The relationship between immigration and technological growth is more nuanced than a simple statement of positive or negative correlation. How one affects the other varies depending on the skill level of the immigrant and the field where they work. Conclusions drawn by the literature form patterns that can be used to best understand the relationship between immigration and technology. High-skilled immigration boosts technological development through a complementary relationship, but low-skilled immigration can be a complement or a substitute with technological growth depending on the sector. This paper presents an ex-ante impact assessment of a hypothetical FTA between Egypt and the BRICS from an Egyptian economy-wide and sectorial perspectives, with a granular look into manufacturing. The chosen methodology is a static SAM-based Computable General Equilibrium model calibrated to Egypt’s 2018-2019 Social Accounting Matrix (SAM). In this dissertation I study the relationship between trade and economic growth, with a focus on developing economies. I specifically provide a critical review of the consensus view in trade and growth, according to which a liberal trade regime is generally the best policy stance to promote growth. In the first essay of this dissertation, I provide evidence that the relationship between trade policy and growth may depend on economic structure: tariff reductions are followed by higher levels of GDP per capita for manufacturer countries, but lower levels for nonmanufacturers. How Global Value Chains Affect Economic Output And Unemployment: An Empirical Evidence From Asean Countries, Sri Juli Asdiyanti Samuda

This paper examines the effects of Global Value Chains on economic output and unemployment in ten ASEAN countries from 1999 to 2018. This study provides estimation using the system GMM and panel causality test to determine the effect of GVC thoroughly. The results indicate a positive and significant effect of global value chains on economic output in ASEAN countries. However, the findings also show that global value chains increase unemployment during the observation period. Heterogenous panel non-causality findings suggest that economic output does not affect the level of participation of GVC, but unemployment affects the level of participation in ten …

In this paper I explore the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and deforestation in Cambodia. Through an event study framework, I show that economic land concessions have a negative relationship with tree cover, over time, having stronger and stronger negative effects. This relationship is more pronounced in foreign economic land concessions when compared to domestic economic land concessions. Through the use of a difference in differences research design I examine the relationship between foreign and domestic concessions through the implementation of a ELC concession ban. The first chapter of this dissertation studies the role of human capital in generating economic convergence through its impact on manufacturing productivity growth and allocation of labor across sectors of the economy. I confirm and extend existing results showing that productivity in manufacturing – unlike its economy-wide counterpart – has exhibited convergence; that is, countries further behind the technology frontier tend to catch up to those on the frontier. I then show that the convergence in manufacturing is (a) somewhat accelerated by countries’ tertiary education levels and (b) faster in high-tech industries. Although hosting professional sports are often seen as a financial benefit for cities, there are also associated costs. This paper investigates the possibility of interdependence between a variety of crimes and home game days of the Boston Red Sox. When adjusting for game attendance and length, minor assaults charges such as disorderly conduct and simple assault increase city-wide during game days. Despite this, all crime around the immediate stadium area decreases in volume. Additionally, this study examines differences in geographical impacts and crime levels, when a game was played, and games played against the New York Yankees, their historic rival.

This study explores the relationship between cultural attitudes and national GDP growth, across several countries. Data from the World Values Survey from the 2010 through 2014 and 2005-2009 wave have been utilized to determine cultural attitudes, and data from the World Bank and USAID has been utilized for building the economic growth model. This study used linear regression analysis to inspect influence of unemployment rates and economic development levels on income inequality in the United States and Germany. The results indicate that the level of economic development is the main driving factor for inequality of income in America, while in Germany, high unemployment and inflation can exacerbate income inequality. This study emphasizes the importance of labor market policies, social welfare policies, and tax policies in reducing income inequality. This research paper examines the impact of specific crime types on property values in urban areas. Using a dataset of property sales and crime data from several cities in Massachusetts, a regression analysis is applied to estimate the effect of different crime types on property values. This research paper examines the determinants of revenue for National Football League (NFL) franchises with respect to ticket prices. Using a dataset of ticket prices and various factors such as team performance, stadium capacity, market size, and team revenue, we analyze the relationship between ticket prices and a franchise’s revenue. The results align with past studies in this area of research as they indicate that past team performance and average attendance have the strongest effect on ticket prices.
