Oil. Geopolitics Reborn: Oil, Natural Gas, And Other Vital Resources, Michael T. Klare

New England Journal of Public Policy

Competition over vital resources is a potent source of international friction among nations and within states. The result is the increasing interplay of international and internal struggles and the growing militarization of the global energy resource quest.

Oil. Changing Geopolitics Of Oil In Asia & The Usa, Jay Hein, John Clark, Robert Ebel, Dong Hyung Cha, Richard Lotspeich Jul 2007

Oil. Changing Geopolitics Of Oil In Asia & The Usa, Jay Hein, John Clark, Robert Ebel, Dong Hyung Cha, Richard Lotspeich

New England Journal of Public Policy

One of the most important responsibilities the United States assumed following World War II was ensuring the stable flow of relatively inexpensive oil to the industrialized and industrializing countries of the world. A glance at a list of the top petroleum exporting countries shows that most of them are poor, have despotic governments, and experience frequent bouts of political instability and ideological extremism.

Monetary Policy And Inflation In The European Monetary Union – Perspectives And Lessons, Lucjan T. Orlowski Jun 2007

Monetary Policy And Inflation In The European Monetary Union – Perspectives And Lessons, Lucjan T. Orlowski

WCBT Faculty Publications

The paper examines systemic changes in monetary policies in Europe that have played a pivotal role in containing inflation. It emphasizes the connection between the systemic evolution of monetary policies and the precepts of the original as well as the new generation policy models prescribed by the ‘Washington Consensus’. It further underscores the importance of key criteria of optimum currency area (labor mobility, trade openness, symmetric consumer preferences and political integration) for viability and further future enlargement of the euro area. For the candidates to the euro flexible inflation targeting policies that encompass the euro-convergence parameters are suggested.

Measurement Of The Market Data For The Ocean And Coastal Economy, Charles S. Colgan

Publications

This paper supplements reports and data released on the Coastal and Ocean Economies of the United States by the NOEP. It provides a discussion of the relevant literature involved in the investigation of the Ocean and Coastal related Economies, the theoretical background of measures such as gross domestic product (GDP) and gross state product (GSP), and provides details on sources, methods, assumptions, and limitations of the data provided by NOEP.

Those concerned with the health of coastal and ocean resources increasingly need to understand the socio-economic context in which changes are occurring. The market data of the National Ocean Economics …

Immigrant-Trade Links, Transplanted Home Bias And Network Effects, Roger White Apr 2007

Immigrant-Trade Links, Transplanted Home Bias And Network Effects, Roger White

Economics

Macro-level data for the US and 73 trading partners spanning the years 1980 to 2001 is used with a gravity specification to investigate the influence of immigration on bilateral trade. Prior research has identified immigrant stocks as a significant determinant of trade; however, this study indicates that the US immigrant-trade link is driven by immigration from relatively low income countries. A 10% increase in the immigrant stock is found to generate respectively 4.7 and 1.5% increases in domestic imports from and exports to the typical low income home country. The observed link is decomposed into two hypothesized channels – network …

India’S Unlikely Democracy: Economic Growth And Political Accommodation, Aseema Sinha Apr 2007

India’S Unlikely Democracy: Economic Growth And Political Accommodation, Aseema Sinha

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

There is no doubt that India’s democracy has become stable, yet economic change could create distributional conflicts and stresses on its democratic institutions. Economic change and liberalization have served to reinforce and further stabilize democracy rather than undermining it. This has happened partly because of the nature of economic and social transition, which has allowed the rich many options in the private, urban, and global economy. Simultaneously, the poor are divided and seek redress through electoral and democratic channels. Weak coalition governments in the 1990s have responded to claims from the poor contributing to the continuing stability of Indian democracy.

The Impact Of Privatization On Economic Growth And Income Inequality In Developing Countries, Samuel Adams Apr 2007

The Impact Of Privatization On Economic Growth And Income Inequality In Developing Countries, Samuel Adams

School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations

In the 1960s and 1970s academicians, economists and politicians favored state ownership over private ownership in the production and provision of goods and services. By the end of the 1980s, however, there was a reversal of public policy from state domination of the production and provision of goods and services to private ownership and operation. This was due in part to what the World Bank referred to as "state failure”, which was characterized by inefficient service delivery, unprofitable SOEs, high government debt, and stagnant economic growth rates. Accordingly, privatization caught on in many countries as a policy tool to foster …

Trade Agreements With Domestic Policies As Disguised Protection, Gea Myoung Lee Mar 2007

Trade Agreements With Domestic Policies As Disguised Protection, Gea Myoung Lee

Research Collection School Of Economics

WTO rules prohibit “disguised protection” in the form of domestic policies. How then do governments cooperate over trade and domestic policies when none can verify whether a nation's domestic tax reduction is a protective measure or a reaction to a production externality? In this paper, each government privately observes whether a production externality associated with its import-competing good is high or low. This paper finds that in an optimal agreement, disguised protection with domestic policies is never used by governments with a high externality, and is never commonly realized. Moreover, in an optimal agreement, tariffs may be conditional on domestic …

Reflections On A Seminal Force In International Accounting, Karen Cascini Feb 2007

Reflections On A Seminal Force In International Accounting, Karen Cascini

WCBT Faculty Publications

Accounting is a manifestation of several important environmental factors within a country, including economic, educational and political, and, as such, is evolutionary in accordance with those changing social structures. In today‟s ever expanding global economy, the understanding of international aspects of accounting is critical to understanding world events and the way in which they affect our lives. As new nations and new economic powers emerge, continually updated information, including accounting information, is an essential resource for linking an internal accounting system with worldwide systems. Because of the major impact that international accounting has had on countries‟ internal accounting systems, it …

Competition Law And The Wto: Rethinking The Relationship, David J. Gerber Jan 2007

Competition Law And The Wto: Rethinking The Relationship, David J. Gerber

All Faculty Scholarship

This essay identifies obstacles to the inclusion of a competition law regime in the WTO and suggests changes that are likely to be necessary if competition law is to become an effective part of the WTO. Two obstacles have impeded inclusion of competition law in the WTO's legal regime and are likely to continue to do so. They are (i) a lack of confidence that the norms, practices and procedures of the WTO rest on a robust conception of community and (ii) uncertainty and concern about what form of competition law might be included and what its role in the …

What Can Industry Trade Orientation Tell Us About Trade-Related Employment Dynamics?, Roger White Jan 2007

What Can Industry Trade Orientation Tell Us About Trade-Related Employment Dynamics?, Roger White

Economics

We explore whether imports and exports affect industry employment differently based on the industry’s trade orientation. Effects of trade are examined for both production and non-production employment using data for 384 6-digit manufacturing industries, classified by the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS), and 116 trading partners that span the years 1972 to 2001. Additionally, we consider potential employment effects stemming from shifts in import sources from high- to low-income nations. The findings confirm theory and provide a more detailed portrait of trade-related employment dynamics. As the United States further liberalizes trade, net job loss may be expected in more …

What Is Ailing The German Economy? A Critical Analysis Of German Social Market Economics, Robert T. Cheek Jr. Jan 2007

What Is Ailing The German Economy? A Critical Analysis Of German Social Market Economics, Robert T. Cheek Jr.

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper offers a narrative historical description of the German Social Market Economy, from its inception following World War II, up to the recent Agenda 2010 reforms enacted under the administration of Chancellor Gerhard Schroder. It is the purpose of this work to explore why the German Social Market System enjoyed such a high degree of success in its early years, and which flaws might be causing the chronic problems of low growth and high unemployment that have plagued Germany more recently. In particular, the paper argues that a high-cost and highly inflexible labor market resulting from Germany's system of …

Periodically Collapsing Bubbles In The Asian Emerging Stock Markets, Ako Doffou Jan 2007

Periodically Collapsing Bubbles In The Asian Emerging Stock Markets, Ako Doffou

WCBT Faculty Publications

This paper investigates empirically the existence of periodically collapsing bubbles in the Asian emerging stock markets using the Enders-Siklos (2001) momentum threshold autoregressive model. As explained in Bohl (2003), this non-linear time series technique can be used to analyze bubble driven run-ups in stock prices followed by a crash in a non- cointegration framework with asymmetric adjustment. This technique offers a more potent insight in the stock prices behavior than can possibly be obtained using conventional non-cointegration tests. The empirical findings for ten Asian emerging stock markets from 1993 to 2005 refute the bubble hypothesis.

Monetary And Fiscal Policy In Poland During The Eu Accession, Lucjan Orlowski Jan 2007

Monetary And Fiscal Policy In Poland During The Eu Accession, Lucjan Orlowski

WCBT Faculty Publications

The main objective of this chapter is to review the fiscal and monetary policies of Poland for EU accession and to extract their guiding precepts. Only the most essential aspects of fiscal and monetary convergence are examined, with some attention to institutional convergence. An in-depth analysis of institutional convergence falls beyond the boundaries of this study, as its main focus is on the systemic foundations of macroeconomic stabilization policies during the economic transition and in the course of preparations for EU accession. The chapter also examines policy options for the post-accession macroeconomic policy strategy which will focus on preparations for …

The Extended Heckscher-Ohlin Model: Patterns Of Trade Between The U.S. And China, Mark Clements Jan 2007

The Extended Heckscher-Ohlin Model: Patterns Of Trade Between The U.S. And China, Mark Clements

Undergraduate Economic Review

Though there have been many attempts to extend the Heckscher-Ohlin model in order to account for empirical data, I intend to examine John Romalis’ model of factor proportions and commodity structure. The purpose of this paper is to examine Romalis’ model to see if it is supported by empirical data on trade between China and the United States. In order to do this, I will use data from the 2000 and 2005 U.S. Census trade data CD-ROM to determine if Romalis’ extended Hecksher-Ohlin model of international trade can explain the U.S.-China pattern of trade.

Estimating Regional Trade Agreement Effects On Fdi In An Interdependent World, Badi H. Baltagi, Peter Egger, Michael Pfaffermayr Jan 2007

Estimating Regional Trade Agreement Effects On Fdi In An Interdependent World, Badi H. Baltagi, Peter Egger, Michael Pfaffermayr

Center for Policy Research

Recent research on trade and multinationals highlights a novel issue with multinational firms. In particular, their integration strategies are complex and the degree of vertical integration varies in a multilateral world with many possible locations of activity. Multinationals may choose some plants to serve consumers locally only, whereas others engage in trade. Overall, this may explain the fact that a high percentage of world trade is actually controlled by multinational firms, although most of the foreign direct investment (FDI) occurs within the block of developed countries. The most important regional trade agreements (RTAs) are signed between members of the very …

Foreign Direct Investment(Fdi) Inflows To Asean Member Countries: Problems And Prospects, Rosalina Palanca-Tan Jan 2007

Foreign Direct Investment(Fdi) Inflows To Asean Member Countries: Problems And Prospects, Rosalina Palanca-Tan

Economics Department Faculty Publications

FDI has played an important part in the industrialization and growth experience of ASEAN countries. The growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of ASEAN as a whole is strongly correlated with inflows of FDIs in the region. The share of ASEAN in global FDI inflows is disproportionately larger than its share in global GDP. About 5% of total world FDI went to ASEAN member countries during the period 1980-2005 while the region accounted for less than 2% of world GDP. This reflects the perceived attractiveness of ASEAN member countries as FDI hosts. Global firms were initially attracted by favorable conditions …

Japan Pakistan Economic Relations: Challenges And Opportunities From Japan’S New Economy, Seiji Kojima Jan 2007

Japan Pakistan Economic Relations: Challenges And Opportunities From Japan’S New Economy, Seiji Kojima

Business Review

I have various reasons to discuss the economic relations between Japan and Pakistan today. First, one of the most important and urgent tasks that the Pakistani Government faces is of course to achieve a robust and stable economic growth, thereby enabling to eradicate poverty from this country. As the largest bilateral donor and a major trade partner of Pakistan, it would be quite natural for Japan to place importance on the economic aspect of the relations with Pakistan. Second, this is an institute of business administration, and I imagine that the audience will show interest in the economic side of …

Odious, Not Debt, Anna Gelpern Jan 2007

Odious, Not Debt, Anna Gelpern

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article argues that the doctrine of Odious Debt, which has enjoyed a revival since the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003, frames the problem of odious debt in a way that excludes most of the problematic obligations incurred by twentieth-century despots. Advocacy and academic literature traditionally describe the odious debt problem as one of government contracts with private creditors. Most theories of sovereign debt key off the same relationship. But in the latest crop of cases, including Iraq, Liberia, and Nigeria, private creditors represent a small fraction of the old regime's debts. Most of the creditors are other governments …

Financial Reforms And Common Stochastic Trends In International Stock Prices: A Case Study Of Pakistan, Mohammed Nishat, Ch. Muhammad Irfan Jan 2007

Financial Reforms And Common Stochastic Trends In International Stock Prices: A Case Study Of Pakistan, Mohammed Nishat, Ch. Muhammad Irfan

Business Review

This study uses the co-integration and error-correction techniques to examine the linkages between Pakistan and other capital markets of developed economies (US, UK, Japan, Australia and Canada); regional markets in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka), East Asia (Indonesia, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Philippines) and EU (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy and Czech) countries. The results indicate a long-run relationship between Pakistani stock market and most of the international markets during the sample period (1997 to 2004). However, the longrun linkages were comparatively stronger with developed and EU markets. The direction of linkages in most cases, are from other regional …

A Monetary Union In East Asia: What Does The Common Cycles Approach Tell?, K Sato, David E. Allen, Zhaoyong Zhang Jan 2007

A Monetary Union In East Asia: What Does The Common Cycles Approach Tell?, K Sato, David E. Allen, Zhaoyong Zhang

Research outputs pre 2011

There is controversy about whether a monetary union is feasible in the East Asian region. Amongst the criteria for establishing a monetary union, most of the existing studies focus on the symmetric issue of fundamental shocks and the extent of correlations by applying the Blanchard and Quah (1989) structural vector autoregression (VAR) technique, which includes the firstdifferenced variables in the model and examines only bilateral relationships. When forming a monetary union, the member countries need to renounce their monetary policy autonomy. If shocks to respective economies are symmetric, the cost of relinquishing the discretionary monetary policy is likely to be …

Poverty Reduction: An Evaluation Of Micro Finance And Foreign Aid, Wade Summers Jan 2007

Poverty Reduction: An Evaluation Of Micro Finance And Foreign Aid, Wade Summers

Honors Program Theses

Over the last 50 years, the United States has been pouring money into foreign aid, yet this aid has failed to bring the poor out of poverty. Micro finance institutions claim to they are able to increase the wealth of the poor. This paper will compare micro finance's ability to alleviate poverty against traditional uses of foreign aid. The results of this paper are while the profitability of micro finance is not clear, independent studies indicate that it has been successful in bringing the poor out of poverty. This paper concludes that micro finance should receive a larger portion of …

Wal-Mart Bank In Mexico: Money To The Masses And The Home-Host Hole, Anna Gelpern Jan 2007

Wal-Mart Bank In Mexico: Money To The Masses And The Home-Host Hole, Anna Gelpern

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In November 2006 Wal-Mart's Mexican subsidiary received approval to open a bank. The application faced little opposition in Mexico, unlike the company's failed effort to start a bank in the United States. This was partly because in Mexico, Wal-Mart's entry was generally regarded as increasing competition in a historically concentrated banking sector. With over three-quarters of all Mexicans unbanked, the authorities also looked to Wal-Mart to reach the underserved. Along with the promise, Wal-Mart's entry presents a transnational regulatory dilemma with implications beyond Wal-Mart and Mexico. Because it is Wal-Mart's only banking venture, the new institution will have its Mexican …

Cuba's De-Dollarization Program: Policy Measures, Main Objectives, And Principal Motivations, Mario A. Gonzalez-Corzo Dec 2006

Cuba's De-Dollarization Program: Policy Measures, Main Objectives, And Principal Motivations, Mario A. Gonzalez-Corzo

Publications and Research

This paper examines the main characteristics of Cuba’s de-dollarization program, the objectives of these policy measures, and their principal causes and motivations. The paper is organized in three sections. The first section describes the policy measures associated with the process of de-dollarization, followed by a detailed account of their main objectives (section two), and an analysis of their principal causes and motivations (section three).
