything from politics to romance.

We include several special features this year. Two of our regular columnists return once again: James Udden with his latest recommendations for the best film and TV, and …

Myrtle Jackson Ross was born in 1929 in Austin County, Texas, where her father worked as a cotton-picker. Ross graduated from the Gregory School on Victor Street before attending Booker T. Washington High School on West Dallas Street.

Togetherness With The Past: Literary Pedagogy And The Digital Archive, Madeline B. Gangnes Jul 2018

Togetherness With The Past: Literary Pedagogy And The Digital Archive, Madeline B. Gangnes

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

Archival materials are invaluable to an understanding of the historical, cultural, and material contexts in which literary texts were published. Materiality, paratextual elements, and other key characteristics of literature cannot be discerned from recent editions. Yet original and rare versions of literary texts are difficult or impossible for most scholars, let alone their students, to access. Digital facsimiles provide opportunities to examine archival texts over the Internet, alleviating logistical and financial barriers. In Dust: The Archive and Cultural History (2001), Carolyn Steedman writes: “The Archive is a place in which people can be alone with the past” (81); archives are …

The Death Of Professor Jones: Ghosts And Memory In A Small University Archives, Erin Dix

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

The following is a true story of hauntings, literal and figurative, at a small liberal arts college in the Midwest. It is the tale of Haunted Lawrence: a walking tour of the Lawrence University campus featuring historical stories of the ghostly and unexplained, designed and led by staff in the University Archives for the past ten years. Perennially popular with the campus community, the tour has grown to plague the university archivist. This essay is an attempt to exorcise her personal Haunted Lawrence demons.

Subjectivity And Methodology In The Arch‘I’Ve, Elizabeth J. Vincelette Jul 2018

Subjectivity And Methodology In The Arch‘I’Ve, Elizabeth J. Vincelette

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

This article explores methodologies from the fields of library archival science, human geography, composition and rhetoric, and established editorial practices in English studies. By elaborating on the role of a researcher’s subjectivity in archival creation, this work expands the conversation regarding methodology and archives, especially how archives present us with new ways of seeing and making narratives during the editorial decision-making involved in their creation. Writing about my own experience, I privilege the researcher’s point of view with a narrative about my construction of a digital archive. With archival research, we should promote the revelation of methods and methodology to …

Hospital Librarians: Training The Next Generation Of Doctors, Heather Martin Jul 2018

Hospital Librarians: Training The Next Generation Of Doctors, Heather Martin

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Hospital librarians address a wide array of information needs. They help nurses figure out how to take care of patients, help physicians with difficult cases, help families get reliable health information, and sometimes the information they provide even helps save a life. They also play an important role in training the next generation of doctors. At one hospital in Oregon, Providence St. Joseph Health System Library Services has integrated traditional library instruction directly into the curriculum of the Internal Medicine Residency Program.

Providence St. Joseph Health (PSJH) System Library Services has a staff of 16 librarians and library paraprofessionals dedicated …

Seeking Glimpses: Reflections On Doing Archival Work, Alex Hanson, Stephanie Jones, Thomas Passwater, Noah Wilson Jul 2018

Seeking Glimpses: Reflections On Doing Archival Work, Alex Hanson, Stephanie Jones, Thomas Passwater, Noah Wilson

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

This article explores the role of archival research in understanding and generating social histories from the perspectives of four different doctoral students as they reflect on their archival research experiences. We argue that archival research is complex, subjective, contextual, and at times, incomplete. Our various perspectives address ideas of privilege, representation, what it means to remember (or forget), how archives are constituted and reconstituted, and where we can make meaning in archival spaces. This article demonstrates that although archival research has had a presence in Composition and Rhetoric for some time, that presence is continually shifting, and even when embarking …

People Of The Stacks: ‘The Archivist’ Character In Fiction, Sharon Wolff Jul 2018

People Of The Stacks: ‘The Archivist’ Character In Fiction, Sharon Wolff

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

Archives and archival professionals suffer from what may be termed as an “image problem” due to their general lack of exposure to the public. With their efforts being tucked away in various repositories, their fictional representatives become an important way to give people an idea of what they do. With the help of an article by Arlene Schmuland, two works of fiction, People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks from 2008 and The Archivist by Martha Cooley from 1998, are used to compare fictional archivists and the ways their differences may indicate a change in how their real-life counterparts are …

Motley Crew: Collaboration Across An Academic Library To Revive An Orphaned Collection, Amy Jankowski, Anne Schultz, Laura Soito Jul 2018

Motley Crew: Collaboration Across An Academic Library To Revive An Orphaned Collection, Amy Jankowski, Anne Schultz, Laura Soito

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

It can be difficult to find time and motivation to effectively address collection management for materials in specialized areas that fall outside the primary scope of one’s usual responsibilities. The pressure of crowded shelves in the authors’ largest library and the associated difficulties of helping users locate materials led a team of faculty librarians and staff to evaluate and consolidate an “orphaned collection” of books in health and medicine call numbers. The authors describe how a project team established a data-informed evaluation and weeding process that minimized affective decision-making and considered the nuances of collection management between disciplines.
