Implementation Of A Probiotic Intervention Among Medical-Surgical Patients: An Evidence-Based Practice Quality Improvement Project, Moncia Bonvicini
Implementation Of A Probiotic Intervention Among Medical-Surgical Patients: An Evidence-Based Practice Quality Improvement Project, Moncia Bonvicini
DNP Projects
Introduction: Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is the most prevalent nosocomial infection pathogen responsible for antibiotic associated diarrhea. CDI is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality rates of medical patients and has increased due to frequent broad spectrum antibiotic usage. CDI is associated with a mortality rate of 25% amongst medical patients. At this catholic hospital in the Northeast of the United States, there is currently no official intervention implemented to prescribe a probiotic when patients are started on antibiotics. Evidence supports that probiotics agents have demonstrated modest success in the risk reduction of CDI to patients receiving antibiotic therapy. …

Yet little is known about parents' online digital technology use and digital health literacy skill. This study aimed to investigate parents' digital technology use, their self-reported digital health literacy skill, and demographic information as potential factors influencing their use of digital technologies. METHODS: An online survey utilizing convenience sampling was administered to new parents during the COVID-19 pandemic that inquired about their demographic information, digital technology use, and digital …
Nurse Educators' Experiences Of Student Remediation, Holly A Dever
Nurse Educators' Experiences Of Student Remediation, Holly A Dever
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Little is known about the nurse educator's experiences in remediating novice undergraduate nursing students who failed an exam early in the program of study. While numerous strategies have been used by faculty for remediation, no evidence-based methodology for student remediation has been identified in published literature. The aim of this study was to build a foundation of qualitative research on nurse educators' experiences in the remediation of a student who failed an exam. This basic qualitative study, guided by Smith and Liehr's story theory, explored the nurse educator's experiences with remediation using interview data collected from six nurse educators. Interviews …
Education Program To Increase Nurses' Knowledge Of Faith Community Nursing, Lovell Thurmon Sweeten Cartwright
Education Program To Increase Nurses' Knowledge Of Faith Community Nursing, Lovell Thurmon Sweeten Cartwright
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe practice problem was a group of nurses practicing as faith community nurses (FCNs) who had no training in FCN practice, a specialty recognized by the American Nurses Association. This problem was important to address within the context of nursing practice because the nurses could have acted outside of their scope of practice and caused harm. The practice-focused question addressed whether a staff education program for FCNs would increase their knowledge of their role in a church setting with the goal of developing independent FCNs. The model guiding the project was the health promotion model. Eleven registered nurses were recruited …
Lived Experiences Of Copd Patients With Exertional Hypoxemia Prescribed Supplemental Oxygen, Sarah Ann Evans
Lived Experiences Of Copd Patients With Exertional Hypoxemia Prescribed Supplemental Oxygen, Sarah Ann Evans
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Patients with exertional hypoxemia are often prescribed supplemental oxygen therapy to alleviate their symptoms and maintain adequate arterial oxygen saturation; however, little is known about how chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients with exertional hypoxemia experience the addition of supplemental oxygen on their lives. The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study guided by Roger’s science of unitary human beings was to explore the lived experiences of COPD patients with exertional hypoxemia and who require supplemental oxygen. Purposive sampling was used to recruit participants using a query from the electronic medical records to identify patients prescribed supplemental oxygen for exertional, not …

Managing Nurse Leader Stress To Promote Leader Retention, Rebecca Sue Hawkins
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nurse leaders are a health care group that has been provided limited support to managestress and burnout symptoms, yet the impact of leader stress burden on staff satisfaction, patient outcomes, and their own health is vital to the provision of safe, high-quality health care. The problem of leader fatigue and burnout is the ability to retain current leaders and recruit the next generation. The purpose of this staff education project was to address leadership burnout due to stress and the lack of knowledge of how to manage stress in the moment. A combination of Watson’s theory of caring and Ray’s …

Differences Between Nurse-Led Intervention Topics, Longevity, Changed Practices, And Sustainability Planning, Robin Anselm
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Though health care providers use evidence-based interventions (EBIs), a knowledge gap exists regarding lasting change associated with doctorate-prepared nurse interventions and sustainability planning. This quantitative cross-sectional descriptive design guided by the five pillars of the United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs) was used to examine the differences between doctorate-prepared nurses’ sustainable EBI topics, intervention longevity, changed clinical practices, and sustainability planning. The dynamic sustainability framework, the adult learning theory, and the social learning theory framed this study. The design included a survey of 1,365 nurse anesthesiologists using a questionnaire composed of the Program Sustainability Assessment Tool (PSAT) version 2 and …
Nurses’ Perception Of Pain Assessment In Cognitively Impaired Older Residents In Long-Term Care, Abigail Owolabi
Nurses’ Perception Of Pain Assessment In Cognitively Impaired Older Residents In Long-Term Care, Abigail Owolabi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractPain has been a significant problem in old age and is more problematic in cognitively impaired older residents (CIOR) because of their inability to express themselves. The goal of pain assessment in CIOR is to treat pain before it escalates to behavioral problems. This descriptive qualitative study aimed to explore nurses’ perceptions of pain assessment in CIOR in long-term care facilities. Watson’s theory of human caring was used to frame the study. A purposive sample of eight nurses was recruited from two long-term care facilities for interviews conducted using the telephone and continued until saturation was reached. Data was manually …
Transitional Care For The End Stage Renal Disease Patient, Elaine Vitto
Transitional Care For The End Stage Renal Disease Patient, Elaine Vitto
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe prevalence rates for end stage renal disease (ESRD) have continued to rise by approximately 20,000 cases per year, and the number of patients with kidney failure requiring dialysis in the United States had reached 554,038 at the end of 2018. Transition of care for patients between acute care facilities and other care facilities such as dialysis centers remains challenging for providers. Lack of clear communication between providers, poor patient understanding of post-hospital self-care, and gaps in healthcare scheduling contribute to a high rate of adverse events. This facility did not have a detailed clinical guideline for ESRD communication between …

Development Of A Standardized Novice Neonatal Nurse Orientation Program, Joanne Rau Pasinski
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract Neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) are fast-paced units requiring skilled nurses to care for a unique patient population. Orientation of new nurses to the NICU can be challenging for both the orientee and the preceptor. Offering an evidence-based practice orientation program by an accredited organization that is specific to NICU can be a valuable tool for both the preceptor and the orientee as well as enhance nurse, patient, and organizational outcomes. The project question explored if use of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) 15-module nursing orientation program for RNs in a NICU increased their …

Cardiomems Staff Education To Improve Use Of Pulmonary Artery Sensor Data In An Emergency Department, Betty Sue Reynolds
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Assessing volume status in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) remains a difficult task. Newer technology, such as CardioMEMS, allows providers to download pulmonary artery pressure measurements from an implanted sensor. In a large rural emergency department (ED), lack of staff education on CardioMEMS made the device useless when a patient presented to the ED. The purpose of this project was to develop a staff education in-service to address the gap in practice. The theory used to guide development of an effective curricular program and instruction method was Knowles’ theory of andragogy. Application of the analysis, design, development, implementation, and …

Improving Spiritual Care Competency Among Intensive Care Unit Nurses: Promoting Holistic Patient Care Towards End-Of-Life, Joanne Nguyen, Dana Bagis
Nursing | Student Research Posters
Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses play a crucial role in providing physiological stabilizing care in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, often marked by constant changes and variability in complex patients. Despite their specialization, the aspect of spiritual care tends to be overlooked, particularly in the context of end-of-life care. This is significant because previous studies have shown that a lack of spiritual care leads to poorer health outcomes, decreased coping, increased depression, and diminished quality of life for patients. This research proposal aims to investigate the spiritual care competency among ICU nurses who partake in spiritual care based training, with …

Medically Accurate Evidence-Based Sex Education And Abstinence-Only Sex Education: Impact On Teen Pregnancies In The United States, Nicole Chiu
Nursing | Senior Theses
The U.S. has funded abstinence-only programs to combat pregnancy rates for a long time. With numerous factors contributing to teen pregnancies, there have been a lot of ways that people have decided to try to decrease the number of teen pregnancies. For example, schools have either decided that they intend to fully educate their teenage students using medically accurate evidence-based sex education or come from a more conservative approach and give abstinence-only education. The objective of this investigation is to identify whether evidence-based sex education or abstinence-only sex education is more effective at combating teen pregnancy and abortion rates. This …

Using Family Focused-Care Solutions To Improve Child’S Quality Of Life, Joshua M. Del Sol
Nursing | Senior Theses
Chronic illness in children impacts not only themselves but their families too. Everyone in the family supports each other and provides each other with pretty much all our physiological needs including our emotional needs. Parents/caregivers are the role models for their young children and really shape the person they become because basic values and their early relationships are formed. A family provides that consistent balance in our life that is the center of our life at a young age. When children are diagnosed with a chronic illness, parents may feel responsible, ashamed, guilty, or angry. Families may turn on each …
The Effects Of Prolonged Exposure Therapy On The Symptoms Of Patients With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Hannah Belle Pontillas
The Effects Of Prolonged Exposure Therapy On The Symptoms Of Patients With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Hannah Belle Pontillas
Nursing | Senior Theses
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DSM-5 defines posttraumatic stress disorder or PTSD as persistent psychophysiological reactions including intrusive memories of trauma, negative feelings towards such memories, and avoidance of related stimuli—all of which are a direct result of experiencing a traumatic event. The first line of treatment for this particular mental disorder is considered to be prolonged exposure therapy or PE therapy due to its high success rate in treating the symptoms of moderate to severe PTSD as it encourages patients to directly confront and overcome their trauma. However, PE therapy has garnered concern as it …
Maternal Postnatal Depressive Symptoms And Its Effects On Infant Bonding, Tammy Nguyen
Maternal Postnatal Depressive Symptoms And Its Effects On Infant Bonding, Tammy Nguyen
Nursing | Senior Theses
The objective of this thesis is to gain insight on precipitating factors that increase postpartum mother’s depressive symptoms, including stress and anxiety, and how attachment is influenced. Maternal-infant bonding is defined as the emotional relationship and interaction between mother and infant. Postnatal depressive symptoms typically are under-diagnosed due to a lack of education and the stigma of believing that the effects are “normal” consequences of motherhood. Those affected may not seek professional help. Unrealistic expectations about bonding with their infants can have a negative mental health impact on mothers and influence infants’ behaviors. High expectations of needing to be a …
Kangaroo Care Education For Low Socioeconomic Status Families In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit., Joara Peterson
Kangaroo Care Education For Low Socioeconomic Status Families In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit., Joara Peterson
Nursing | Senior Theses
The early contact between mother and baby is known as skin-to-skin, also referred to as “kangaroo care” (KC). It involves placing the baby on the mother’s chest as soon as it is appropriate (Thompson et al., 1979). This interaction was primarily for bonding but many researchers have discovered additional benefits. There is significant correlation between kangaroo care and weight gain (especially for low birth weight infants), as well as body temperature and heart rate regulation, which reduces the risk of medical complications. It also decreases levels of stress in mothers and babies by lowering the release of cortisol hormone (Mohammadi …
