The question of how ions interact with each other and with the potential energy barrier in thin lipid bilayer membranes has interested investigators for several years. The application of electrodiffusion theory to the study of this question is the central theme of this work. We have calculated current-voltage curves for barriers of various shapes and heights, in each case by means of numerically integrating the exact electrodiffusion equation as well as this same equation in the constant field approximation. A preliminary rotation‐vibration analysis of the n=0 and n=1 subbands associated with the nν6+ν1−nν6 hydrogen‐bonded vibration in HCN⋅⋅⋅HF has been completed. The following excited staterotational constantsB′ and band origin frequencies ν0 have been determined for the complex. The results are consistent with a rotation‐vibration interaction constant α1=−68.3±1 MHz which correlates with an excited stater(N⋅⋅⋅F) internuclear distance of 2.762 Å, a decrease of 0.034 Å relative to the ground state.Excited state lifetimes associated with assigned transitions are demonstrated to be …

A general formulation of traveling‐wave sub‐Doppler excited molecule energy transferspectroscopy is presented. The line profile analysis is applied to that determined experimentally for the R(22) ν3 HCN transition. Pn the noise equivalent power of the detector is demonstrated to be ⩽10−12 W. Finally, the technique is applied to resolve the KsR(7) ν1 transition head in NH3.

A Laser Interferometric Study Of Electric Field Effects On Methane-Oxygen Flame Plasmas, Mark D. Prairie

A laser interferometer is developed to study the refractive index field, aerodynamic structure, and three dimensional temperature profile of a methane-oxygen flame system under the influence of D.C. electric fields. A combined graphical-numerical method is used to transform the observed interference patterns into radial temperature distributions. The results indicate that the electric field exerts a marked influence on the flame stability, geometry, and charged particle flow. Experimental evidence shows that these effects are most apparent under fuel rich conditions. It is suggested an electric field may change the concentration gradients of reacting species, leading to an altered course of fuel …

An observation of cascading optical photons can be used to determine an absolute excitation cross section for the intermediate state without the need of standard lamp calibration. In order to reduce the data an angular correlation function and an angular distribution function must be known. These functions depend on the alignment of the upper excited state and the polarization of the light emitted in the lower part of the cascade. However, at certain angles of observation the values of the required functions are known regardless of the alignment or polarization. A computer search is done to find these angles for …

An electron microscope with electrostatic lenses was used for high resolution studies of magnetic domains in thin iron films.
Observation methods used to determine the directions of local magnetization in iron thin films were the Lorentz method and the Foucault method.
We studied how Bloch line-crosstie pairs and crosstie main walls behave in applied, in-plane magnetic fields. We found that crosstie main walls remain unchanged until crosstie density goes nearly to zero when the field is applied perpendicular to the main wall. A twisted type of domain appears where crossties disappear.

Particle induced x-ray emission (PIXE) has been in use for several years at Western's accelerator laboratory. Its primary purpose has been to provide trace element analysis of various types of solid samples. The analysis of water samples has not been done because of problems involving target preparation for the accelerator. A process called vapor filtration, developed at Purdue University, allows adequate sample preparation for the accelerator. This process is being adapted for use here at WMU. When completely operational, this system will give the WMU accelerator program the additional capability of performing water quality analyses to concentrations of parts per …

Classical methods of analyzing heat capacity data for the characteristic moments of the frequency distribution are applied to iridium and rhodium. Impurity moments are determined from high and low temperature f values. These moments are combined by modern theory to estimate the magnitude of the host-host to host-impurity force constant ratio. Ratios of the various host moments are also examined.

Ground state forbidden transitions of np^q ions of C, N, 0, Ne, Mg, Si, S, and Fe can provide important information on the state of cosmic ionized gases. Wavelengths of these lines are in the far- and near-UV visible and near-- and far-IR regions of the spectrum. The line intensity ratios of particular transitions in q = 2, 4 ions can provide information on the temperature of the gas and in q = 3 ions information on the density of the gas. The Franck Condon factor is defined as the square of the overlap integral and is so named because of its ties with the Franck Condon Principle. The r-centroid is the internuclear separation associated with the electronic transition of the diatomic molecule. The physical meaning of these integrals is discussed. Two methods for construction of the wavefunctions are presented. Both methods employ the Morse Potential Energy function. The first method calculates the integrals using the analytic wavefunction of Morse and the second method has numerically constructed wavefunct!ons. Three Schott glasses typically used in space technology - LaK 21, KzFS N4, and LF 5 -- were irradiated with 85 MeV protons. Induced absorption spectra were determined for each glass after varying fluences of radiation. It was found that the spectra for each glass can be fitted with three Gaussian shaped bands in the near ultraviolet-visible region, while a fourth Gaussian characterizes the absorption edge. For doses up to 107 rads, the dependence of the induced absorption a on total dose is accurately described by the saturating exponential function a(Φ)= as (1 - e--b Φ ) …

The concept of occupied and unoccupied orbitals has provided a useful means for visualizing many of the most important properties of molecular systems. Yet, there is a curious imbalance in our experimental knowledge of the energies of occupied and unoccupied orbitals. Whereas photoelectron spectroscopy has provided a wealth of data on positive ion states and has established that they can be associated, within the context of Koopmans’ theorem, with the occupied orbitals of the neutral molecule, the corresponding information for the negative ion states, associated with the normally unoccupied orbitals, is sparse. This investigation was undertaken in order to confirm and to extend earlier studies of processes whereby energy and angular momentum are transferred from external to internal degrees of freedom in low velocity collisions between ions and atoms. Specifically, this investigation sought to verify the proper functioning of a device designed to study low velocity atomic and molecular collisions, to confirm results obtained in an earlier study of spectra produced by collisions of He+ions with argon atoms, and to extend the energy and wavelength ranges of this study to 1500 eV and 6200 Å, respectively.

As a general physical theory, the Reciprocal System of D.B. Larson covers all physical fields, including atomic physics . Inasmuch as all of the conclusions reached in the theoretical development are derived entirely by deduction from the basic postulates of this system, the conclusions provide information that is completely independent of observation. The theoretical development indicates that the Mosely atomic number mathematical formula is quite right, and the Rutherford-Bohr-Mosely nuclear atom physical interpretation of atomic number is seriously wrong. Temporary negative ions of benzene, aniline, phenol, anisole, fluoro-, chloro-, and bromobenzene, formed in the gas phase by capture of electrons into the low-lying π* orbitals, are studied by means of electron transmission spectroscopy. The electron affinities are determined and their relative values are interpreted in terms of resonance and inductive effects.

Low-Energy Electron Scattering From Mg, Zn, Cd And Hg: Shape Resonances And Electron Affinities, Paul Burrow, J.A. Michejda, J. Comer

Measurements of electron scattering at low energy from Mg, Zn, Cd and Hg have been carried out using the electron transmission method. A large shape resonance is observed for each element which we identify with the (ns2np)2P ground state of the negative ion. The electron affinities in eV are found to be Mg(–0.15), Zn(–0.49), Cd(–0,33) and Hg(–0.63) with an error of ±0.03 eV. The results are compared with the available theoretical predictions.

We examine the problem of the dynamics of a hexagonal close packed crystal with a single substitutional impurity. The effects of the mass and the force constant changes due to the introduction of the impurity atom are taken into account assuming nearest neighbor interactions under the harmonic approximation. Using Green’s function and group theoretical methods, the equations of motion for the perturbed normal modes are obtained in an exact form. The calculations are performed by allowing for very general force constant changes which can have noncentral as well as central contributions. A method to calculate the infrared absorption due to a very low concentration of defects in a diatomic cubic crystal is developed directly from the basic absorption equation in quantum mechanics when the impurity produces changes in mass and short-range force constants. It is shown that the absorption is due to the modes of T1u symmetry about the defect and is proportional to the square of the projection of the amplitudes of the ions in the defect space onto the transverse-optic modes at the zone center as determined by the perturbation. Science is the process of seeking unity in the diversity of natural phenomenon. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that group theory brings unity to the theory of elementary particles. The prime motivations are first, to find a quantitative representation of the Lorentz transformation, and second, to find a quantitative representation of angular momentum. Since both of these have continuous parameters, groups with continuous parameters, particularly Lie groups, are of interest.

We present models for temperature and ionization structure of low, uniform-density (n ~ 0.3 cm^-3) interstellar gas in a galactic disk which is exposed to soft X-rays from supernova outbursts occurring randomly in space and time. The structure was calculated by computing the time record of temperature and ionization at a given point by Monte Carlo simulation. The calculation yields probability distribution functions for ionized fraction x, temperature T, and their various observable moments. These time-dependent models predict a bimodal temperature distribution of the gas with structure in x, T that agrees with various observations. Cold regions in the low-density …

The results of calculations for time-dependent ionization equilibrium and line emission are presented and compared with the values obtained under the assumption that steady-state conditions prevail. In the models considered, it is assumed that the electron density is constant (=10^3 cm^-3) and that the temperature increases by a factor of 10 from 3 x 10^6 K on timescales ranging from 100 to 300 s and decays back to 3 x 10^6 K on a timescale ranging from 600 to 1400 s. Ions of oxygen and silicon are considered, and it is found that the spectrum is softer during the rise …

Using Fe57Mössbauer spectroscopy, two alternative sites occupied by cobalt (10-4 at. % ) impurity atoms in aluminum have been isolated. The substitutional site A is the stable position after annealing the sample above 840 K, followed by a rapid quench. The impurity atoms in site A are characterized by a single line Mössbauer spectrum (indicative of a cubic environment), a room-temperature f = 0.502 (r. m. s. displ. 0.071 A) and an I. S. (reI. to Fe) = -0.421 mm/sec. For anneals below 770 K the cobalt atoms migrate to site B, which is characterized by a …

Often electron micrographs exhibit a repeating structure. Sometimes this repeating structure satisfies the definition of a crystal in that it has a three dimensional repeating structure. If the unit cell structure of this repeating structure can be determined it can be used to help categorize different sections of a particular sample. In some cases, the use of optical diffraction analysis of electron micrographs with repeating structure is a method of determining the unit cell structure.
