Open Your Research Without Opening Your Wallet, Janelle L. Wertzberger

Open scholarship promotes sharing and collaboration, increases readership, and amplifies impact. It is gaining traction as institutions, professional associations, and funding agencies encourage or require broad sharing of research results. Yet many authors believe that the only way to open their work is to pay publishers thousands of dollars for the privilege. Luckily for us, that just isn’t the case. Come hear about a range of ways to open your research without paying for the privilege! Lunch provided. (Limited seating, RSVP to jwertzbe@gettysburg.edu)

Large-scale panoramic displays designed for collaboration can change users’ perspective and reframe and amplify digital content in a shared pixel space. Many universities have implemented large-scale displays, but they are often in areas that restrict access to the equipment and require staff mediation for use. Additionally, dedicated staff may be required to program content for the walls, limiting the variety of content displayed. This presentation covers efforts at the libraries at Georgia State University and the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill to implement immersive display technologies that allow unmediated patron access and reduce the amount of staff …

Is the lower level of reported religiosity among Millennials an enduring trend or a developmental phase? Four studies are reviewed (two in Southern California, two in Mexico). In the U.S. samples, students predicted higher future levels of religiosity for themselves.

Reports on self-estimated life satisfaction and religiosity (present and future projected) in different populations of Mexican university students. Student levels of life satisfaction were comparable to the national norms (Mitofsky) but were lower than the national norms for religiosity. Unlike in the U.S., there was no correlation between religiosity and life satisfaction. Students in a gerontology program showed higher levels of religiosity than those in another university.

Open access within legal academia provides a case study for the effective use of digital formats to promote scholarship. The presenters review the background historical developments in this field, and consider the benefits and rationales for providing open access to legal scholarship, including the special faculty concerns arising from SSRN and its relationship to the institutional repository. Results from the presenters’ recent empirical study of the citation advantage for open access scholarship in American law reviews will be discussed and placed in broader context of the benefits of open access scholarship.

Countermessaging Isis: Grusin's Premediation And The Curious Case Of Islamic State (Ppt Presentation), Athina Karatzogianni
Athina Karatzogianni
Research on reporting war and security has benefited greatly form Grusin's Premediation: Affect and Mediality After 9/11 (2010). Here I employ his concepts in combination with my own cyberconflict theory to examine the mediatization of Islamic State in the social media battleground. Deliberation, propaganda, recruitment and mobilization through social media networks on the Islamic State (IS) by the various protagonists, including IS itself, point to a construction of discourse in commercial platforms which creates ethical issues surrounding security, surveillance and problems government and commercial actors face in responding to the group's media activities. Premediation on the part of all parties …

At Kent State, we work on Digital Commons all times of day so communication is important. We utilize many of bepress’s built-in features to facilitate this. Based on our conversations with other Digital Commons institutional repository managers, many of Digital Commons’ built-in features are not used or not used to their fullest potential. We are moving toward taking full advantage of built-in features in our workflow and hope to push beyond what is available and to suggest enhancements from bepress. We aim to use built-in features for training, internal communication within our team, external communication with authors and rights holders, …

Archivists are depicted in many different forms of pop culture, including books, television and films. These representations help shape how the world views archivists and situates the profession on the archival horizon. Building upon previous research in this area, this study aims to investigate how archivists are portrayed in film. Films involving archivists were selected and a content analysis of these films was conducted to address the following questions: is there an archivist in the film and how is the character portrayed? Is there a clear image of archivists portrayed in the films? How do these images affect how the …
