An Evaluation Of Student Perceptions Of Academic Advising In A Rn/Bsn Distance Educational Nursing Program, Barbara A. Trent Edd

Dissertations

Over the past decade, RN/BSN programs have gained popularity across the nation with an emphasis upon structural flexibility and/or adult student learning principles. Research has shown a positive association between advisement and decreased attrition rates for this unique student body. The purpose of this research was to determine from the perception of students enrolled in a RN/BSN educational program, the importance of advisement in relation to three elements: functions, outcomes and advisor style. It was also the purpose to determine if these three elements had either been provided, achieved or employed, respectively, by their advisors. An evaluative design was used …

Internal Tribal Fragmentation: An Examination Of A Normative Model Of Democratic Decision-Making, David E. Wilkins

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

A recent commentary by Gerald A. Alfred in the spring 1991 edition of the Northeast Indian Quarterly dealt with a subject matter which is either ignored or radically exaggerated when it is broached in Indian Country: political fragmentation (or segments or cleavages) and ideological conflict within North American Indian tribes and the ramifications of such internal conflict on tribal identity.

This paper, after restating Alfred's major points about Mohawk segmentation at Kahnawake, describes and then analyzes a viable alternative democratic decision-making model which has been specifically designed to address the problems of how not only to restore, but also to …

The Limits Of Natural Law: Thomas Rutherforth And The American Legal Tradition, Gary L. Mcdowell Jan 1992

The Limits Of Natural Law: Thomas Rutherforth And The American Legal Tradition, Gary L. Mcdowell

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

The history of American constitutional jurisprudence has been marked by a persistent fascination with the idea of natural law. This springs first and foremost from the fact that we understand as our constitutional foundation those “laws of Nature and of Nature’s God” to which Thomas Jefferson made such eloquent appeal in the Declaration of Independence. Further, American politics since the founding of the republic has been characterized by a commitment, with more or less success, to the simple truth James Madison posited in The Federalist. “Justice,” Madison declared, “is the end of government. It is the end of civil …

The Impact Of An Integrated Study Skills Program On University Of La Verne Adult Undergraduates At Vandenberg Air Force Base And Naval Air Station North Island, Pamela Priest Edd

Dissertations

The Problem: There have been a number of recent attempts to provide unique educational opportunities in learning strategies and study skills for adult students. A difficulty in removing the student from the classroom to provide this specialized training is that many students are unable to transfer the acquired skills back into a variety of different contexts. A second problem is removing faculty from the ongoing class and educating them in workshops that address learning strategies and study skills. Many faculty find it difficult to incorporate these skills while meeting the demands of fulfilling course content objectives. The Research: The purpose …

This research addresses the nature of leadership. Reflecting a sound theoretical base, the researcher studied the people involved in a complex change process, and listened to their perceptions about change and leadership. The study goes beyond the idea of the individual leader into the notion of a leadership relationship. It is a study of the persons who were active in the relationship, a study of their behaviors and language as they changed how the county government served the public. One of the primary purposes of the study is to demonstrate how these insights regarding change and the nature of leadership …

What system of organization is actually employed in the churches of Christ? Is change required?

In order to answer these questions, the study was initiated with an overview of the history of Argentina and …

When you are preaching to the choir, you know that you are dealing with people who already care. I suspect that much of what you will hear from me today will be things you already know. But as Mary Montie Bacon, a brilliant educator from the California peer helping movement says, "there's some things even the choir needs to hear. That no matter how good we are, how committed we are, even the choir needs to rehearse the tunes, to come together every once in a while to re-inspire one another ....... to re-commit to some of the principles we …

Analysis And Recommendations, Robert F. Long

They addressed specific points of concern to the youth development professionals, including the major problems facing youth, the professional development training needs, and the training needs that might be addressed because of limited financial resources. The roundtable group set the stage for the Symposium discussions that took place the following day. The many and variety perspectives the group brought to the issues in question provided …

What Shaped My Life And Career (Lecture Response), Susan Hanzelka Jan 1991

What Shaped My Life And Career (Lecture Response), Susan Hanzelka

National Youth Leadership Symposium Monographs

"What shaped my life to make it my desire to work with kids? I'd have to say, my parents and my family inspired me. My childhood was a time of fun, imagination, friends, responsibility, and respect. I see a lack of these components in the lives of children, today, which drives me. Christine Kwak said we need to shift our thinking of youth as problems to youth as resources, or partners. But before we can say that youth are truly our partners, we must include one detrimentally important facet - COMMUNICATION with our youth!

One such organization is the Campus Crusade for Christ International. This researcher examined the leadership training program of Campus Crusade's Great Commission Training Center (GCTC) in Manila, Philippines by asking nine research questions arising from "How is training for leadership presently incorporated into the GCTC curricula?" A questionnaire was designed incorporating the characteristics …

The subjects were 284 coeducational students from four ethnic backgrounds that attended three middle schools in San Diego.
