Measuring Use Of The Academic Print Reference Collection, Jennifer Putnam Davis

Georgia Library Quarterly

Level of use is a key factor in print reference collection development, but often this is determined by anecdotal observation rather than empirical measures. This is evident by the lack of use studies available in the literature. Yet there is a large presence of literature on weeding the print reference collection to repurpose its space. Managing this collection without assessing use can have negative impacts on both library staff and library users. This article presents a review of the available literature on use studies of print reference collections in academic libraries. Methodology and results of the studies are discussed.

At the Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library, librarians conduct instruction sessions on various aspects of evidencebased medicine for first- and second-year medical students. One of these sessions, the Chest Pain Formative Observed Simulated Clinical Experience (FOSCE), introduces the Framingham Study, later cohort studies, and the Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD) Risk Calculator to first-year medical students. This calculator includes race as an input and over or underestimates risk for certain groups. This session previously mentioned the need to diversify study populations and described the evolution of the algorithm, but it did not highlight these as critical issues for discussion. Researcher profile systems are web-based tools which attempt to capture the scholarly output of a researcher. Some tools such as Google Scholar profiles and ORCiDs are opt-in systems that researchers must actively create and cultivate. Others such as the Scopus author profile are algorithmically generated and must be claimed by an author and checked for accuracy.

These profiles continue to grow in importance as a way for fellow researchers, potential employers, and possible collaborators to learn about a researcher’s scholarship. Therefore, it’s important for researchers to maintain these profiles and to ensure that they are accurate and complete.

“Can You See My Screen?”: Utilizing Virtual Appointments For Remote Research Support, Amanda Hahn, Jeremy Mcginniss

This poster will show how one academic library employed virtual research appointments as part of the library’s response to COVID-19. Specific data points highlight student demographics, number of appointments, time spent per meeting, how usage coincided with the semester schedule, and impact of link location on service availability. The poster also identifies best practices, adjustments made since implementation, and results of initial assessment. The objective of this poster is to show how other libraries can take a similar approach to adapting and maintaining services for a virtual environment.

Over the last two decades, the population of Latinx students enrolled in higher education has increased by 142%, but they are still underrepresented overall. According to 2015 United States census data, only 16% of Hispanic adults have a Bachelor’s degree or higher compared to 54% of Asian Americans, 36% of (non-Hispanic) white people, and 23% of Black people. The needs of Latinx students in higher education are obviously not being met. Library employees face countless changes, big and small, in their workplaces every day: not only the COVID-19 pandemic but also such commonplace events as open positions, renovations, budget cuts, and new library systems. No single handbook can anticipate all the changing needs. This case study discusses how one particular library responded, in a specific time and context. The librarians and staff created a model of self-leadership in an effort to articulate a shared purpose and to establish cohesion and well-being in a group that was sometimes divided and stressed. This book chapter reviews the various stages of response to the “Illegal aliens” subject heading change, including the initial advocacy within both the undocumented student community and the library community, the Library of Congress’s announcement that it would enact the change, the subsequent backlash among conservative politicians and media, and the resulting inaction on the part of the Library of Congress. Whereas the library profession seized the mantle of activism in reaction to the Patriot Act, the response to the Library of Congress’ inaction has been lukewarm at best. In Part of Our Lives: A People's History of the American Public Library, author and library historian Wayne A. Instruction using Special Collections and archival resources tends to play a minor role in library instruction programs. Special Collections is more often employed in exhibitions or public forums for lectures, presentations, and academic discussions. Hands-on opportunities to teach with Special Collections, if available, are typically limited to oneshot lecture sessions with a handful of resources specific to a singular course subject or assignment topic.
