California’s three public higher education systems (University of California, California State University, the California Community College System) enroll nearly 3 million undergraduate students and employ almost 100 thousand faculty. In 2012, the California State Legislature directed the three systems to create an online library of open educational resources to encourage the use of free or affordable textbooks and other materials throughout California’s public higher education system. Ignition grant, decided to jump into the fray by creating the Open Access Course Reserves. It is a publicly available, curated repository that provides ready-made reading lists of free, copyright compliant (open access when possible), educational materials. Today's students need to locate, use and share information in myriad formats; they need to be ICT (information and communication technology) literacy. The CSU system has started an ICT Literacy Initiative to build out the MERLOT collection of ICT literacy learning objects, and to help faculty integrate ICT literacy into their curricula. California State University's (CSU) Affordable Learning Solutions initiative has produced a number of system-wide strategies, technologies and campus-based programs that are driving down the cost of course materials for students while offering greater access to no-cost or low-cost academic content for instructional faculty. In this presentation, Dr. Hanley, Assistant Vice Chancellor at California State University, Chancellor's Office, will focus on the variety of free resources to support teaching and learning via the CSU’s Affordable Learning Solutions initiative. The different deployment strategies used by CSU campuses will be showcased and approaches to motivating faculty and administration will be discussed.

Embedding Affordable Learning Solutions Into The Academic Senate, Aline Soules

Embedding the Affordable Learning Solutions (ALS) into the Academic Senate provides a forum and a platform for promoting ALS to and with faculty. At Cal State East Bay, ALS is now a Subcommittee of the Committee on Instruction and Curriculum (CIC) with representation from key constituencies, including a faculty representative from each College and the Library. Recommendations and suggestions can now be routed through CIC to the full Senate. The brief lightning round presentation will explain the process of creating the subcommittee and describe the benefits and challenges the Subcommittee has experienced to date.

Librarians across library types and departments frequently provide training materials to each other, library technicians, and student workers. For these materials to be effective, they must contain accurate information and should also follow guidelines for usable document design. Good design makes documents easier to use, helps documents stand out from other pieces of information, and lends credibility to document creators. A few simple tips, such as following Gestalt principles and using plain language, can improve document usability. Therefore, when the consolidation of the two institutions of Kennesaw State University and Southern Polytechnic State University was announced, their respective interlibrary loan departments rose to the challenge with - if not enthusiasm - optimism and the willingness to try new ideas and strategies to merge the two units. Reports on self-estimated life satisfaction and religiosity (present and future projected) in different populations of Mexican university students. Student levels of life satisfaction were comparable to the national norms (Mitofsky) but were lower than the national norms for religiosity. Unlike in the U.S., there was no correlation between religiosity and life satisfaction. Students in a gerontology program showed higher levels of religiosity than those in another university.

With the trend moving toward universities developing their own institutional repositories (IRs), the need to educate and empower the campus to embrace this new space for publishing research has grown exponentially. This session will provide a background on open access and IRs, including the many benefits and complex issues, as well as an overview of the scholarly communication crisis and the importance of authors’ rights education. The session will go on to provide practical examples and guidance from several pilot projects launched at Arcadia University that emphasized open access education and participation.

Open access within legal academia provides a case study for the effective use of digital formats to promote scholarship. The presenters review the background historical developments in this field, and consider the benefits and rationales for providing open access to legal scholarship, including the special faculty concerns arising from SSRN and its relationship to the institutional repository. Results from the presenters’ recent empirical study of the citation advantage for open access scholarship in American law reviews will be discussed and placed in broader context of the benefits of open access scholarship.
