Catalan And Hyper-Catalan Numbers: Combinatorial Applications To Polynomial Equations, Leilani Natale
Catalan And Hyper-Catalan Numbers: Combinatorial Applications To Polynomial Equations, Leilani Natale
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
In this paper, we study Catalan numbers and their generalization, hyper-Catalan numbers, and explore how these sequences arise naturally in the context of solving polynomial equations using infinite power series. We begin by introducing the Catalan numbers through their combinatorial interpretation as triangulations of convex polygons. Using this geometric definition, we derive a relation whose recursive structure leads to a quadratic functional equation. Interpreting this relation as a formal power series equation allows us to express solutions to quadratic equations as infinite power series whose coefficients are given by the Catalan numbers. This framework is then extended by allowing polygon …
The Modular Generalized Springer Correspondence For The Symplectic Group, Joseph Dorta
The Modular Generalized Springer Correspondence For The Symplectic Group, Joseph Dorta
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Modular Generalized Springer Correspondence (MGSC), as developed by Achar, Juteau, Henderson, and Riche, stands as a significant extension of the early groundwork laid by Lusztig's Springer Correspondence in characteristic zero which provided crucial insights into the representation theory of finite groups of Lie type. Building upon Lusztig's work, a generalized version of the Springer Correspondence was later formulated to encompass broader contexts.
In the realm of modular representation theory, Juteau's efforts gave rise to the Modular Springer Correspondence, offering a framework to explore the interplay between algebraic geometry and representation theory in positive characteristic. Achar, Juteau, Henderson, and Riche …
The Dual Boundary Complex Of The Moduli Space Of Cyclic Compactifications, Toby Anderson
The Dual Boundary Complex Of The Moduli Space Of Cyclic Compactifications, Toby Anderson
HMC Senior Theses
Moduli spaces provide a useful method for studying families of mathematical objects. We study certain moduli spaces of algebraic curves, which are generalizations of familiar lines and conics. This thesis focuses on, Δ(r,n), the dual boundary complex of the moduli space of genus-zero cyclic curves. This complex is itself a moduli space of graphs and can be investigated with combinatorial methods. Remarkably, the combinatorics of this complex provides insight into the geometry and topology of the original moduli space. In this thesis, we investigate two topologically invariant properties of Δ(r,n). We compute its Euler characteristic and …

Surjectivity Of The Wahl Map On Cubic Graphs, Angela C. Hanson
Surjectivity Of The Wahl Map On Cubic Graphs, Angela C. Hanson
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
Much of algebraic geometry is the study of curves. One tool we use to study curves is whether they can be embedded in a K3 surface or not. If the Wahl map is surjective on a curve, that curve cannot be embedded in a K3 surface. Therefore, studying if the Wahl map is surjective for a particular curve gives us more insight into the properties of that curve. We simplify this problem by converting graph curves to dual graphs. Then the information for graphs can be used to study the underlying curves. We will discuss conditions for the Wahl map …
Geometry Of Pipe Dream Complexes, Benjamin Reese
Geometry Of Pipe Dream Complexes, Benjamin Reese
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
In this dissertation we study the geometry of pipe dream complexes with the goal of gaining a deeper understanding of Schubert polynomials. Given a pipe dream complex PD(w) for w a permutation in the symmetric group, we show its boundary is Whitney stratified by the set of all pipe dream complexes PD(v) where v > w in the strong Bruhat order. For permutations w in the symmetric group on n elements, we introduce the pipe dream complex poset P(n). The dual of this graded poset naturally corresponds to the poset of strata associated to the Whitney stratification of the boundary of …
Unomaha Problem Of The Week (2021-2022 Edition), Brad Horner, Jordan M. Sahs
Unomaha Problem Of The Week (2021-2022 Edition), Brad Horner, Jordan M. Sahs
UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair
The University of Omaha math department's Problem of the Week was taken over in Fall 2019 from faculty by the authors. The structure: each semester (Fall and Spring), three problems are given per week for twelve weeks, with each problem worth ten points - mimicking the structure of arguably the most well-regarded university math competition around, the Putnam Competition, with prizes awarded to top-scorers at semester's end. The weekly competition was halted midway through Spring 2020 due to COVID-19, but relaunched again in Fall 2021, with massive changes.
Now there are three difficulty tiers to POW problems, roughly corresponding to …
A Tropical Approach To The Brill-Noether Theory Over Hurwitz Spaces, Kaelin Cook-Powell
A Tropical Approach To The Brill-Noether Theory Over Hurwitz Spaces, Kaelin Cook-Powell
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
The geometry of a curve can be analyzed in many ways. One way of doing this is to study the set of all divisors on a curve of prescribed rank and degree, known as a Brill-Noether variety. A sequence of results, starting in the 1980s, answered several fundamental questions about these varieties for general curves. However, many of these questions are still unanswered if we restrict to special families of curves. This dissertation has three main goals. First, we examine Brill-Noether varieties for these special families and provide combinatorial descriptions of their irreducible components. Second, we provide a natural generalization …
Analyzing Network Topology For Ddos Mitigation Using The Abelian Sandpile Model, Bhavana Panchumarthi, Monroe Ame Stephenson
Analyzing Network Topology For Ddos Mitigation Using The Abelian Sandpile Model, Bhavana Panchumarthi, Monroe Ame Stephenson
altREU Projects
A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) is a cyber attack, which is capable of triggering a cascading failure in the victim network. While DDoS attacks come in different forms, their general goal is to make a network's service unavailable to its users. A common, but risky, countermeasure is to blackhole or null route the source, or the attacked destination. When a server becomes a blackhole, or referred to as the sink in the paper, the data that is assigned to it "disappears" or gets deleted. Our research shows how mathematical modeling can propose an alternative blackholing strategy that could improve …
Algebraic And Geometric Properties Of Hierarchical Models, Aida Maraj
Algebraic And Geometric Properties Of Hierarchical Models, Aida Maraj
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
In this dissertation filtrations of ideals arising from hierarchical models in statistics related by a group action are are studied. These filtrations lead to ideals in polynomial rings in infinitely many variables, which require innovative tools. Regular languages and finite automata are used to prove and explicitly compute the rationality of some multivariate power series that record important quantitative information about the ideals. Some work regarding Markov bases for non-reducible models is shown, together with advances in the polyhedral geometry of binary hierarchical models.
Geometry Of Linear Subspace Arrangements With Connections To Matroid Theory, William Trok
Geometry Of Linear Subspace Arrangements With Connections To Matroid Theory, William Trok
Theses and Dissertations--Mathematics
This dissertation is devoted to the study of the geometric properties of subspace configurations, with an emphasis on configurations of points. One distinguishing feature is the widespread use of techniques from Matroid Theory and Combinatorial Optimization. In part we generalize a theorem of Edmond's about partitions of matroids in independent subsets. We then apply this to establish a conjectured bound on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a set of fat points.
We then study how the dimension of an ideal of point changes when intersected with a generic fat subspace. In particular we introduce the concept of a ``very unexpected hypersurface'' …
Phylogenetic Networks And Functions That Relate Them, Drew Scalzo
Phylogenetic Networks And Functions That Relate Them, Drew Scalzo
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Phylogenetic Networks are defined to be simple connected graphs with exactly n labeled nodes of degree one, called leaves, and where all other unlabeled nodes have a degree of at least three. These structures assist us with analyzing ancestral history, and its close relative - phylogenetic trees - garner the same visualization, but without the graph being forced to be connected. In this paper, we examine the various characteristics of Phylogenetic Networks and functions that take these networks as inputs, and convert them to more complex or simpler structures. Furthermore, we look at the nature of functions as they relate …
Model Selection And Experimental Design Of Biological Networks With Algebraic Geometry, Anyu Zhang
Model Selection And Experimental Design Of Biological Networks With Algebraic Geometry, Anyu Zhang
Mathematics Theses and Dissertations
Model selection based on experimental data is an essential challenge in biological data science. In decades, the volume of biological data from varied sources, including laboratory experiments, field observations, and patient health records has seen an unprecedented increase. Mainly when collecting data is expensive or time-consuming, as it is often in the case with clinical trials and biomolecular experiments, the problem of selecting information-rich data becomes crucial for creating relevant models.
Motivated by certain geometric relationships between data, we partitioned input data sets, especially data sets that correspond to a unique basis, into equivalence classes with the same basis to …

Squared Distance Matrix Of A Weighted Tree, Ravindra B. Bapat
Journal Articles
Let T be a tree with vertex set f1;: :: ; ng such that each edge is assigned a nonzero weight. The squared distance matrix of T; denoted by is the n n matrix with (i; j)-element d(i; j)2; where d(i; j) is the sum of the weights of the edges on the (ij)-path. We obtain a formula for the determinant of A formula for 1 is also obtained, under certain conditions. The results generalize known formulas for the unweighted case.
Taking A Canon To The Adjunction Formula, Paul M. Harrelson
Taking A Canon To The Adjunction Formula, Paul M. Harrelson
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
In this paper, we show how the canonical divisor of a graph is related to the canonical divisor of its subgraph. The use of chip firing and the adjunction formula for graphs ex- plains said relation and even completes it. We go on to show the difference between the formula for full subgraphs and that of non-full subgraphs. Examples are used to simplify these results and to see the adjunction formula in action. Finally, we show that though the adjunction formula seems simple at first glance, it is somewhat complex and rather useful.

The Average Measure Of A K-Dimensional Simplex In An N-Cube, John A. Carter
The Average Measure Of A K-Dimensional Simplex In An N-Cube, John A. Carter
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
Within an n-dimensional unit cube, a number of k-dimensional simplices can be formed whose vertices are the vertices of the n-cube. In this thesis, we analyze the average measure of a k-simplex in the n-cube. We develop exact equations for the average measure when k = 1, 2, and 3. Then we generate data for these cases and conjecture that their averages appear to approach nk/2 times some constant. Using the convergence of Bernstein polynomials and a k-simplex Bernstein generalization, we prove the conjecture is true for the 1-simplex and 2-simplex cases. We then develop a generalized formula for …
An Incidence Approach To The Distinct Distances Problem, Bryce Mclaughlin
An Incidence Approach To The Distinct Distances Problem, Bryce Mclaughlin
HMC Senior Theses
In 1946, Erdös posed the distinct distances problem, which asks for the minimum number of distinct distances that any set of n points in the real plane must realize. Erdös showed that any point set must realize at least &Omega(n1/2) distances, but could only provide a construction which offered &Omega(n/&radic(log(n)))$ distances. He conjectured that the actual minimum number of distances was &Omega(n1-&epsilon) for any &epsilon > 0, but that sublinear constructions were possible. This lower bound has been improved over the years, but Erdös' conjecture seemed to hold until in 2010 Larry Guth and Nets Hawk Katz …

In this book authors for the first time introduce the notion of subset vertex graph using the vertex set as the subset of the power set P(S), S is assumed in this book to be finite; however it can be finite or infinite. We have defined two types of subset vertex graphs, one is directed and the other one is not directed. The most important fact which must be kept in record is that for a given set of vertices there exists one and only one subset vertex graph be it of type I or type II. Several important and …

A bipolar single-valued neutrosophic (BSVN) graph structure is a generalization of a bipolar fuzzy graph. In this research paper, we present certain concepts of BSVN graph structures. We describe some operations on BSVN graph structures and elaborate on these with examples. Moreover, we investigate some related properties of these operations.

Classification Of Book Representations Of K6, Dana Rowland

A book representation of a graph is a particular way of embedding a graph in three dimensional space so that the vertices lie on a circle and the edges are chords on disjoint topological disks. We describe a set of operations on book representations that preserves ambient isotopy, and apply these operations to K6, the complete graph with six vertices. We prove there are exactly 59 distinct book representations for K6, and we identify the number and type of knotted and linked cycles in each representation. We show that book representations of K6 contain between one and seven links, and …
Random Tropical Curves, Magda L. Hlavacek
Random Tropical Curves, Magda L. Hlavacek
HMC Senior Theses
In the setting of tropical mathematics, geometric objects are rich with inherent combinatorial structure. For example, each polynomial $p(x,y)$ in the tropical setting corresponds to a tropical curve; these tropical curves correspond to unbounded graphs embedded in $\R^2$. Each of these graphs is dual to a particular subdivision of its Newton polytope; we classify tropical curves by combinatorial type based on these corresponding subdivisions. In this thesis, we aim to gain an understanding of the likeliness of the combinatorial type of a randomly chosen tropical curve by using methods from polytope geometry. We focus on tropical curves corresponding to quadratics, …

Adinkras And Arithmetical Graphs, Madeleine Weinstein
Adinkras And Arithmetical Graphs, Madeleine Weinstein
HMC Senior Theses
Adinkras and arithmetical graphs have divergent origins. In the spirit of Feynman diagrams, adinkras encode representations of supersymmetry algebras as graphs with additional structures. Arithmetical graphs, on the other hand, arise in algebraic geometry, and give an arithmetical structure to a graph. In this thesis, we will interpret adinkras as arithmetical graphs and see what can be learned.
Our work consists of three main strands. First, we investigate arithmetical structures on the underlying graph of an adinkra in the specific case where the underlying graph is a hypercube. We classify all such arithmetical structures and compute some of the corresponding …

In this book authors for the first time introduce a special type of fixed points using MOD square matrix operators. These special type of fixed points are different from the usual classical fixed points. A study of this is carried out in this book. Several interesting properties are developed in this regard. The notion of these fixed points find many applications in the mathematical models which are dealt systematically by the authors in the forth coming books. These special type of fixed points or special realized limit cycles are always guaranteed as we use only MOD matrices as operators with …
