Large-scale panoramic displays designed for collaboration can change users’ perspective and reframe and amplify digital content in a shared pixel space. Many universities have implemented large-scale displays, but they are often in areas that restrict access to the equipment and require staff mediation for use. Additionally, dedicated staff may be required to program content for the walls, limiting the variety of content displayed. The current scholarly communication system has developed over centuries; yet, more recently it has been breaking down. Different disciplines have diagnosed this as an economic breakdown between libraries and publishers, a social failure among academics, and as a technological disruption. Of course, all of these answers are true to some degree. By combining approaches from information science and history, it may be possible to understand scholarly communication system more clearly. Is the lower level of reported religiosity among Millennials an enduring trend or a developmental phase? Four studies are reviewed (two in Southern California, two in Mexico). In the U.S. samples, students predicted higher future levels of religiosity for themselves.

Religiosidad Y Felicidad En Alumnos Universitarios: ¿Es Mejor Trabajar Con Los Ancianos?, T. L. Brink

Reports on self-estimated life satisfaction and religiosity (present and future projected) in different populations of Mexican university students. Student levels of life satisfaction were comparable to the national norms (Mitofsky) but were lower than the national norms for religiosity. Unlike in the U.S., there was no correlation between religiosity and life satisfaction. Students in a gerontology program showed higher levels of religiosity than those in another university.

Open access within legal academia provides a case study for the effective use of digital formats to promote scholarship. The presenters review the background historical developments in this field, and consider the benefits and rationales for providing open access to legal scholarship, including the special faculty concerns arising from SSRN and its relationship to the institutional repository. Results from the presenters’ recent empirical study of the citation advantage for open access scholarship in American law reviews will be discussed and placed in broader context of the benefits of open access scholarship.

Despite a rebound in enrollments, men of color and women remain underrepresented in computing. The literature indicates that student-student interaction and affinity for the computing major are important factors for retention of underrepresented groups in computing, and learning communities connect students with each other and faculty to improve collaboration, interaction, enthusiasm. Despite their long history and promise for addressing retention, computing-focused learning communities remain rare. Here we present an evaluation of a linked-courses learning community for men of color and women majoring in a development-focused area of computing. This presentation summarizes the latest findings from Cognitive Neuroscience as pertains to Attachment theory, with an emphasis on the literature from 2012 to 2014. It then explores the linkages in the neuroscience literature between attachment theory and mentalization, particularly in the areas of cognitive and emotional mentalization. Implications of the findings are considered, with an emphasis on the application of the findings for emotional regulation in the life of the counselor as well as for psychological and spiritual intervention in the lives of the counselee.

In 2013, an online information literacy skills course was implemented for two core courses (English Composition II and Strategies for Success) at a large research university. This short online unit, Introduction to Library Research Strategies, is offered via the campus learning management system, Canvas. It can be used as a replacement for face-to-face instruction, or as a pre-assignment to “flip” library instruction. Now two years into the project, we will examine our instruction statistics to see how it has impacted the program overall. Results from an instructor survey and a librarian survey will also be reviewed.

Previous work has shown that factors such as student engagement and involvement can impact progress for computer science majors. One promising approach for improving student engagement is learning communities, which have a long history in academia but are relatively uncommon in computing. In this article we describe a linked-courses learning community for women and men of color majoring in development-focused computing degrees. We provide logistical information about the first offering of the learning community and assess the effectiveness of the community via a student survey.
