Assessing Patterns Of Disengagement And Re-Entry In Two Local Congregations Of Churches Of Christ, David Mitchell Malone May 1992

Assessing Patterns Of Disengagement And Re-Entry In Two Local Congregations Of Churches Of Christ, David Mitchell Malone

Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates two congregations among Churches of Christ with a prototype instrument adapted from questions used in a national survey (The Unchurched American, The Princeton Religion Research Center, 1978). The ministry objective for this project thesis is to generate an assessment instrument to be used as a tool for ministry between active and inactive church members.

Specific questions addressed are: what are the patterns of disengagement and re-entry in two local congregations connected with Churches of Christ? Is the disengagement of teenagers and young adults (age 13-24) in each local congregation measurably greater than other recognized age categories over …

Leadership In Policy Issue Networks: The New Community College Of Baltimore, Helen H. Bishop Edd May 1992

Leadership In Policy Issue Networks: The New Community College Of Baltimore, Helen H. Bishop Edd

Dissertations

The policy-making process is a complex human endeavor characterized by interactions among leaders and followers who do leadership by placing policy innovations on the political agenda and utilizing their resources to attempt change. If innovative change is accomplished, then the new policy must be implemented at the local level, in ways which may or may not reflect the intentions of those who desired the change, or those who created the new policy. This research focuses on an example of policy making in state government in the area of postsecondary education. The objectives of the study were to determine how coalitions …

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

The University of Northern Iowa's Youth and Human Service Administration academic program established the Institute for Youth Leaders as a permanent home for creative activities to foster professionalism for the youth development field. In 1990, the Institute inaugurated a creative research and communications system for professionals in youth development organizations with the annual National Youth Leadership Symposium. The Symposium is a working conference that focuses on solving practical problems for the emerging youth development profession. The purpose of the Symposium is to serve as an agency of change by raising questions, examining circumstances, making decisions, and taking actions that realize …

Paper Response: Building Supportive Communities For Youth, Linda Klinger Jan 1992

Paper Response: Building Supportive Communities For Youth, Linda Klinger

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

As I read the paper, I was truly excited to hear of Geeta 's research and to hear about these programs building supportive communities for youth. It is so closely linked to all the work that I have done in the community over the last few years. Geeta described some very interesting work being done around the country, and her findings arc certainly current and appropriate for our community. We simply must find ways to collaborate. For those of you who are working for youth-serving agencies, collaboration is going to be the future for you; and you must find effective …

Adolescent Time Use And Its Implications For Youth Serving Agencies, Christine Kwak Jan 1992

Adolescent Time Use And Its Implications For Youth Serving Agencies, Christine Kwak

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

I have been invited to comment on information related to the issue of young people and their use of time. As this paper is brief, I've chosen to focus on the work of one researcher who has contributed much to the knowledge base we have today regarding adolescent's use of out-of-school time and the impact this has on their lives and the institutions that serve them. The researcher I'm referring to is Dr. Elliott Medrich, Director of the Children's Time Study, based out of Berkeley, California. Dr. Medrich has conducted over 10 years of data collection and analysis on time …

Building Supportive Communities For Youth: Local Approaches To Enhancing Positive Youth Development (Paper In Progress), Elaine Johnson, Geeta Tate Jan 1992

Building Supportive Communities For Youth: Local Approaches To Enhancing Positive Youth Development (Paper In Progress), Elaine Johnson, Geeta Tate

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

The African proverb, "it takes a village to raise a child,'' is succinctly accurate. Youth development is the result of the opportunities, experiences, and instruction offered to youth in various settings. Rising concern about both the risks young people are exposed to and the preparatory experiences they are denied has generated an awareness that positive youth development is an incredibly complex process. This complexity and the difficulty faced by families and young people trying to piece together needed supports and opportunities suggest that they should not be expected to do it on their own.

But while the need for concerted …

Programs On Purpose: A Powerful Tool For Enhancing Youth Development, Skip Parham Jan 1992

Programs On Purpose: A Powerful Tool For Enhancing Youth Development, Skip Parham

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

Programs are frequently viewed as the heart of YMCA activity. YMCAs seem to be "activity" centers with a never ending schedule of programs and events designed to include large numbers of young people on a daily basis. YMCAs are volunteer led organizations and it is not uncommon to hear those volunteers proudly recounting anecdotes about the wonderful youth programs that are offered to the community by their association. YMCA professionals, however, have the responsibility to temper and guide this natural enthusiasm to develop and implement "programs" based on their knowledge of human development needs of the youth in their community …

A Rationale For Enhancing The Role Of The Non-School Voluntary Sector In Youth Development (Paper In Progress), Karen Pittman, Marlene Wright, Geeta Tate Jan 1992

A Rationale For Enhancing The Role Of The Non-School Voluntary Sector In Youth Development (Paper In Progress), Karen Pittman, Marlene Wright, Geeta Tate

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

Growing awareness of the seriousness of youth problems in this country (e.g., substance abuse, delinquency, early pregnancy, early school leaving) and of the magnitude of these problems compared to those experienced by youth in other countries has led policymakers, practitioners, and the general public to agree with the above statement. We, as a society, are not offering something to our young people that we should be. The questions that need to be answered are obvious: What are we doing wrong? How did it happen? How do we change the situation? In the spirit of this concern, we explore in this …

We As Professionals Want The Best For The Future Generation, Jacquelyn Gilbert Jan 1992

We As Professionals Want The Best For The Future Generation, Jacquelyn Gilbert

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

Christine has pointed out what we need in order to make our youth responsible and productive. Based on this information. our youth are in trouble when it comes to their out-of-school activities. Although the data varies according to race, sex. and socioeconomic status. it is still everyone's problem. There are not enough structured activities for the adolescent. I heard her say it is not only important that we provide educational and productive activities for our youth, but that we carefully plan such activities so the adolescent is able to grow. We have a responsibility to assist them in any way …

1992 Uni Youth Leadership Symposium Paper Response, Judy Isaacson Jan 1992

1992 Uni Youth Leadership Symposium Paper Response, Judy Isaacson

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

Let me assure you there is a multitude of information and food for thought in this paper. I could have taken many routes in my response. Yes. we do need a common definition of youth development. Yes, we do need theory and a basis of knowledge about youth development - meeting the needs of youth and development of competencies. And yes, we do need good outcome evaluation. All of these are addressed well in this paper. However, I kept coming back to the statements regarding national youth organizations - the big 20, if you will. Since I represent one of …

Youth Development And Community Programs: Strategies For Applying What We Know (R.J. Mcelroy Lecture), Jane Quinn

The theme of this symposium is Building Practice on Knowledge, and I have been asked to talk with you this evening about one aspect of this challenge - Youth Development and Community Programs: Strategies for Applying What We Know. In my presentation, I will be reporting to you - for the first time in a public forum - the findings of a two-year national study conducted by the Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development and its Task Force on Youth Development and Community Programs. This study has attempted to bring together information about contemporary American youth organizations - broadly defined - …

The Environment And Change: Leadership And The Role Of Middle Management In A Correctional Agency, John M. Menke Jan 1992

The Environment And Change: Leadership And The Role Of Middle Management In A Correctional Agency, John M. Menke

Theses and Graduate Projects

Middle managers possess technical knowledge and awareness important to public policy formulation and environmental interaction, which is a predominant source of change for the organization. As an organization, Hill County Correction Departrnent's bureaucratic structure is ill-suited to respond to its complex and unstable environmen. Yet this structure is explained because HCCD is a public organization directly accountable to external bodies; its services are ambiguously defined and interpreted; and its environment hostile. This structure encourages a reactive rather than proactive position for the organization with the environment. Hierarchical structure, role obligation, and uncertainty promote risk-aversive activities by middle managers through remaining …

Building Youth Serving Programs On Purpose For Iowa's Children, Susan J. Koch Jan 1992

Building Youth Serving Programs On Purpose For Iowa's Children, Susan J. Koch

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

As I reviewed the contents of Skip's paper, and again as I listened today to his thoughtful presentation, there were two initial and rather personal thoughts which came to my mind. One thought is how much I appreciate the services which I and my family receive from Youth Serving Organizations here in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area. All of my children have been involved with Boy and Girl Scouting organizations, recreation programs, and community services. I personally benefit from our beautiful Black Hawk County YMCA almost every day, as that is my workout home. Tom Davis mentioned enabling factors today, as …

Analysis And Recommendations, Robert F. Long Jan 1992

Analysis And Recommendations, Robert F. Long

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

The Institute for Youth Leaders' 1992 National Youth Leadership Symposium contributed to the emerging youth development profession and attending academic discipline through a formal examination of the principles of moving " theory into practice." This theme was selected as the next step in a logical sequence of symposia themes. In 1990 the gathering established agreement on the critical competencies needed in youth development professional practice. The 1991 experience built on the set of competencies with the identification of common ground for professional development among the organizations serving the needs of youth. With agreement on the needed competencies and the common …

Who's In Charge Of U.S. Indian Policy?: Congress And The Supreme Court At Loggerheads Over American Indian Religious Freedom, David E. Wilkins Jan 1992

Who's In Charge Of U.S. Indian Policy?: Congress And The Supreme Court At Loggerheads Over American Indian Religious Freedom, David E. Wilkins

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

The federal government's three branches—executive, legislative, judicial, and that unwieldy mass known simply as "the bureaucracy" have, during the last half-decade—1987-1991—produced a dizzying crop of laws, policies, proclamations, regulations, and court decisions which have served simultaneously to 1) reaffirm tribal sovereignty; 2) permit and encourage greater state interference within Indian Country; 3) enhance federal legislative authority over tribes; and 4) deny constitutional free-exercise protections both to individual Indians and to tribes.

On the legislative side, Congress has established the experimental Tribal Self-Governance Demonstration Project which is a major step towards restoring the tribal right of self-determination, and is discussing the …

Entrepreneurial Leadership: A Delphi Study Of New Venture Success Factors, Alan J. Grant Edd Jan 1992

Entrepreneurial Leadership: A Delphi Study Of New Venture Success Factors, Alan J. Grant Edd

Dissertations

Over a million new U.S. enterprises are formed each year. Virtually all the country's net new jobs come from these and other new ventures. Yet 60% of new ventures still fail within two years. The purpose of this study was to isolate the most dominant leadership success characteristics of a typical early stage, high-growth potential venture. Thus discovered, these factors could properly focus the enterprise's tactics on improving its probability of fulfilling its original success related objectives as well as enhancing new job creation and in turn, economic wealth. A Delphi Technique research methodology was employed. The advice and counsel …

Recognizing the important role of the principal in Saskatchewan Rural school effectiveness, the study addressed the following four questions: 1. Are there significant differences in the behaviors of principals in schools that have been identified as effective compared to those principals in schools that have been identified as noneffective? 2. Are the leadership behaviors as identified by the Leadership Practices Inventory Self and Other (LPI-self and LPI-other) found in a set of Saskatchewan schools? 3. Valuing A Culturally Diverse Work Force: An Examination Of Intended Changes And Successes As Perceived By Upper And Middle Management, Supervisors, And Line Staff In A Health Care Organization, Cynthia L. Camberg Edd

Dissertations

The growing diversity of the work force is having and will continue to have a significant impact on organizations. The diversity of cultures, lifestyles, and household compositions compels managers and organizational leaders to make a variety of organizational changes. Additionally, the globalization of business, the integration of the world economy, and the rapid changes in corporate life require a reexamination of how organizations are thought of, and how employees are managed (Copeland, 1988; Betters-Reed & Moore, 1988-89; Goldstein, 1988). Since in the past organizations have been based on white male European traditions, a revolutionary response is needed from organizational leaders …

Constructing And Testing Practical Procedures For Describing A Corporate Culture: The Electric Troublemen, Timothy S. Vonder Edd Jan 1992

Constructing And Testing Practical Procedures For Describing A Corporate Culture: The Electric Troublemen, Timothy S. Vonder Edd

Dissertations

During the 1980s much attention was focused on trying to understand and apply the concept of corporate culture. Scholars and practitioners worked on clarifying the definition of culture as it applies to workplace settings. Scholars adapted the anthropological concepts of culture to fit within the framework of a business organization. Both scholars and practitioners attempted to investigate the cultures of many organizations throughout the business world. Scholars conducted lengthy case studies and used a mixture of qualitative and quantitative techniques. Business world practitioners conducted short studies and used mostly quantitative survey techniques. What was found was that the scholarly approach …

The Impact Of The Accountability Movement On Principals In A Large Southern California School District, Dianette T. Mitchell Edd Jan 1992

The Impact Of The Accountability Movement On Principals In A Large Southern California School District, Dianette T. Mitchell Edd

Dissertations

Organizations achieve uniqueness in their functions despite similarities in their structure. This uniqueness is true of school districts as well. Though there are specific similarities which have been found in effective schools and districts who have joined the accountability movement, each has its own systematic method of modifying and controlling desired behavior and possible achievement. This research focuses on one unique group of people, the site administrators in a large school district, and seeks to ascertain the effects of the effective schools' accountability movement as seen from the perspective of school principals. The three major objectives of this study were …
