Access Challenge For Public Health Students, Janelle Wertzberger, Amy B. Dailey
All Musselman Library Staff Works
Health sciences students regularly engage in problem-based learning. This information literacy activity introduces a public health scenario and asks students to use published sources to determine the cause of a described disease and develop a treatment protocol. The activity design highlights different levels of information privilege and invites students to consider challenges to accessing public health information in a variety of settings. The exercise was initially created for undergraduate students in a 300-level global health course.

How To Catch A Digital Speed Goat: A Web Archiving Case Study At The University Of Wyoming, Sara Davis, Rachel Gattermeyer
How To Catch A Digital Speed Goat: A Web Archiving Case Study At The University Of Wyoming, Sara Davis, Rachel Gattermeyer
Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists
In an effort to keep current with trends in how people connect with information, the University of Wyoming (UW), like many institutions and companies, has elected to become as paperless as possible. Whether electronic or analog, records are essential in documenting the history, culture, and governance of an organization, and records retention schedules in archives are commonly used to ensure vital records are kept and maintained according to best practices and state laws. Much like the speed goat—the fastest land animal in North America and found throughout Wyoming—websites are hard to capture before they disappear. The high possibility of vanishing …

Human Errors In Data Breaches: An Exploratory Configurational Analysis, Gabriel A. Cornejo
Human Errors In Data Breaches: An Exploratory Configurational Analysis, Gabriel A. Cornejo
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Information Systems (IS) are critical for employee productivity and organizational success. Data breaches are on the rise—with thousands of data breaches accounting for billions of records breached and annual global cybersecurity costs projected to reach $10.5 trillion by 2025. A data breach is the unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information—and can be achieved intentionally or unintentionally. Significant causes of data breaches are hacking and human error; in some estimates, human error accounted for about a quarter of all data breaches in 2018. Furthermore, the significance of human error on data breaches is largely underrepresented, as hackers often capitalize on organizational users’ …

Social Media Usage In The Academic Libraries: Current Trends And Challenges In Pakistan With Special Reference To Facebook, Shahzadi Humbhi, Shabbir Tareen, Alia Humbhi
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The current study aims to investigate the usage of social networking sites (SNS) for promoting library resources and services in academic libraries as well as assessing the perception of library professionals regarding SNS (Facebook) and also identifying the challenges that prevent library professionals from promoting the resources and services of libraries through SNS. For this study primary data collected from 167 library professionals of the academic libraries. A structured questionnaire was used and a systematic sampling technique was adopted for data collection purposes. The results show that still the usage of social media is limited in the academic libraries of …

Improving Employees’ Compliance With Password Policies, Enas Albataineh
Improving Employees’ Compliance With Password Policies, Enas Albataineh
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
Employees’ lack of compliance with password policies increases password susceptibility, which leads to financial damages to the organizations as a result of information disclosure, fraud, and unauthorized transactions. However, few studies have examined what motivates employees to comply with password policies.
The purpose of this quantitative cross-sectional study was to examine what factors influence employees’ compliance with password policies. A theoretical model was developed based on Protection Motivation Theory (PMT), General Deterrence Theory (GDT), Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA), and Psychological Ownership Theory to explain employees’ compliance with password policies.
A non-probability convenience sample was employed. The sample consisted of …
Enterprise Social Network Systems Implementation Model For Knowledge Sharing Among Supply Chain It Professionals, Edgardo Luis Velez-Mandes
Enterprise Social Network Systems Implementation Model For Knowledge Sharing Among Supply Chain It Professionals, Edgardo Luis Velez-Mandes
CCAC Theses and Dissertations
With the increased use of social network technologies in organizational environments, there is a need to understand how these technologies facilitate organizational knowledge management, particularly knowledge sharing. Prior research has focused on the relationship between knowledge management and enterprise social networking systems (ESNS), but little research has been conducted relating to how organizations implement and use ESNS for knowledge sharing. The goal was to construct and validate internally a model that offers guidance for the successful implementation and use of ESNS for knowledge sharing and building successful virtual communities of practice (vCoPs) among IT supply chain professionals in a healthcare …

Automatic Metadata Extraction Incorporating Visual Features From Scanned Electronic Theses And Dissertations, Muntabir Hasan Choudhury, Himarsha R. Jayanetti, Jian Wu, William A. Ingram, Edward A. Fox
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) contain domain knowledge that can be used for many digital library tasks, such as analyzing citation networks and predicting research trends. Automatic metadata extraction is important to build scalable digital library search engines. Most existing methods are designed for born-digital documents, so they often fail to extract metadata from scanned documents such as ETDs. Traditional sequence tagging methods mainly rely on text-based features. In this paper, we propose a conditional random field (CRF) model that combines text-based and visual features. To verify the robustness of our model, we extended an existing corpus and created a …

Large Scale Subject Category Classification Of Scholarly Papers With Deep Attentive Neural Networks, Bharath Kandimalla, Shaurya Rohatgi, Jian Wu, C. Lee Giles
Computer Science Faculty Publications
Subject categories of scholarly papers generally refer to the knowledge domain(s) to which the papers belong, examples being computer science or physics. Subject category classification is a prerequisite for bibliometric studies, organizing scientific publications for domain knowledge extraction, and facilitating faceted searches for digital library search engines. Unfortunately, many academic papers do not have such information as part of their metadata. Most existing methods for solving this task focus on unsupervised learning that often relies on citation networks. However, a complete list of papers citing the current paper may not be readily available. In particular, new papers that have few …
Fact-Checking Viral Trends For News Writers, Elizabeth M. Downey
Fact-Checking Viral Trends For News Writers, Elizabeth M. Downey
UL Publications
Social media is a constant in day-to-day life and is often the first place news breaks. However, the likelihood of false information being spread across social media is high, and this can affect journalists trying to do their jobs, in both gathering information and trying to achieve balance. Reporters and news writers need to be able to quickly evaluate the legitimacy of social media sources for information, especially viral posts, lest they be accused of spreading “fake news.” This chapter examines how social media has disrupted traditional news reporting and caused media outlets to tackle the audience’s opinion of them …

Mapping The Current Landscape Of Research Library Engagement With Emerging Technologies In Research And Learning: Final Report, Sarah Lippincott, Mary Lee Kennedy, Clifford Lynch, Scout Calvert, Jocelyn Cozzo
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications
The generation, dissemination, and analysis of digital information is a significant driver, and consequence, of technological change. As data and information stewards in physical and virtual space, research libraries are thoroughly entangled in the challenges presented by the Fourth Industrial Revolution:1 a societal shift powered not by steam or electricity, but by data, and characterized by a fusion of the physical and digital worlds.2 Organizing, structuring, preserving, and providing access to growing volumes of the digital data generated and required by research and industry will become a critically important function. As partners with the community of researchers and scholars, research …
