Guiding Students Through Choppy Creative Waters: Collaborative Pedagogy To Empower Ethical Creators, Kelsey Sheaffer, Jessica Kohout-Tailor May 2019

Guiding Students Through Choppy Creative Waters: Collaborative Pedagogy To Empower Ethical Creators, Kelsey Sheaffer, Jessica Kohout-Tailor

Publications

With the rise of ‘multimodality’, students are increasingly creating digital projects that require an understanding of copyright that includes Creative Commons, to both search for and appropriately remix the original work of others. In this session, learn how two librarians collaboratively developed their student-centered pedagogy to apply active-learning strategies in the classroom for these special creative copyright sessions. In their approach, the librarians engaged the student-as-producer to make creative copyright more accessible and applicable to their projects. These instructional interventions build on the traditional lecture-style session on Copyright Law to support non-traditional projects.

Touro University Libraries Publications and Research

This collaboration amongst Touro College and University System (TCUS) libraries began as an initiative of the College Research Council to increase TCUS's research footprint. Specifically, faculty and students needed to develop greater research knowledge and skills. The Library Advisory Committee, one of four subcommittees of the Research Council, recognized the wealth of research taught across the system by individual libraries, and saw this as an opportunity for collaboration.

Be An Ally For Accessibility: Tips For All Librarians, Shawn Mccann, Rebeca Peacock

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Accessibility is a concern for librarians in digital as well as physical spaces, and we have a responsibility to uphold the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). However, regardless of legal requirements, librarians endeavour to make content available to everyone. People with disabilities are no exception. While some of the more complex accessibility issues should be left to instructional technologists and web developers, there are plenty of things that anyone posting content online can do to increase content accessibility. Here are five tips that we have found useful for creating guides, posting handouts in our Learning Management System (LMS), building online …

Faculty Format Preferences In The Performing Arts: A Multi-Institutional Study, Joe C. Clark, Jonathan Sauceda, Sheridan Stormes

Scholarship and Professional Work

Resources for teaching in higher education have undergone a tremendous evolution during the past several decades. The Internet and commercial services, such as YouTube and Google, have revolutionized the manner by which students and faculty access information to both conduct research and meet course requirements. This mixed methods study implemented an online survey and interviews to determine how performing arts faculty at three institutions integrate library resources and services into their teaching. Conclusions indicate that, while personal collections and Internet resources provide a majority of teaching content, the academic library still offers important access to materials for instruction.

Library Staff Publications, Presentations & Journal Articles

A team of Bryant University Librarians are participating in the EXCITE Transformation for Libraries program through the Connecticut State Library. We conducted a series of structured group and one-on-one conversations with students, faculty, and staff in order to learn about how they think and feel about teamwork, the library, and collaboration at the library. We found that students in particular were far more responsive to community sessions than in taking surveys.

Altruism Or Self-Interest? Exploring The Motivations Of Open Access Authors, Robert Heaton, Dylan Burns, Becky Thoms

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

More than 250 authors at Utah State University published an Open Access (OA) article in 2016. Analysis of survey results and publication data from Scopus suggests that the following factors led authors to choose OA venues: ability to pay publishing charges, disciplinary colleagues’ positive attitudes toward OA, and personal feelings such as altruism and desire to reach a wide audience. Tenure status was not an apparent factor. This article adds to the body of literature on author motivations and can inform library outreach and marketing efforts, the creation of new publishing models, and the conversation about the larger scholarly publishing …

CDRH Grant Reports

The current study, “Application of the Image Analysis for Archival Discovery Team’s First- Generation Methods and Software to the Burney Collection of British Newspapers,” is the first test of our approaches—methods and software—to a different newspaper corpus, specifically the 17th and 18 Century Burney Newspapers Collection. This study stands as the first complete attempt at applying Aida’s software and methods to non-Chronicling America newspapers, as a step toward understanding the potential of our approaches across digitized historic newspapers. In taking this step, our goals were (1) to test how well the software and a classifier model developed on Chronicling America …

Crude Oil Price Prediction With Decision Tree Based Regression Approach, Engu Chen, Xin James He May 2019

Crude Oil Price Prediction With Decision Tree Based Regression Approach, Engu Chen, Xin James He

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Crude oil is an essential commodity for industry and the prediction of its price is crucial for many business entities and government organizations. While there have been quite a few conventional statistical models to forecast oil prices, we find that there is not much research using decision tree models to predict crude oil prices. In this research, we develop decision tree models to forecast crude oil prices. In addition to historical crude oil price time series data, we also use some predictor variables that would potentially affect crude oil prices, including crude oil demand and supply, and monthly GDP and …
