Systematic Reviews In Business And Management: Are Business Librarians Ready?, Grace Liu

In recent years, there has been a trending need for library support in systematic reviews beyond the health science and medical disciplines. Splenda (2020) at Carnegie Mellon University documented the library’s first collaboration with Campbell Collaboration to extend the systematic review support to the business and management field. But how ready are business librarians in supporting systematic reviews? In this article, I would like to share my recent thinking about this topic and discuss how to get us prepared for this emerging role.

This article describes a private, mid-sized university library’s experience of hosting a music festival-themed event in the library building as part of new student orientation, with program evaluation and student learning assessment at the forefront of planning. The authors and co-planners will discuss four years of data to explore the connection between library outreach and students’ use of the library, their perceptions of the institution, and the role the event plays in shaping student success. It offers recommendations for collaborating with academic libraries and approaches in future cross-campus collaborations, including using a scaffolding approach to outline the goals and assessment …

This chapter draws on the author’s experience as an outreach librarian to provide practical guidance for budgeting library programs in financially constrained environments. It emphasizes that limited funding should not stifle creativity; rather, it should inspire innovation and strategic thinking. The chapter outlines approaches for developing strong program proposals, identifying key budget components, and aligning initiatives with institutional priorities. It also explores various funding strategies, including internal support, partnerships, grants, revenue generation, and crowdfunding. Ultimately, the chapter encourages library professionals to think broadly and design meaningful programs that enhance the library’s visibility, impact, and value.

Inequitable Impacts Of Textbook Costs At A Small, Private College: Results From A Textbook Survey At Gettysburg College, Sarah Appedu, Mary Elmquist, Janelle Wertzberger, Sharon K. Birch

All Musselman Library Staff Works

Recognizing that higher education settings vary considerably, librarians at Gettysburg College sought to better understand textbook spending behaviors and the effects of costs on our students. We adapted the Florida Virtual Campus 2016 Student Textbook and Course Materials Survey to suit the context of our small, private, liberal arts college. Most students spent $300 in Fall 2019. Financial aid awards did not cover the cost of required books and course materials for most students receiving aid. Negative effects were more pronounced for first-generation students and Pell Grant recipients, who were more likely to not purchase required books, to not register …

This article reports the results of a 2019 survey of academic librarians that investigated their attitudes, practices, and policies regarding open access (OA). This study asks if academic librarians write policies to ensure that they approach OA intentionally and systematically across all library services. The results indicate that, though librarians report favorable beliefs about OA and integrating OA into technical and public services, they seldom create OA policies.

There are different ways to interpret the statement, “the library never closes.” One interpretation is that the library as a place and a building is so vital to a university that it cannot close under any circumstances. At the University of Memphis (UM), one of the universities included in this study, the McWherter library did not close, even in March 2020 when fear and uncertainty around the COVID-19 pandemic were at their height. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the state of entrepreneurial education in library and information science programs and the influence that entrepreneurial education has on LIS students. The study adopted a descriptive research design approach. Both primary and secondary data was collected through questionnaires, observation and data review. The study population comprised of diploma and undergraduate students as well as alumni of LIS. The research data was analyzed through descriptive statistics and the results presented in tables.
