Lost In Interpretation: The Lived Experience Of Nurse Interpreters In The Clinical Setting, Byron Batz
Lost In Interpretation: The Lived Experience Of Nurse Interpreters In The Clinical Setting, Byron Batz
Dissertations
The use of language interpreters in the health care setting constitutes a vital part of provider-patient communication but remains a relatively unexplored phenomenon. Registered nurses (RNs) are often called upon to serve as interpreters when linguistically diverse patients constitute a large segment of the patient population. That RNs serve simultaneously in an interpreter role – in addition to clinical and advocacy roles – is a complex facet of contemporary nursing practice in a diverse U.S. culture. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to examine the lived experience of RNs serving as interpreters in health care institutions in Southern …
Unit-Based Onboarding Program For New Graduates On A Medical-Surgical Unit, Racquel A. Brewster
Unit-Based Onboarding Program For New Graduates On A Medical-Surgical Unit, Racquel A. Brewster
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nurse turnover is prevalent among new graduate nurses. Many new graduate nurses feel unsupported by their peers, lack self-confidence, or feel overburdened due to the workload assigned to them. New graduate nurses with support systems are more likely to stay with an organization. Research suggests the creation of a supportive environment for new graduate nurses to help increase nurse retention in this demographic. A unit-based transition onboarding program was launched to create a supportive environment to help retain new graduate nurses on a medical-surgical unit. New graduate nurses with at least 1 to 3 years of experience completed a Likert-type …

Communication Assessment Tools For Emergency Department Nurses Who Interact With Individuals With Intellectual And Developmental Disabilities, Holly Hunt
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Abstract/Executive Summary
Problem Statement: Communication is an essential part of every nurse-patient interaction. During the best of times the patient and nurse can clearly understand each other and engage in successful interaction with positive patient outcomes. Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) often use nontraditional ways of communicating that can complicate the ideal nurse-patient interaction. When a patient presents with a different method of communicating, the nurse must possess tools available to facilitate a successful interaction. Identifying such a tool or if one cannot be found building a sample tool is vital for positive patient outcomes for individuals with …

Improving Handoff Communication In The Emergency Department, Amy Shepherd
Improving Handoff Communication In The Emergency Department, Amy Shepherd
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Ineffective handoff communication has been recognized for years as a practice issue and is the most frequently reported cause of sentinel events in U.S. hospitals (Dufault et al., 2010) and responsible, at least in part, for 30% of all malpractice claims (Fucik, 2019). The development of standardized tools has been identified as a key component to improving handover practice. For this project, a standardized SBAR tool was modified for a local emergency department. The intervention was a process change in the emergency department to utilize an SBAR tool during handoff reports. The project was implemented by educating staff on the …

West Chester University Doctoral Projects
Abstract
Patients diagnosed with an advanced disease or serious illness often experience a variety of distressing symptoms that can negatively impact their functional status and quality of life. Outpatient palliative care is a medical specialty that often requires a referral from a primary care or specialty care provider who has identified a need for specialized pain and symptom management, psychosocial or caregiver distress, end-of-life care management, or goals of care discussions. Despite notable effectiveness in the provision of palliative care for patients with advanced disease and serious illness, barriers exist that prevent patients from accepting palliative care referrals even after …

Use Of A Nurse-Led Daily Goals Checklist To Improve Multidisciplinary Rounds In The Icu, Marissa Riley
DNP Projects
Research has shown a multidisciplinary rounding approach can improve patient care outcomes in the intensive care unit (ICU). Due to the complexity and wide range of the healthcare team, many patient details and treatment goals may be overlooked during daily patient rounds without a daily goals checklist to help ensure collaboration and communication of the multidisciplinary team. A nurse led daily goals checklist could be useful for framing nurse-provider conversations to promote comprehensive communication and collaboration. The purpose of this project was to improve adherence to a nurse-led daily goals checklist to improve communication and collaboration between the nurses and …

Robotic Team High Reliability Organization’S Communication Evaluation Tool, Joanne F. Mercurio
Robotic Team High Reliability Organization’S Communication Evaluation Tool, Joanne F. Mercurio
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
Multidisciplinary team communication in robotic surgery presents several safety considerations for the intraoperative surgical patient. It is an important consideration since the surgeon and the operating room team are geographically distanced with the surgeon at the console, and the other team members situated at the patient bedside. Scrubbed team members are performing such functions as positioning the robotic arms as well as exchanging instruments, while the remaining interprofessional team members are coordinating multiple patient care activities. It therefore becomes imperative that the recognition of the potential for miscommunication is of paramount importance, and strategies need to be generated that will …

Improving Nursing Shift Handoff Reports: A Quality Improvement Project, Nathan Mm Secrest
Master's Projects and Capstones
Nursing shift-to-shift handoff report can greatly impact a patient’s quality of care. According to the Joint Commission, “an estimated 80 percent of serious medical errors involve miscommunication between caregivers when patients are transferred or handed-off” (Inadequate handoff communication, 2017). In total, this quality improvement (QI) project worked with three hospital inpatient units on three different floors in an urban California (CA) city. Each unit and even shifts within each unit varied, leading to the conclusion that interventions should be trialed by units with the most buy-in, then adjusted to the unique needs of each unit.
