Confident But Lacking Support: School Librarians And Students With Autism, Amelia Anderson, Selena Layden
STEMPS Faculty Publications
School librarians work with students across their organizations, including those with disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, little is known about how prepared school librarians are to serve these students. Using a mixed-methods survey, this study sought to explore training school librarians have taken about ASD and students with disabilities, as well as the effects of training on librarian confidence and library services. Based on results, librarians who received training through their school district or professional development outside of coursework reported being more confident in supporting students with ASD in the school library.

Twitter’s APIs are now the main data source for social media researchers. A large number of studies have utilized Twitter data for diverse research interests. Twitter users can share their precise real-time location, and Twitter APIs can provide this information as longitude and latitude. These geotagged Twitter data can help to study human activities and movements for different applications. Compared to the mostly small-scale data samples in different domains, such as social science, collecting geotagged data offers large samples. There is a fundamental question whether geotagged users can represent non-geotagged users. While some studies have investigated the question from different …

Personal Goal Setting Behavior And Professional Outlooks Of Academic Library Employees, Leo Lo, Amelia Anderson
STEMPS Faculty Publications
Studies indicate correlations between personal goal-setting behaviors, performance and attitude in professional roles. An online study was developed and conducted in 2016 with academic library employees to better understand the goal-setting behavior of library employees in a particular context, via setting New Year’s resolutions, which is defined as "a decision to do something or to behave in a certain manner". Results show that nearly half (49.6 percent) of all respondents set New Year’s resolutions in 2016. Goals related to health and fitness topped the list of goals that were set, followed by occupational goals. Of those who felt unclear about …

Feminist Co-Mentoring As Advocacy: Collaborative Reflective Practice For Professional And Personal Growth, Alyssa Berger, Nicole Gustavsen, Penelope Wood
Feminist Co-Mentoring As Advocacy: Collaborative Reflective Practice For Professional And Personal Growth, Alyssa Berger, Nicole Gustavsen, Penelope Wood
Foley Library Scholarship
This chapter serves as a case study describing three science, technology, engineering, and mathematics librarians' processes, reflections, and growth through co-mentorship. The authors discuss the processes and limitations of traditional, hierarchical mentorship structures in academic libraries and outline their work moving beyond this model to create and maintain a feminist co-mentorship community. The peer mentorship model is intentionally non-hierarchical and works as a complementary support system alongside formal mentorship relationships. They outline the benefits of this model, which include the provision of support around the emotional labor inherent in working in higher education, balancing professional and personal growth, and navigating …

Writing Consultants At The University Of Dayton: A Collaborative Cross-Training Approach, Heidi Gauder
Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
The creation of a new learning commons at the University of Dayton Roesch Library not only highlighted the research and writing support available to students, but it also led to an entirely new library-led cross-training program for writing center student employees. Prior to the new learning commons, the writing center occupied spaces on the upper floors of the library, and the staff of the two units enjoyed a friendly, albeit distant, relationship for many years. The new learning commons, named the Knowledge Hub, brought the library research team directly together with the writing center, both in terms of proximity and …
Two Chefs Are Better Than One: Partner Image Analysis, Kayla Harris
Two Chefs Are Better Than One: Partner Image Analysis, Kayla Harris
Books and Book Chapters by University of Dayton Faculty
In this update of a traditional image analysis exercise, students work together as partners or small groups to identify key components found in visual primary sources. Students analyze an image individually, answering a set of guided analysis questions. They communicate their findings with their partner or group, who analyzed a different, but related image. The groups answer additional questions after collaboratively reviewing, and potentially altering, their initial findings to develop a more complete understanding of the images, such as what is in the images, the purpose they were created for, or the creation time period. This exercise specifically utilizes principles …

The Corruption Of Copyright And Returning It To Its Original Purposes, Michelle M. Wu
The Corruption Of Copyright And Returning It To Its Original Purposes, Michelle M. Wu
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Since its inception, Copyright has had two purposes: the private interest of the author in being paid for her work and the public interest served by the dissemination of these works. Within the last two decades, though, some industries have systematically undermined both of those interests, redirecting the benefits of copyright towards themselves instead of the intended beneficiaries. This paper looks at the book, music, and entertainment industries, examines how copyright has been used to suppress the uses it was intended to foster, and explores ongoing and proposed avenues for course correction.

As the University of New Mexico responded to the coronavirus pandemic with emergency building closures and a shift to online services, the University Libraries faced challenges making and maintaining personal connections with users in the absence of face-to-face contact. Recognizing that necessary public health restrictions isolated all students, faculty, and staff to some extent, a science librarian and an English librarian collaborated to develop a series of three Zoom-facilitated programs that provided fun activities (i.e., a movie watch party, a book discussion, and a team trivia game) to engage a socially distanced campus community while highlighting various library resources. They …

Debugging By Design: A Constructionist Approach To High School Students’ Crafting And Coding Of Electronic Textiles As Failure Artifacts, Deborah A. Fields, Yasmin B. Kafai, Luis Morales-Navarro, Justice T. Walker
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Much attention in constructionism has focused on designing tools and activities that support learners in designing fully finished and functional applications and artifacts to be shared with others. But helping students learn to debug their applications often takes on a surprisingly more instructionist stance by giving them checklists, teaching them strategies or providing them with test programs. The idea of designing bugs for learning—or debugging by design—makes learners agents of their own learning and, more importantly, of making and solving mistakes. In this paper, we report on our implementation of “Debugging by Design” activities in a high school classroom over …
