Springer Representations On The Khovanov Springer Varieties, Heather M. Russell, Julianna Tymoczko Jan 2011

Springer Representations On The Khovanov Springer Varieties, Heather M. Russell, Julianna Tymoczko

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Springer varieties are studied because their cohomology carries a natural action of the symmetric group Sn and their top-dimensional cohomology is irreducible. In his work on tangle invariants, Khovanov constructed a family of Springer varieties Xn as subvarieties of the product of spheres (S2)n. We show that if Xn is embedded antipodally in (S2)n then the natural Sn-action on (S2)n induces an Sn-representation on the image of H*(Xn). This representation is the Springer representation. Our construction admits an elementary (and geometrically …

Neutrosophic Interval Bialgebraic Structures, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy Jan 2011

Neutrosophic Interval Bialgebraic Structures, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book the authors for the first time introduce the notion of neutrosophic intervals and study the algebraic structures using them. Concepts like groups and fields using neutrosophic intervals are not possible. Pure neutrosophic intervals and mixed neutrosophic intervals are introduced and by the very structure of the interval one can understand the category to which it belongs. We in this book introduce the notion of pure (mixed) neutrosophic interval bisemigroups or neutrosophic biinterval semigroups. We derive results pertaining to them. The new notion of quasi bisubsemigroups and ideals are introduced. Smarandache interval neutrosophic bisemigroups are also introduced and …

Finite Neutrosophic Complex Numbers, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy Jan 2011

Finite Neutrosophic Complex Numbers, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book for the first time the authors introduce the notion of real neutrosophic complex numbers. Further the new notion of finite complex modulo integers is defined. For every C(Zn) the complex modulo integer iF is such that 2 Fi = n – 1. Several algebraic structures on C(Zn) are introduced and studied. Further the notion of complex neutrosophic modulo integers is introduced. Vector spaces and linear algebras are constructed using these neutrosophic complex modulo integers. This book is organized into 5 chapters. The first chapter introduces real neutrosophic complex numbers. Chapter two introduces the notion of finite complex …

Interval Algebraic Bistructures, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy Jan 2011

Interval Algebraic Bistructures, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Authors in this book construct interval bistructures using only interval groups, interval loops, interval semigroups and interval groupoids. Several results enjoyed by these interval bistructures are described. By this method, we obtain interval bistructures which are associative or non associative or quasi associative. The term quasi is used mainly in the interval bistructure B = B1 ∪ B2 (or in n-interval structure) if one of B1 (or B2) enjoys an algebraic property and the other does not enjoy that property (one section of interval structure satisfies an algebraic property and the remaining section does not satisfy that particular property). The …

Algebraic Structures Using Super Interval Matrices, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy Jan 2011

Algebraic Structures Using Super Interval Matrices, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The advantage of using super interval matrices is that one can build only one vector space using m × n interval matrices, but in case of super interval matrices we can have several such spaces depending on the partition on the interval matrix.

This book has seven chapters. Chapter one is introductory in nature, just introducing the super interval matrices or interval super matrices. In chapter two essential operations on super interval matrices are defined. Further in this chapter algebraic structures are defined on these super interval matrices using these operation. Using these super interval matrices semirings and semivector spaces …

Algebraic Structures Using Natural Class Of Intervals, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy Jan 2011

Algebraic Structures Using Natural Class Of Intervals, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Authors in this book introduce a new class of intervals called the natural class of intervals, also known as the special class of intervals or as natural intervals. These intervals are built using increasing intervals, decreasing intervals and degenerate intervals. We say an interval [a, b] is an increasing interval if a < b for any a, b in the field of reals R. An interval [a, b] is a decreasing interval if a > b and the interval [a, b] is a degenerate interval if a = b for a, b in the field of reals R. The natural class of intervals consists of the collection of increasing intervals, decreasing intervals and the degenerate intervals. Clearly R is contained in the natural …

Study Of Natural Class Of Intervals Using (–∞,∞) And (∞, –∞), Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, D. Datta, H.S. Kushwaha, P.A. Jadhav Jan 2011

Study Of Natural Class Of Intervals Using (–∞,∞) And (∞, –∞), Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy, D. Datta, H.S. Kushwaha, P.A. Jadhav

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book the authors study the properties of natural class of intervals built using (–∞, ∞) and (∞, –∞). These natural class of intervals behave like the reals R, as far as the operations of addition, multiplication, subtraction and division are concerned. Using these natural class of intervals we build interval row matrices, interval column matrices and m × n interval matrices. Several properties about them are defined and studied. Also all arithmetic operations are performed on them in the usual way. The authors by defining so have made it easier for operations like multiplication, addition, finding determinant and …

Interval Semigroups, Florentin Smarandache, W.B. Vasantha Kandasamy

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this book we introduce the notion of interval semigroups using intervals of the form [0, a], a is real. Several types of interval semigroups like fuzzy interval semigroups, interval symmetric semigroups, special symmetric interval semigroups, interval matrix semigroups and interval polynomial semigroups are defined and discussed. This book has eight chapters. The main feature of this book is that we suggest 241 problems in the eighth chapter. In this book the authors have defined 29 new concepts and illustrates them with 231 examples. Certainly this will find several applications. The authors deeply acknowledge Dr. Kandasamy for the proof reading …

The Concept of a G-space came into being as a consequence of Group action on an ordinary set. Over the history of Mathematics and Algebra, theory of group action has emerged and proven to be an applicable and effective framework for the study of different kinds of structures to make connection among them.

Quaternionic Hermitian Spinor Systems And Compatibility Conditions, Alberto Damiano, David Eelbode, Irene Sabadini Jan 2011

Quaternionic Hermitian Spinor Systems And Compatibility Conditions, Alberto Damiano, David Eelbode, Irene Sabadini

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

In this paper we show that the systems introduced in [12] and [22] are equivalent, both giving the notion of quaternionic Hermitian monogenic functions. This makes it possible to prove that the free resolution associated to the system is linear in any dimension, and that the first cohomology module is nontrivial, thus generalizing the results in [22]. Furthermore, exploiting the decomposition of the spinor space into sp(m)-irreducibles, we find a certain number of "algebraic" compatibility conditions for the system, suggesting that the usual spinor reduction is not applicable.

Differential Geometry Of Moving Surfaces And Its Relation To Solitons, Andrei Ludu Jan 2011

Differential Geometry Of Moving Surfaces And Its Relation To Solitons, Andrei Ludu

Publications

In this article we present an introduction in the geometrical theory of motion of curves and surfaces in R 3 , and its relations with the nonlinear integrable systems. The working frame is the Cartan’s theory of moving frames together with Cartan connection. The formalism for the motion of curves is constructed in the Serret-Frenet frames as elements of the bundle of adapted frames. The motion of surfaces is investigated in the Gauss-Weingarten frame. We present the relations between types of motions and nonlinear equations and their soliton solutions.

Structures On A K3 Surface, Nathan P. Rowe Dec 2010

Structures On A K3 Surface, Nathan P. Rowe

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In the first part of this paper, we examine properties of K3 surfaces of the form:

(x2 + 1)(y2 + 1)(z2 + 1) + Axyz − 2 = 0

We show the surface has Picard number q " 12 by finding 12 curves whose equivalence classes are linearly independent. These curves have self intersection −2. We find the lattice representations of the single-coordinate swapping automorphisms in x, y, and z. We show that we have enough of the Lattice to make accurate predictions of polynomial degree growth under the automorphisms. We describe these automorphisms in terms of operations on elliptic …

Rethinking Geometrical Exactness, Marco Panza Nov 2010

Rethinking Geometrical Exactness, Marco Panza

MPP Published Research

A crucial concern of early modern geometry was fixing appropriate norms for deciding whether some objects, procedures, or arguments should or should not be allowed into it. According to Bos, this is the exactness concern. I argue that Descartes’s way of responding to this concern was to suggest an appropriate conservative extension of Euclid’s plane geometry (EPG). In Section 2, I outline the exactness concern as, I think, it appeared to Descartes. In Section 3, I account for Descartes’s views on exactness and for his attitude towards the most common sorts of constructions in classical geometry. I also explain in …

Analyzing Fractals, Kara Mesznik May 2010

Analyzing Fractals, Kara Mesznik

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

For my capstone project, I analyzed fractals. A fractal is a picture that is composed of smaller images of the larger picture. Each smaller picture is self- similar, meaning that each of these smaller pictures is actually the larger image just contracted in size through the use of the Contraction Mapping Theorem and shifted using linear and affine transformations.

Fractals live in something called a metric space. A metric space, denoted (X, d), is a space along with a distance formula used to measure the distance between elements in the space. When producing fractals …

Drawing A Triangle On The Thurston Model Of Hyperbolic Space, Curtis D. Bennett, Blake Mellor, Patrick D. Shanahan Apr 2010

Drawing A Triangle On The Thurston Model Of Hyperbolic Space, Curtis D. Bennett, Blake Mellor, Patrick D. Shanahan

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

In looking at a common physical model of the hyperbolic plane, the authors encountered surprising difficulties in drawing a large triangle. Understanding these difficulties leads to an intriguing exploration of the geometry of the Thurston model of the hyperbolic plane. In this exploration we encounter topics ranging from combinatorics and Pick’s Theorem to differential geometry and the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem.

Recognizing Graph Theoretic Properties With Polynomial Ideals, Jesus A. De Loera, Christopher J. Hillar, Peter N. Malkin, Mohamed Omar Jan 2010

Recognizing Graph Theoretic Properties With Polynomial Ideals, Jesus A. De Loera, Christopher J. Hillar, Peter N. Malkin, Mohamed Omar

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Many hard combinatorial problems can be modeled by a system of polynomial equations. N. Alon coined the term polynomial method to describe the use of nonlinear polynomials when solving combinatorial problems. We continue the exploration of the polynomial method and show how the algorithmic theory of polynomial ideals can be used to detect k-colorability, unique Hamiltonicity, and automorphism rigidity of graphs. Our techniques are diverse and involve Nullstellensatz certificates, linear algebra over finite fields, Gröbner bases, toric algebra, convex programming, and real algebraic geometry.

The first chapter is introductory in nature and gives a few essential definitions and references for the reader to make use of the literature in case the reader is not thorough with the basics. …

Proposed Problems Of Mathematics (Vol. Ii), Florentin Smarandache Jan 2010

Proposed Problems Of Mathematics (Vol. Ii), Florentin Smarandache

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

The first book of “Problèmes avec et sans … problèmes!” was published in Morocco in 1983. I collected these problems that I published in various Romanian or foreign magazines (amongst which: “Gazeta Matematică”, magazine which formed me as problem solver, “American Mathematical Monthly”, “Crux Mathematicorum” (Canada), “Elemente der Mathematik” (Switzerland), “Gaceta Matematica” (Spain), “Nieuw voor Archief” (Holland), etc. while others are new proposed problems in this second volume.

These have been created in various periods: when I was working as mathematics professor in Romania (1984-1988), or co-operant professor in Morocco (1982-1984), or emigrant in the USA (1990-1997). I thank to …

Epimorphisms And Boundary Slopes Of 2–Bridge Knots, Jim Hoste, Patrick D. Shanahan Jan 2010

Epimorphisms And Boundary Slopes Of 2–Bridge Knots, Jim Hoste, Patrick D. Shanahan

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

In this article we study a partial ordering on knots in S3 where K1≥K2 if there is an epimorphism from the knot group of K1 onto the knot group of K2 which preserves peripheral structure. If K1 is a 2–bridge knot and K1≥K2, then it is known that K2 must also be 2–bridge. Furthermore, Ohtsuki, Riley and Sakuma give a construction which, for a given 2–bridge knot Kp∕q, produces infinitely many 2–bridge knots Kp′/q′ with Kp′∕q′≥Kp∕q. After characterizing all 2–bridge knots …

Geometry Of Control-Affine Systems, Jeanne N. Clelland, Christopher G. Moseley, George R. Wilkens Dec 2009

Geometry Of Control-Affine Systems, Jeanne N. Clelland, Christopher G. Moseley, George R. Wilkens

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Motivated by control-affine systems in optimal control theory, we introduce the notion of a point-affine distribution on a manifold X - i.e., an affine distribution F together with a distinguished vector field contained in F. We compute local invariants for point-affine distributions of constant type when dim(X) = n, rank(F) = n - 1, and when dim(X) = 3, rank(F) = 1. Unlike linear distributions, which are characterized by integer- valued invariants - namely, the rank and growth vector - when dim(X) ≤ 4, we find local invariants depending on arbitrary functions even for rank 1 point-affine distributions on manifolds …

Fan Cohomology And Equivariant Chow Rings Of Toric Varieties, Mu-Wan Huang Aug 2009

Fan Cohomology And Equivariant Chow Rings Of Toric Varieties, Mu-Wan Huang

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Toric varieties are varieties equipped with a torus action and constructed from cones and fans. In the joint work with Suanne Au and Mark E. Walker, we prove that the equivariant K-theory of an affine toric variety constructed from a cone can be identified with a group ring determined by the cone. When a toric variety X(Δ) is smooth, we interpret equivariant K-groups as presheaves on the associated fan space Δ. Relating the sheaf cohomology groups to equivariant K-groups via a spectral sequence, we provide another proof of a theorem of Vezzosi and Vistoli: equivariant K …

Fan Cohomology And Its Application To Equivariant K-Theory Of Toric Varieties, Suanne Au Jul 2009

Fan Cohomology And Its Application To Equivariant K-Theory Of Toric Varieties, Suanne Au

Department of Mathematics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Mu-Wan Huang, Mark Walker and I established an explicit formula for the equivariant K-groups of affine toric varieties. We also recovered a result due to Vezzosi and Vistoli, which expresses the equivariant K-groups of a smooth toric variety in terms of the K-groups of its maximal open affine toric subvarieties. This dissertation investigates the situation when the toric variety X is neither affine nor smooth. In many cases, we compute the Čech cohomology groups of the presheaf KqT on X endowed with a topology. Using these calculations and Walker's Localization Theorem for equivariant K-theory, we give explicit formulas …

An Adaptive Method For Calculating Blow-Up Solutions, Charles F. Touron Jul 2009

An Adaptive Method For Calculating Blow-Up Solutions, Charles F. Touron

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Reactive-diffusive systems modeling physical phenomena in certain situations develop a singularity at a finite value of the independent variable referred to as "blow-up." The attempt to find the blow-up time analytically is most often impossible, thus requiring a numerical determination of the value. The numerical methods often use a priori knowledge of the blow-up solution such as monotonicity or self-similarity. For equations where such a priori knowledge is unavailable, ad hoc methods were constructed. The object of this research is to develop a simple and consistent approach to find numerically the blow-up solution without having a priori knowledge or resorting …
