This presentation covers research on the physics and astronomy graduate students’ use and understanding of open access resources. The research, which was conducted in summer 2015, surveyed the physics and astronomy graduate students of Georgia Institute of Technology to discover how graduate students discover open access and other academic resources, as well as their level of awareness about open access in general and specific OA databases in particular. Each year search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo, complete trillions of search queries online. Students are especially dependent on these search tools because of their popularity, convenience and accessibility. The revised information literacy standards emphasize students as creators, and not just consumers, of information. Yet, so accustomed to supporting their classroom work, academic libraries have done little to help students develop an instinct for encountering information through self-directed curiosity. In this panel, learn how librarians are helping students develop this instinct through recreational reading promotion. Use and adapt these program and outreach ideas in order to better meet your academic library’s information literacy mission.

Partners In Teaching & Learning: Peer Research Tutors In The Library And Across Campus, Lisa A. Forrest

Students can play a unique role in the development of information literacy skills among their peers. Hamilton College's Peer Research Tutor Program, established in the fall of 2014, provides peer-to-peer information literacy support reaching far beuond the walls of the library. Serving as "first-tier" support at the desk, Research Tutors also develop and deliver information literacy workshops, create new bridges between their fellow peers and liaison librarians, and serve as information literacy ambassadors across campus.
