International Labour Migration: The Missing Link In Globalization, Piyasiri Wickramasekara

The paper analyzes the linkages between globalization and international mobility of people and labour, and concludes that labour migration is the missing link in globalization. It highlights that recent trends in labour mobility across borders hardly match optimistic rhetoric on migration and development and transnationalism at the international level. This paper briefly reviews recent trends in international mobility, particularly of workers, and reviews evidence and causes of mounting barriers to mobility. It discusses the emerging areas of convergence and divergence on policy and institutional options to optimize migration of labour for the welfare of the global economy.

The current paper reviews impacts of trade liberalization on developing countries and levels of poverty. The expected impacts of multilateral trade liberalization on wage levels and subsequent poverty are implored. This paper investigates water use in a rural village in semi-arid of Darfur region. Water use is viewed from the perspective of four production sectors: agriculture, rural industry, trade and services as well as domestic: drinking, cooking and sanitary uses. Water for these uses may be from three sources: rain water, surface water, and groundwater. This study focuses on groundwater. Results of a detailed survey indicate that groundwater use is dominated by agricultural activities including irrigated vegetables and grains, tree crops, and animal rearing. The aim of present paper is to examine the role of financial development on FDI-Growth nexus using annual data over the period of 1975-2008. The results show that financial development is playing its role well but not satisfactory. This study will provide new guidelines for policy making authorities for Portuguese's economy. The manuscript applies the unrestricted error correction model (ECM) estimator advanced by Inder (1993) while ARDL bounds testing approach is employed to find cointegration among variables. This paper seeks to analyze the presence of long memory in the Indian foreign exchange market using a family of tests. The study has used Nominal Effective Exchange Rate (NEER) series as the data source to check the possible presence of long memory. Three R/S statistics viz. Hurst, Mandelbrot’s and Lo’s modified R/S statistics as well as two semi-parametric tests viz. Robinson’s Gaussian semi-parametric estimate and Andrews-Guggenberger modified GPH estimator are used for the purpose of analysis. All the results conclusively prove the presence of strong version of long memory in the Indian foreign exchange market.
