A Computational Study Of Adsorptive Desulfurization In Metal Organic Frameworks, Kyle Concha

Theses

Fossil fuel usage has been related to several concerns about the environment and human health. One of these concerns is related to fuels containing Organic Sulfur Compounds (OSCs) which upon burning produce hazardous compounds such as SO2 which contributes to acid rain and affects respiratory health. Removal of these OSCs is an important field of study as it can prevent the production of SOx compounds. One technique to remove OSCs is Adsorptive Desulfurization (ADS) in which Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) are potential candidates to be used as adsorbents. Two archetypal MOFs, HKUST-1 and Cu3HHTP2, …

Journal of Electrochemistry

Rational design and synthesis of non-precious-metal catalyst plays an important role in improving the activity and stability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) but remains a major challenge. In this work, we used a facile approach to synthesize iron nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped porous carbon materials (Fe@N-C) from functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs, MET-6). Embedding Fe nanoparticles into the carbon skeleton increases the graphitization degree and the proportion of graphitic N as well as promotes the formation of mesopores in the catalyst. The Fe@N-C-30 catalyst showed the excellent ORR activity in alkaline solutions (E0 = 0.97 V vs. RHE, E1/2 …

Computational Study Of Foldamer-Based Water Channels, Shadi Houshyar Azar

Theses and Dissertations

One of the most serious global challenges of this century is water scarcity, stemming primarily from the growing demand for freshwater and the depletion of freshwater resources. Water desalination has the potential to address this problem, but current technologies are expensive and inadequate. Here, we present novel, computationally designed channels with high water permeability and selectivity against ions, inspired by natural water channels, aquaporins. Aquaporin's unique property of transporting water while rejecting protons and other ions has led to numerous studies on incorporating such channels into different membranes for water purification applications. However, use of an aquaporin-incorporated membrane is limited …

Photoisomerizable Membrane Active Peptides, Cristina Ventura May 2023

Photoisomerizable Membrane Active Peptides, Cristina Ventura

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Membrane active peptides (MAPs) bind and partition into the cell membrane thus causing permeabilization. Many α-helical membrane active peptides contain central proline residues that distinguish the hydrophobic and hydrophilic faces of the helix. The proline induces a bend that produces a helix-hinge-helix motif. Mutation of these proline residues has a significant effect on the activity of the MAP. Azobenzene is a photoisomerizable molecule that switches from its trans to cis isomer upon excitation with ultraviolet (UV) light and from its cis to trans isomer upon excitation with visible light (VL). In this work it is hypothesized that the hinge function …

Development Of New Chemical Probes To Delineate The Polyamine Regulation & Molecular Strategies To Unravel Protein Polyamination, Vennela Tulluri May 2023

Development Of New Chemical Probes To Delineate The Polyamine Regulation & Molecular Strategies To Unravel Protein Polyamination, Vennela Tulluri

Theses and Dissertations

Polyamines such as putrescine, spermidine, and spermine modulate critical cellular processes, including gene expression and cell proliferation. Cellular polyamine regulation is a complex mechanism controlled by three different proteins: Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), Antizyme (OAZ), and Antizyme Inhibitor (AZIN). While ODC is directly involved in polyamine biosynthesis, OAZ, and AZIN regulate the ODC activity via protein-protein interactions. The dysregulation of ODC, OAZ, and AZIN leads to elevated polyamines in numerous pathologies, making them attractive targets for controlling polyamine levels. Besides regulating polyamine synthesis, OAZ modulates polyamine transport. However, the precise mechanism remains elusive. In this research, we discuss our approach to …

Using In Situ Single-Particle Imaging To Understand The Role Of Structural Distortions During Anion Exchange In Cesium Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals, Dongyan Zhang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Colloidal cesium lead halide (CsPbX3, X = Cl, Br, I) perovskite nanocrystals are being investigated as promising materials for light-emitting devices and fluorescence probes due to their strong absorption and emission (1.55 eV – 3.05 eV) of visible light. Anion exchange is a facile, post-synthetic method to tune the bandgap emission of CsPbX3 nanocrystals, covering most of the spectrum of visible light. However, structural heterogeneities in nanocrystals formed during anion exchange will lead to lower photoluminescence quantum yield and a broader range of emission wavelengths. A single batch of nanocrystals will contain a distribution of sizes, shapes, surface structures, and …

Studies And Applications Of Two-Phase Ligand Exchanges On Cadmium Selenide Nanoplatelets, Chenguang Ji

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents two-phase ligand exchanges on CdSe NPLs, and the applications of two-phase ligand exchanges to achieve interchange between L-type, Z-type and bound-ion-pair X type ligation on wurtzite CdSe NPLs. Post-synthetic ligand exchange is an important emerging method for optimizing the physical, catalytic, and spectroscopic properties of semiconductor nanocrystals. However, ligand exchanges conducted with small, polar, or charged ligands produce nanocrystals that are not dispersible in nonpolar liquids. Two-phase ligand exchange with immiscible polar and nonpolar liquids allows transfer of the nanocrystals from the nonpolar to the polar phase upon ligand exchange, in which stable nanocrystal dispersions are formed. …
