While the information retrieved can improve educational outcomes, such studies must not break the wall of trust or compromise student privacy. To this end, it’s imperative to understand the methods of how privacy is ensured in the field of educational data mining and learning analytics, the limitations of these strategies, the complications that may follow, and the possible resolutions. In this project, we take a systematic approach to review studies in the educational data mining field. Initially, we examine …

The Discovery and User Experience Team conducted an open-ended survey designed to gather information about how Primo works within the context of the daily work of patron-centered staff and librarians. We felt that this information and feedback was important because it provided the only avenue in which reference and instruction librarians could give direct input to the Alliance about how to improve our current discovery interface. The survey asked reference and instruction librarians about their specific experiences with Primo with the goal of identifying ways that the Discovery and User Experience Team could better support these users.

Partnering For Social Justice: Social Work Students’ Placement At Public Libraries, Sarah C. Johnson

Publications and Research

While the collaborative trend among professional social workers and librarians is garnering much deserved attention, literature about social work students partnering with public libraries is virtually nonexistent. Public librarians can advocate for social justice by initiating partnerships with master-level social work (MSW) students to enhance small- and large-scale programs to address the unique needs of patrons. In this chapter, I highlight existing collaborations among public libraries and student social workers to raise awareness of possibilities.

Further, research in complex topics such as harassment and graphic content can leave researchers vulnerable to emotional and physical harm. There is a need to bring researchers together to discuss challenges across sensitive research spaces and environments. We propose a workshop to explore the methodological, ethical, and emotional challenges of sensitive research in HCI. We will actively recruit from diverse research environments (industry, academia, government, etc.) and methods areas (qualitative, quantitative, design practices, etc.) and identify commonalities in and encourage relationship-building …
