In 2009, the University of Iowa Libraries began to implement significant changes to services as a direct result of budget reductions. This session will describe the process of combining 2 major and 2 minor service points in the Main library and how services have changed, one year later. While our users have adapted to this one service point, this change has had its own challenges and accomplishments so come to this session to learn pointers on how to merge successfully or share your own success stories!

A panel of interlibrary loan (ILL) practitioners from institutions experienced in international ILL will discuss how they have overcome problems encountered with international lending and borrowing using strategies applicable to all types and sizes of institutions. Learn how ILLiad can be used to find requests from users citing databases but not connecting through our link resolver (SFX) to submit an interlibrary loan request. With this information, users can be contacted so that future requesting can be done more efficiently and faster. Things to learn: How to do advanced searching in ILLiad as well as learn about different ways to educate users about interlibrary loan service via a faster and more accurate mechanism – the link resolver. OCLC Knowledge Base and direct requesting will also be discussed.

Local Holdings Maintenance In Oclc: How Cataloging Practices Can Benefit Interlibrary Loan, Amy R. Paulus

Filtering and auto-deflection are OCLC capabilities that have been available although perhaps not well used yet in the interlibrary loan community. The University of Iowa have identified several collections that do not circulate and edit these cataloging records individually to filter requests, since the policy directory can not be used to deflect these. These collections include the Iowa Woman’s Archives collection, the Roxburghe Collection in Special Collections, and the permanent reserve collection of videos. Interlibrary Loan staff members are responsible for the creation and maintenance of these records. Local holdings records for serials are also created and maintained by ILL …
