An Application Of Molecular Dynamics To Hed Plasma Physics: Point And Group Defect Diffusion In Coulomb Crystals, Levi Webb Jan 2026

An Application Of Molecular Dynamics To Hed Plasma Physics: Point And Group Defect Diffusion In Coulomb Crystals, Levi Webb

Theses and Dissertations

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to explore the microscopic behaviors of complex systems that cannot be easily studied experimentally. In particular, the microphysics of high energy density (HED) astrophysical plasma environments remain inaccessible by modern experiment---even in laser facilities, these plasmas exist only on short timescales that do not lend easily to investigation. The diffusion of point and group defects through crystallized plasmas in the cores of white dwarfs and neutron star crusts, called Coulomb crystals, has potentially macroscopic implications for the evolution of these bodies. Thus, I employ the widely-used MD code LAMMPS to simulate small Coulomb crystal …

Electrical Characterization Of Germanium Tin Alloys And Devices For Space Reliability, Kevin K. Choe Sep 2025

Electrical Characterization Of Germanium Tin Alloys And Devices For Space Reliability, Kevin K. Choe

Theses and Dissertations

GeSn (germanium tin) alloys are potentially well suited for near-mid infrared space optoelectronic applications. Alloys of GeSn have similar properties to group III-V and mercury-cadmium-telluride semiconductors and are compatible with cost-effective complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) manufacturing technology. Recent progress in non-equilibrium remote plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RPECVD) has enabled the crystalline growth of GeSn with Sn concentrations of up to 10% without Sn surface segregation. Several experimental studies in previous literature report CVD- or molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)-grown GeSn alloys achieving a direct bandgap with 6%-9% Sn content. This novel growth technique opens opportunities for a cost-effective, next-generation optical …

Fused-Silica Microelectromechanical Systems For Relative Gravimetry, Ethan Doerstling Jun 2025

Fused-Silica Microelectromechanical Systems For Relative Gravimetry, Ethan Doerstling

Theses and Dissertations

Gravimeters are devices that measure gravitational acceleration which can be used by the United States Air Force (USAF) in the areas of navigation and remote sensing. Fused-silica microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) devices offer capabilities to make inexpensive relative gravimeters with higher thermal stability than common silicon devices while maintaining good gravitational sensitivity. The fused-silica devices in this research were designed, simulated, fabricated, and tested to observe their performance as gravimeters. The devices exhibit properties of highly sensitive accelerometers but the current designs do not qualify as gravimeters. This study provides information to improve the sensitivity and stability of these fused-silica MEMS …

Transfer Efficiencies Of Surface-To-Surface Transport Of Micron-Sized Actinide Surrogate Particles, Austin R. Powell Mar 2025

Transfer Efficiencies Of Surface-To-Surface Transport Of Micron-Sized Actinide Surrogate Particles, Austin R. Powell

Theses and Dissertations

Particle effluent of varying sizes is released during routine activities within laboratory environments and these particles can come in contact with a wide range of surfaces. Particles of micron size or smaller can be especially pervasive and can transfer between multiple subsequent surfaces, leading to the progressive contamination of a laboratory. Understanding the transport dynamics of micron sized particles will help inform facility personnel of the possibility of contamination by these potentially hazardous materials of interest. In this research, the transfer efficiency of micron sized surrogate actinide particles (Europium-doped Gadolinium Oxysulfide (EGOS)) is measured for multiple materials, between two particle …

Numerical Studies Of Semiclassical Light Storage Using The Coherent Atomic Transfer Function, Zachary T. Johnson Mar 2025

Numerical Studies Of Semiclassical Light Storage Using The Coherent Atomic Transfer Function, Zachary T. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Quantum communication through photons relies on photonic storage to preserve quantum states. However, when photons interact with matter, quantum information becomes distorted. A recently developed semi-classical analytical model predicts output light pulses from an electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) system. Using the predictions, the model known as the Coherent Atomic Transfer (CAT) Function, is capable of predicting the stored pulse or reconstructing the original pulse. Using numerical convolution and deconvolution with the CAT function as an analog of the point spread function of Fourier optics can provide insights on the effects of EIT storage on the retrieved pulse. Blind deconvolution is …

Implications Of Magnetic Evolution On Coronal Loop Thermal Variation Prior To Solar Flares, Kara L. Kniezewski Mar 2025

Implications Of Magnetic Evolution On Coronal Loop Thermal Variation Prior To Solar Flares, Kara L. Kniezewski

Theses and Dissertations

Solar flares are intense bursts of electromagnetic radiation, which occur due to a rapid destabilization and reconnection of the magnetic field. While flares are a magnetic phenomena, very little attention has been paid to thermal conditions in the corona prior to flare onset. This study serves as a follow-on to Kniezewski et al., 2024, where the EUV emission from coronal loops was observed to vary substantially and without any coherence between channels before 53 off-limb flares. These variations suggest multiple mechanisms within the coronal magnetic field are responsible for heating fluctuations. Here, the 3D magnetic field is modeled using a …

On The Exploration Of Crystallographic Anisotropy And Defects In Shock Loading Using Molecular Dynamics, Benjamin P. Helman

Theses and Dissertations

The impact of crystallographic orientation, grain boundaries, and vacancies on the shock behavior of aluminum was investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. Shock loading in the [001], [011], and [111] directions was explored, revealing anisotropic behavior in shock speed, melting, dislocation density, and unique phase changes. The Hugoniot elastic limit in the [100], [110], and [111] directions was calculated as 23.2 GPa, 24 GPa, and 18.4 GPa respectively. These results were found to be an order of magnitude larger than the compressive yield strength computed at equilibrium. Additionally, metastable melting in the [011] and [111] directions occurred roughly 1000 K below …

Material Classification With Spectropolarimetric Lidar, Alexander J. Watson Mar 2025

Material Classification With Spectropolarimetric Lidar, Alexander J. Watson

Theses and Dissertations

A method for characterizing unknown targets using a hyperspectral polarimetric light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system is presented. Light reflected from manmade objects tends to be more polarized than light reflected from objects in the natural world. As such, polarization measurements can be used in remote sensing applications to differentiate artificial and natural objects. Previous works have attempted to characterize objects through passive polarimetric imagery. Methods developed by Cain and Lemaster and Cunningham facilitate reconstruction of the Stokes Vector from returning light. Martin used multispectral polarimetry to classify targets when the angle of incidence (AOI) is close to 0º. Here, …

Theses and Dissertations

High-resolution Laser-Induced Breakdown Self-Reversal Isotopic Spectrometry (LIBRIS) is implemented to record the 15.8 pm Li I 670.8 nm isotopic shift in LiOH · H2O samples of varying 6, 7Li abundance. A simple univariate linear regression demonstrates an acquired isotopic shift of 13.813 ± 1.21 pm in samples varying from 3 to 95 6Li at%. Supervised machine learning regressions are trained on self-reversal wavelength locations in order to quantify 6Li abundance. A stacked ensemble using two base learners yields the superlative characterization of 6Li abundance with RMSE of 5.66 at% and detection limit of 18.8 at%. Using …

Periodic Trends In The Electronic And Magnetic Structure Of Superatomic 3d Transition Metal Chalcogenide Clusters, Gabriel Bohannon Jan 2025

Periodic Trends In The Electronic And Magnetic Structure Of Superatomic 3d Transition Metal Chalcogenide Clusters, Gabriel Bohannon

Theses and Dissertations

We have systematically investigated the electronic structure of octahedral transition metal chalcogenide clusters, TM6S8(CO)6, in which the transition metal atoms are from the 3d series in order to identify if periodic properties emerge. We were motivated by the identification of closed electronic shells with electron counts of 96, 100 and 114 in similar clusters from the 4d and 5d transition metal series. Further motivation was the finding of a dual-shell closing in the Fe6S8(CN)65- cluster. This cluster is stabilized with a large spin magnetic moment due to the …

Collisional And Spatial Characterization Of Electron Broadening In Rubidium Vapor, Jordan C. Mindrup Sep 2024

Collisional And Spatial Characterization Of Electron Broadening In Rubidium Vapor, Jordan C. Mindrup

Theses and Dissertations

Stark broadening of the 42D → 122F transition of rubidium is examined in a rubidium vapor cell with modulated double pump-probe spectroscopy at helium pressures of 0.001 Torr, 3.0 Torr, and 30.0 Torr. A pressure dependent critical rubidium number density was observed after which the presence of electrons becomes dominant. It is observed that after the rubidium density threshold, a linear relationship is seen between rubidium number density and the Stark broadened width of the line shapes, with a slope of 0.079 ± 0.002, 0.18 ± 0.01, and 0.9 ± 0.1 for helium pressures of 0.001 …

Collisional Broadening And Shift Of Rubidium 42D5/2N2F Line Shapes With Helium And Electrons, Dillon T. Nice Jun 2024

Collisional Broadening And Shift Of Rubidium 42D5/2 → N2F Line Shapes With Helium And Electrons, Dillon T. Nice

Theses and Dissertations

Line shapes for three rubidium 42D5/2n2F transitions were collected using pump probe spectroscopy. Broadening rates for Rb-He collisions ranged from 139–171 MHz/Torr and shift rates ranged from 113–146 MHz/Torr. Then, line shapes were collected at different alkali densities to measure electron density. Electron density had a clear “runaway ionization density threshold” around 1.5×1013 cm−3. The three transitions agreed within 2% on the observed fractional ionization when calculated using the observed Stark width but did not agree on the observed fractional ionization when calculated using the observed Stark shift. These results …

Global Empirical Model Of Sporadic-E Occurrence Rates, Eli V. Parsch Mar 2024

Global Empirical Model Of Sporadic-E Occurrence Rates, Eli V. Parsch

Theses and Dissertations

Encompassing the Earth, the ionosphere presents unique challenges to modern communication, navigation, and surveillance technologies. Intense ionization enhancements known as sporadic-E (Es), can degrade and disrupt signals in unpredictable ways. Much work has been done to understand this phenomenon and more recent efforts have attempted to model its behavior and impacts. However, there have been limited efforts at modeling global Es occurrence rates (OR) at high time resolutions. This study develops a global empirical model of blanketing sporadic-E (fbEs) occurrence rates using a Karhunen-Lo´eve Expansion (KLE) of global fbEs OR climatologies built with Global Positioning System radio occultations (GPS-RO) and …

Neutron Spectrum Unfolding From Activation Foils Irradiated In Gamble Ii Using Deuterated Polyethylene Anodes, Christopher J. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Neutrons can cause irreparable harm to electronics, and experiments are needed to understand their effects fully. This work explores using pulsed power, which is low-cost compared to other sources, to create a useful neutron-rich environment. Deuterated polyethylene was used as anode and catcher material to generate the neutrons from the Deuterium-Deuterium (DD) fusion reaction. A simple, effective, and repeatable method was employed to directly cast deuterated polyethylene onto polyethylene sheets to fabricate the anode and catcher. The DD reactions were made by an ion beam-driven pulsed power generator, Gamble II, with the catcher located in the cathode. Zinc, copper, aluminum, …

Analyzing The Effects Of Atmospheric Turbulence On Polarization-Entangled Photon Pairs Using Quantum State Tomography, Noah S. Everett Mar 2024

Analyzing The Effects Of Atmospheric Turbulence On Polarization-Entangled Photon Pairs Using Quantum State Tomography, Noah S. Everett

Theses and Dissertations

To help in building a quantum-based communication link, we experimentally designed a system to simulate atmospheric turbulence and characterize its effects on a polarization-entangled photon-pair source. The simulated turbulence is constructed using two afocal optical systems with a phase plate inserted in each to mimic both weak and strong atmospheric turbulence respectively. After propagation, quantum state tomography (QST) is performed on each pair to reconstruct the density matrix of the pair’s overall polarization state. In characterization of the simulated turbulence, we were able to reach strengths up to a D/r0 of 18.2, which begins to approach the strong turbulent regime. …

Advancements In Time Resolved Spectroscopy And Nonlinear Microscopy, Bryan Semon Dec 2023

Advancements In Time Resolved Spectroscopy And Nonlinear Microscopy, Bryan Semon

Theses and Dissertations

Non-linear optical processes such as coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering and sum frequency generation offer a view into the chemical and biological interactions of molecules that is distinctly different from linear techniques like near infra-red and fluorescence. This insight comes at a cost: non-linear techniques are more sensitive to external perturbations of the system, increasing the noise and decreasing the repeatability of the data. We work here on both aspects of these non-linear techniques, taking advantage of their power to offer new imaging techniques as well as working to quantify and reduce the non-resonant noise inherent to the system. In pursuit …

Analyzing The Effects Of Ultrafast Laser Processing On Mechanical Properties Of 3d-Printed Pla Parts, Darshan Pramodbhai Yadav

Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in additive manufacturing technologies have already led to wide-scale adoption of 3D-printed parts in various industries. The expansion in choice of materials that can be processed, particularly using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), and the steady advancements in dimensional accuracy control have extended the range of applications far beyond rapid prototyping. However, additive manufacturing still has considerable limitations compared to traditional and subtractive manufacturing processes. This work addresses limitations associated with the as-deposited surface roughness of 3D-printed parts. The effects of roughness-induced stress concentrations were studied on ultimate tensile strength and fatigue life. The samples were manufactured using a …

Improving And Evaluating Performance Of The Proton Prediction System Through An Expanded Solar Proton Event Catalog, Samantha R. Howard Sep 2023

Improving And Evaluating Performance Of The Proton Prediction System Through An Expanded Solar Proton Event Catalog, Samantha R. Howard

Theses and Dissertations

Solar energetic particles (SEPs) are especially high energy protons (≥ 5 or 10MeV kinetic energies) originating from the Sun that are known to have significant effects on space-based military operations. The Air Force’s current forecast model, the Proton Prediction System (PPS), forecasts less than half of SEP events that are observed, motivating the need for an update to the operational model. To develop the updated PPS model, PPS2.0, an expanded SEP catalog was produced, which includes 103 previously unidentified events and specification of the proton flux response above background levels or prior events. Event detection and source association were initially …

Brdf Measurements And Physical Optics Modeling Applied To Anisotropic Satellite Solar Cells, Madilynn E. Compean Sep 2023

Brdf Measurements And Physical Optics Modeling Applied To Anisotropic Satellite Solar Cells, Madilynn E. Compean

Theses and Dissertations

Light curve analysis is often used to discern information about satellites in geosynchronous orbits, and since solar panels comprise relatively large surface areas, their reflected energy can contribute greatly to observed light curves. Data was collected using a space qualified solar cell interrogated by a green HeNe laser. The data validated certain aspects from previous work, but also identified multi-slit behavior, showed that the specular term was a second diffraction pattern, and diagnosed the out-of-plane diffraction curvature as the conical diffraction phenomenon. Two physical-optics-based models were developed to incorporate these new features and better predict solar cell BRDF solely from …

Theses and Dissertations

The rubidium 5S-5D two-photon transitions were probed between 758-798 nm, where a six order of magnitude change in the cross section was observed and the polarization dependence was seen explicitly. Collisional rates are measured in cesium on the 6P-9S and 5D-10F transitions, with broadening rates as large as 710 MHz/Torr and shifting rates as large as 273 MHz/Torr. We observe Stark broadening on the cesium 5D-10F line shape, with Lorentzian width increasing from 200 MHz to 40 GHz. The influence of electron impact is discussed under these conditions and with 0-20 Torr of helium. Cascade amplified spontaneous emission is seen …

Using Superatomic Clusters And Charge Transfer Ligands To Control Electronic Characteristics Of Phosphorene Nanoribbons And Phosphorene Monolayer, Ryan Lambert

Theses and Dissertations

Phosphorene is a two-dimensional electron poor p-type semiconductor with high carrier mobility and great promise for applications in electronics and optoelectronics. As the main theme in this dissertation, the following work represents different investigations of various electronic properties associated with phosphorene. Most notable are the findings on charge transfer doping with metal-chalcogenide superatoms which displays novel control of the two most important properties of a semiconductor – the band gap energy and the nature of carriers. By tuning the width of the gap and p-/n-type character of conduction, we gain control over a material’s capacity to play a certain role …

Molecular Insights Into The Redox Of Atmospheric Mercury Through Laser Spectroscopy, Rongrong Wu Cohen Dec 2022

Molecular Insights Into The Redox Of Atmospheric Mercury Through Laser Spectroscopy, Rongrong Wu Cohen

Theses and Dissertations

The widespread pollution of mercury motivates research into its atmospheric chemistry and transport. Gaseous elemental mercury (Hg(0)) dominates mercury emission to the atmosphere, but the rate of its oxidation to mercury compound (Hg(II)) plays a significant role in controlling where and when mercury deposits to ecosystems. Atomic bromine is regarded as the main oxidant for Hg(0) oxidation, known to initiate the oxidation via a two-step process in the atmosphere – formation of BrHg (R1) and subsequent reactions of BrHg with abundant free radicals Y, i.e., NO2, HOO, etc. (R2), where the reaction of BrHg +Y could also lead to the …

A handheld XRF device was able to detect gallium in a Pu surrogate matrix with a detection limit of 0.002 wt% and a mean error of 8%. A handheld LIBS device was …

Characterization Of Environmental Conditioning Of Lithium Hydride Using Spectroscopy And Machine Learning, Ryan E. Pinson Mar 2022

Characterization Of Environmental Conditioning Of Lithium Hydride Using Spectroscopy And Machine Learning, Ryan E. Pinson

Theses and Dissertations

Lithium compounds such as lithium hydride (LiH) and anhydrous lithium hydroxide (LiOH) have various applications in industry but are highly reactive when exposed to moisture and CO2. These reactions create new molecular forms, including compounds such as lithium oxide (Li2O), lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LiOH ·H2O), and lithium carbonate (Li2CO3). These new compounds degrade the effectiveness in applications using these compounds. The negative effects induced by new lithium compounds creates a need for the ability to characterize the in-growth of such compounds. To study these in-growths, this work will present environmental …

Atomistic Simulation Of Na+ And Cl- Ions Binding Mechanisms To Tobermorite 14Å As A Model For Alkali Activated Cements, Ahmed Abdelkawy Jan 2022

Atomistic Simulation Of Na+ And Cl- Ions Binding Mechanisms To Tobermorite 14Å As A Model For Alkali Activated Cements, Ahmed Abdelkawy

Theses and Dissertations

The production of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is responsible for ~8% of all man-made CO2 emissions. Unfortunately, due to the continuous increase in the number of construction projects, and since virtually all projects depend on hardened cement from the hydration of OPC as the main binding material, the production of OPC is not expected to decrease. Alkali-activated cement produced from the alkaline activation of byproducts of industries, such as iron and coal industries, or processed clays represents a potential substitute for OPC. However, the interaction of the reaction products of AAC with corrosive ions from the environment, such as Cl-, …

Theses and Dissertations

We have investigated the Optical absorption, Infrared spectra, Binding Energies, and various other cluster properties to determine the existence of periodic trend for Transition Metal Chalcogenide Clusters ligated with CO ligands. We were motivated to answer the question of whether periodic behavior can be observed in properties of octahedral metal-chalcogenide clusters. We have used the Amsterdam Density Functional code to calculate the electronic structure of Transition Metal Chalcogenide Clusters using gradient-corrected density functional theory. We determined the existence of several periodic trends in properties of octahedral Transition Metal Chalcogenide Clusters TM6Se8(CO)6. To investigate these …

Development Of A Magnetic Confinement Attachment For Enhanced Signal In Handheld Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Soil Analysis, Alfred C. Anderson Dec 2021

Development Of A Magnetic Confinement Attachment For Enhanced Signal In Handheld Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Soil Analysis, Alfred C. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Field techniques for characterizing low levels of heavy elements of less than 100 parts per million in soils tend to be unreliable because of the relatively weak signal of these elements and the large, variable background inherent to analyzing soils with minimal sample preparation. To enhance the detection and analysis capability of a handheld laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) instrument, this work investigates the effects of a unique magnetic confinement apparatus on signal intensities, focusing on five iron lines as well as those from actinides in 11 soil samples. The proposed magnetic confinement apparatus achieved over 0.8 T but did not …
